Reports are the gunman has shot himself on the 6th floor.

Report of 2nd gunman may be because of conflicting descriptions of the shooter. Reports of that shooter firing shots outside the building before entering the PCL.

A gunman who fired several shots in the Perry-Castaneda Library on the UT campus is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and police are looking for a possible second suspect, officials say.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo confirmed that the shooter is dead, but UT continues to be locked down, and people are urged to stay out of the area.

Officials say it appears there are no other injuries. UT spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said witnesses had reported that the man was armed with automatic weapon.

“The shooter is dead on the sixth floor of Perry-Castaneda Library, said Don Hale, a UT spokesman. “No identification. Apparently took his own life.”

“We don’t have any report of anybody getting shot at this point,” Hale said.

“It’s not clear yet” if there is a second suspect, Hale said shortly after 9 a.m., adding that the university’s advice to stay indoors and keep doors locked remains in force.

Police officials raised the possibility of a second gunman because they had received different descriptions of the gunman by witnesses.

It was unclear how many shots were fired, but witnesses described eight to 10 shots in short bursts.

There were numerous reports that the gunman was wearing a black ski mask.

KVUE talked to UT student Andrew McWaters who said he saw the shooter near Dobie Mall and heard four gunshots followed by two more. He said the gunman was wearing a black ski mask, smiling and waving the gun.

Did they just pass a law which made it ok to carry concealed weapons on the university campus?

The UT Law School has the unfortunate coincidence of hosting a lecture by John Lott, author of More Guns, Less Crime.

I remember the discussion after the VaTech guy.  It never occurred to me that the problem with guns on college campuses was that there wasn't enough.

You're not conservative enough.  If everyone was carrying a gun, you'd hardly ever see more than three or four people shot at a time.  Problem solved.

Not trying to be a smartass with this question, but how do you tell if someone is smiling if he's wearing a ski-mask?

It's a sporting weapon.  Or so I've been told.

KXAN's live stream is showing still pictures from campus. One pretty chilling one is from a classroom in Mezes as four armed and armored SWAT officers walk into the room. Not what you expect to see when you go to class.

I just spoke to an officer that said he was there this morning.  He was told that they'd found a car with explosive-making materials in it that wasn't registered to the gunman.  That's why they initially thought there might be someone else involved.  I haven't seen anything in the news about the car, though so he might have just been given bad information early on and never heard different.
