It will be interesting to see how the Horns do against a legit running team.  I like our chances.

If they do, watch out for your quaterbacks.

Many years ago I was doing on-site work for a customer in the Boston area.  Drove through McDonalds (of course) for lunch and asked for a receipt for my expenses.  For whatever reason, they couldn't print one out, so the large, old (though she looked like a smoker, so she might have been 30 for all I know) lady working the window wrote out my order on a napkin and handed it to me.  At first, I was pretty sure our finance department wouldn't accept it, but then I saw she wrote it as one would expect an illiterate from New England: "Quater Pounda". No one questioned it.

Wow, what an experience that will be!  Seeing your team live at ND is a bucket list item

Line is ND by 4, and I picked Stanford to beat the line.

Its ND +4.5, not -4.5

Maybe that's what you meant: either way, I'm excited (hopefully my 8 month pregnant wife makes it)

Ah, yeah, sorry.  That's what I meant.  How'd you get tickets?  They're still 100% sold out all as season tickets, no?

New England: "Quater Pounda". No one questioned it.

About a month ago, we had Salvation Army come pick up a bunch of our old Houston furniture that we can't use in our apt here in NYC.

On the donation receipt:

  • 3 bags of clothing
  • 1 chair
  • 1 bookcase
  • 1 Chester Draws

It's not just New Englanders.  I was in college before I learned that there was no such thing as a "porkin bean".

Definitely a great experience, even when your team gets pounded.  Went to South Bend when I was a Midshipman and saw Navy get crushed 41-0.  Bad news...Notre Dame was ranked #1 going into that game.   Good news...no push ups for me!

It's been sweet to see the Mids get a couple wins over the domers in recent years.

Somehow I was invited to both the Texans/Cowboys game this week and UT/OU next week in Dallas.

We left at the half, got our glove and walked over to the park with a radio.   By the end of the third, we weren't even listening to the game anymore.

D looks fantastic today

Think about how good Jeffcoat will be in a year or two when he figures out what he's doing out there.

Right.   And since we can safely assume that it's not that we're only recruiting superstars on defense and not offense, that pretty much leaves us with one thing:  our offensive coaching is for shit.  Complete and total shit.

Lose to OU by 50 next week.   Drop to 20th?

Lose to NU without scoring on offense two weeks after that.   Unranked?

If UCLA scores again, I'll have no choice but to do the unthinkable and banish the UT game to a muted side TV.

How do you return 50 yards and not block in the back?  Not possible.

I take it back.

4th and 5 and we throw for 4 yards underneath the coverage.

If it's Gilbert, he needs another season with the headphones.   If it's Davis (ooh!  ooh!), I still don't see how he has a job in football.

davis clearly wears the pants in his relationship with mack.  i don't think mack has the guts to stand up to him, i really don't.  i think it's a 'you do your thing and i'll do my thing' kind of partnership.

Ok, someone explain this one to me.

You score 6 on a TD.   PAT makes it an even 14 point game.   You're two TDs back.

So you inexplicably go for 2, which would have made it a 2 TD game also, but now that you missed, it's a three possession game.

Wow.

I don't think this UT team is as bad as it looked today.  The turnovers made it a lot worse.  The defense is still top 5 in the nation, and even with the less than mediocre offense that is still worth 10 wins.

What worries me is that the team looked totally unprepared today.  Penalties, shitty game plan, Mack/Champ yelling at the refs all day.  Just tough to watch.....

Next week could suck

People can blame Greg Davis all they want (not you specifically RR, just anyone), but Garrett Gilbert, after the first drive until the TD drive, was doing nothing but hopping around in the pocket panicking and throwing to his checkdowns all afternoon. The running game (except for Monroe, which I just don't fucking get at all. The guy gashes for 30 yards in 3 plays, then you don't go back to him again. WHAT?!) is fucking embarrassing, and that's on Greg as much as anyone else. But Garrett Gilbert was fucking horrible today except for about 4 minutes.

I was watching from the upper deck today and you could see that they weren't running clearout routes or stacking receivers with some gap until the third quarter. Everything was to the outside until they had to start going to the middle, like they didn't want to show that before next week but had to.

They held receivers back to block or limited them to hot routes because UCLA's blitzes were working. When they finally started using the TEs they dropped the ball. A lot of the reason Gilbert was throwing short is that his few receivers were covered most of the day. When he got one open it was almost an even mix of drops, poor passes and completions. The fourth down completion to Chiles that was short is all Chiles running a poor route.

That was a tough game to watch and a horrible, horrible day by the receivers and by Gilbert.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

The receivers are TERRIBLE.  That is not an exagerration...flat out awful.  Bad routes, embarrassing drops, no yards after catch, etc.  Yeah we miss Colt, but holy hell we miss Shipley.  I'm not going to rag on Greg Davis because at this point it is just wasted energy, but if we don't have a running game there is no point to force it.  We have had success in the past being pass-heavy and this isn't the NFL, so I don't see the need to force a running game.  And when we are down 26-7 in the second half, I think it's a good idea to throw the ball farther than 3 yards.  I don't understand this diaper we are putting on Gilbert.  I thought this kid was the high school player of the year?  It's not like Colt was slinging it his freshman year, but there was much more down field passing then than there is now.  Maybe it's the lack of confidence in the receivers....I don't konw.

This team could lose 5 games this year, but at the same time Mack always finds a way to right the ship.  It's just hard to see that happening at this point.

I just gotta say that any real Texan fan should be scared to death of today's game.  One solid win they'd been preparing 4 years for, and one fluke win on the road does not teach a habitual dick-stepper the coordination and discipline to suddenly stop stepping on one's own dick.  Add in all the minor injuries and athlete  overtraining and I hate to say it, but 34-24 cowfucks

The only guarantee for today's game is that no matter who wins HH will find one mistake Kubiak made and use that as justification that David Carr should be coaching this team.

Not scared at all.  Looking forward to it.  It's not as if they're playing a playoff contender today.

This was the most pathetic Texan performance since Season 1. They were beaten in every phase of the game. They were out offensed, out defensed, out special teamed, out muscled, out hustled, out smarted, out hearted, and out coached. There wasn't a single thing the Texans did as well as the Cowboys. Their water boy was even better.

People can blame Greg Davis all they want (not you specifically RR, just anyone), but Garrett Gilbert, after the first drive until the TD drive, was doing nothing but hopping around in the pocket panicking and throwing to his checkdowns all afternoon

And the QB coach is...?

just glad for no injuries, because there was no way houston was winning this game.  i know the defense seemingly held its own for much of the game, but this was the game where cushing was most missed.  texans made zero plays on d, and were lucky that the cowboys offense fucks itself so many times or else it probably would have gotten out of hand even earlier.

The defense played exactly the same as they did the first two games. The other team ran circles around them, and Kareem Jackson looked like an infant among men. The difference between this game and the first two was that offense, Schaub in particular, was terrible.

And this game was certainly winnable. Don't step on their dicks, and they win the game.

I must have made this comment three or four times in the three quarters I watched. Sometimes it looked like he didn't even go through progressions; he just immediately dumped it off after the snap. The only thing tempering my long-term concern is that Colt did the exact same thing through the first few weeks of 2006. Of course, you expect more from a 5-star recruit than a 3-star recruit.

I was glad to see the Cowboys play well yesterday. That helped salvage a pretty rough football weekend for me. It's strange, this morning, to think that I'm feeling three or four times better about a 1-2 team than I am about a 3-1 team. Dallas seems like a much better bet to be above .500 in three weeks than Texas does.

According to the quotes from Davis in previous games, checking down is exactly what GD wants him to do.

The Longhorn offense has been most lethal when the QBs are improvising.  That says a lot about Davis' schemes.

All in all I think my favorite is when a zone blocking team runs a bunch formation in the red zone. A close second is handing the ball off to Steve Slaton when he comes in to spell Foster. Say! They could combine the two and use Slaton out of a bunch formation on the two yard line. I think I would be completely satisfied then.

texans do a terrible job tipping their hand when slaton comes in the game-- you know he's getting the ball when he's in there.  and considering that he sucks as a runner on top of that, and that his one strength, as a receiver out of the backfield, is also a strength of foster, yeah i'm not sure why they do those handoffs either.

This drives me nuts more than anything.  Zipp jumped my shit a few weeks ago ostensibly for not giving Kubiak credit for improving in his head coaching over the last 5 years.  And then we get dumbshit play calling like what we saw at the goal line yesterday.  Whether he actually calls the plays or the play calling buck stops with him, it's like Groundhog Day with him...every game it's like it's his first and he's shocked when something that has consistently not worked, not even a little, for 5 years still doesn't.

Slaton doesn't suck as a runner, the problem is just what you describe...everyone in the stadium knows what they're going to do when he's in the game.  It's impossible to run successfully when the other team knows the play.  Slaton doesn't stand a chance.

I'm more concerned about when they're gonna do something to help poor Kareem Jackson.  I know he's a kid...I know he's on a learning curve...but, he's getting beaten to a bloody pulp by every single receiver that lines up against him.  They have got to try to help him.

I don't know if it is true or not, but last year I think Kub siad he does not like to blitz becasue it opens the middle of the field up.  The middle of the field could not be more wide open right now, even with three linebackers dropping back.

They have got to try to help him.

kind-of nitpicking, but just comparing slaton and foster's runs with the same line against the same defenses it's pretty obvious that slaton is pretty terrible and it's not just kubiak tipping his hand.  even when bottled up, foster is able to bust forward for 2-3 yards, and he's able to turn six yard gains into twelve yard gains, whereas slaton seems unable to do much after his initial burst.  i don't know if slaton's vision is hampered by his neck injury, or if he's just running tentative because of that or the fumbles, but he strikes me right now as a back who will only bring what his o-line gives him.

i think you'll start seeing some changes to the secondary against oakland, but in general the defense will improve mightily when cushing comes back.  it's just a domino effect with him in the game, with the qb not knowing if he's going to blitz or cover, and the d-coordinator less inclined to run misdirection or delays because cushing will blow them the fuck up.

I don't want to take the Oakland game lightly, but I wouldn't mind resting AJ for two straight weeks so he can get to full strength.

I'd also like to see more Troy Nolan and less Eugene Wilson

If AJ is cleared to play, rest assured that he will.

Agree on the second remark.

According to the quotes from Davis in previous games, checking down is exactly what GD wants him to do.

The Longhorn offense has been most lethal when the QBs are improvising.  That says a lot about Davis' schemes.

Come on, MM. You know as well as I do that the Texas coaching staff will never EVER call out a player in public. Of course they're going to say he's doing what they want him to do.  You can't hurt that 5 star superstar QB's fragile ego.

I've already decided that I'm not going to worry about the defensive backfield until Cushing comes back and they're still getting torched. Until then I'm just going to watch Gradkowski throw for seven hundred yards next weekend.

trick plays man, trick plays.  i'd have one long snapper line up over the ball like normal, and the other line up where the punter or field goal kicker would ordinarily be.  so the first long snapper snaps it to the second guy, but just as the defense is rushing in i have the second guy turn around, bend over, and snap the ball BACK to the first guy, who will then turn around and run for a whole bunch of yards.

I have a hard time believing a player that threw for over 12,000 yards in high school and won two state championships did so without having any understanding of how to read defenses.    Especially when his father played quarterback in the NFL.

Isn't that fucking amazing?   King for life.

Clearly we're recruiting 5-star talent at every position.   I find it incredible that the defensive players for the most part do their jobs and end in the top 10 pretty much every year and the offensive players get apologized for and swept under the rug.   I'm sure GG could easily be taught all the things he needs to be a top 5 QB.   I'm also just as sure he won't learn those things at Texas.

That would be perfectly sound advice if the one game in question were Oklahoma in Dallas or Nebraska in Lincoln, not so much for an unranked, very mediocre team in Austin.

Maybe, but learning a skill and applying it when it counts are two very different things.  I haven't watched any of his HS film, but I'd guess a talented kid like him could just go out and shred the opposition, regardless of what the defense is running.
In college, GG now has to figure out what the opposing defense is doing, PLUS figure out what the hell Greg Davis is doing.  That's a tall order.  The two standout QBs to succeed at that (granted, they were both Heisman contenders), did so largely after their sophomore years, when they no doubt figured they could make something better happen if a play "breaks."
Don't think twice, it's alright.

Who's having an aneurysm?  I'm oddly calm about this entire thing.  I thought we were laughably overrated before the season started and never thought this was a BCS team.   I called the UCLA loss 3 weeks ago and couldn't be less angry about it.

We will, in fact, get murdered by OU on Saturday.   At least 28.   I expect it but will be pleasantly surprised if we do better than that.    Nebraska will beat us even worse.   OU this weekend,  Owe-You in two weeks.

Texas didn't overlook anything.   Texas is vastly overrated and poorly coached on offense.   We could have easily lost to Rice or Wyoming if it wasn't for the fact that those two teams were simply not as big and strong as our boys.   OU will stomp the living shit out of UT tomorrow.   I hope I'm terribly wrong.

I could see UT staying close -- or maybe even winning -- tomorrow, and becoming overconfident for the Nebraska game because of it. That, combined with Nebraska's already fully-stoked fire and the lack of any consequences for a blowout (since they'll never play UT again anyway), could lead to a shit-stomping of biblical proportions.

Well, I forgot about that little detail, but it assumes that they'll manage not to screw the pooch against K-State, Okie State, or A&M. Actually, I guess they'd have to lose to two of them, which does seem unlikely. But this looks like the unit that just might be able to pull it off.

Mike Davis will not play because of his knee injury.

Quit being a pussy. Texas wins by a hundred tomorrow, give or take a safety.

My vagina has nothing to do with it.

This team gets murdered by OU tomorrow.
