In an act of team unity, stupidity – or maybe a bit of both – the Cardinals huddled around each other in the visiting clubhouse at Minute Maid Park and shaved their heads.

Classic.

The decision to shave their heads was made during a closed door, players only meeting Monday afternoon in which the Cardinals discussed ways to get themselves back in the NL Central race.

"Everybody Hurts" and "Shiny Happy People".  How is it that 2 of REM's worst songs became 2 of their most popular?

First time I heard something off of Murmur, probably "Radio Free Europe" in '82 or '83, it got my attention.  At the time it sounded fresh and different.  But it was pretty much downhill from there, especially once Mitch Easter and Don Dixon left.

Everybody Hurts wasn't a bad song;  maudlin lyrics maybe, great tune tho.
I think they were relevant and great up to and including Monster.  After that, they sort of fell off.  Right about the time U2 became mostly irrelevant...

Sort of?  They fell of a cliff.  "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" was a disaster, then came the anyuerism (sp?), and then the terrible decision to go with drum kits.

Disagree.  "All That You Can't Leave Behind" and "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" may not be on the level of the "Unforgettable Fire"-"Joshua Tree"-"Achtung Baby" trifecta, but they're very good albums.

Relevant as in not just going through the motions.  See the entry "The Rolling Stones Since Tattoo You"...

How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb was a very good album, true, but it sounded pretty much like All That You Can't Leave Behind, just a better version of it.

That's arguable;  Joshua Tree was a pretty big departure, but I think they sort of got back to their roots with Achtung Baby and Zooropa.  Pop was ok, but after that it all sounds the same.  Like anything Rush did from Roll the Bones on....

Like might be a bit of an over-statement.  It's definitely not up to past performances.    Let me put it this way.  It's in the library, not necessarily the regular rotation.  Compared to the crap that came out at the same time, from other artists, I'll take it.

But that said, that was during a pretty rough stretch for Peart.  I was surprised they released anything, to be honest.  The retirement tour was actually a welcome announcement.

The fuck?  These boys aren't retireing any time soon.  Check out Beyond the Lighted Stage if you haven't already.

Snakes and Arrows is fantastic.

easy now.  I'm talking about Test For Echo. I haven't had a chance to pick up snakes and arrows, so I went to their website.  Whatever they are streaming was pretty awesome.  My boss walked up and said "Two things.  First whatever you are listening to ROCKS!  Second, keep it playing while we make a beverage run."

You can still rock in America, last time I looked.

Only in Karaoke bars.

In another sad note, a couple days ago I was actually thinking about the fact that I saw Night Ranger in concert at least two times (maybe a third time -- I don't quite remember).  Once they opened up for Black Sabbath at the Coliseum.  They headlined the second time.  I think it was at Astroworld.

Brad Gillis was a guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, prior to Night Ranger.  He played on Speak of the Devil, which was Ozzy doing all Sabbath tunes.

Sort of?  They fell of a cliff.  "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" was a disaster, then came the anyuerism (sp?), and then the terrible decision to go with drum kits.
bill berry had the aneurysm on the monster tour along with stipe and mike mills having surgical procedures.   they signed an (then record) 80 million dollar contract with warner brothers before the release of hi-fi.  hi-fi was recorded on the monster tour and berry left the band just before the beginning of sessions for "up."  i haven't kept up with them regularly since monster, although i did go see their tour in 2003 at a 1/3'd full woodlands.

years ago i was in harrah's in new orleans
minding my own business
when this rockstar-ish guy cruises past me
we lock eyes.  he smiles.  i smile.  and then i realize
it's jack blades from night ranger!

a few drunken minutes later, i spot him at a slot machine
so i waltz up and ask for his autograph
without taking his eyes off the machine, he takes my pen and dollar bill
and scribbles his name across it:
tommy shaw

Randy Rhodes was the lead guitarist for Ozzy, may he RIP.  He also played Classical, so I still don't see the point Night Ranger being Metal because of their guitarist.

Metal = Metallica, Megadeath, Sabbath, etc.

Hair Band = NR, Twisted Sister, Poison, etc.

I think they knew they were "hair".  Interestingly, Night Ranger started out as the remains of a soul/funk band, with Gillis, Blades and Jerry Martini, formerly of Sly & The Family Stone.

Well, I don't believe there's a sharp line, and I think "metal" encompasses a lot of area.  But given the choice between "hair" and "metal", Motley Crue is "hair".

True.  I have been a huge fan of the Crue since Too Fast for Love.  For the most part, I have trouble placing them with the hair bands.

Kinda like AC/DC.  They were really strong when Bon Scott was alive.  Not sure where they fit.  I would say Rock, which all of the above (Air Supply included?) fit.

I have as much trouble placing *them* in the same category as Sabbath as I do Night Ranger.  But lots of room in "metal" for lots of folks.

They were metallish before the sister christian years.

They played Sister Christian when they opened for Sabbath.

My friend won these tickets from 93Q.  The guys sitting behind us were wearing leather and spikes and my friend kept turning around (maybe not so discretely) because these guys were so over the top.  Finally, one of them says to my friend, "turn around one more time and I'm gonna rip your fucking head off."  My friend didn't move for the rest of the concert.

I love Triumph.  Been watching Fight the Good Fight on Youtube for about a month.

i wiki'd them and saw this -
"(there is a) small possibility of a Van Halen/Triumph tour that Live Nation might pitch to them for 2011"
..because chickens are decent people.

Don't forget the plad shirt and dirty jeans.  Oh yeah berkinstocks.

Let's you and me get something straight right now. If you ever, EVER accuse me of wearing (I can barely type this it's so disgusting) Birkenstocks I will find out where you live and I will go Pete Townshend on your hair metal LP collection.

For chuck, it's Mephisto or nothing.

Oddly enough a friend of mine was their lighting director back in the 80's and he left an all-access pass with me a couple of days ago. Why he thought I'd want it I have no idea.

So you are not a fan?  I'm not trying to start something, I'm just kind of surprised.  How about The Brains?  The dBs?

Here's an odd musical crossover:  On September 18, Warehouse Live is hosting The Rebirth Brass Band in the studio, and Bullet For My Valentine in the ballroom.  I can't imagine much mingling between patrons there.

You want me to come after you, too, tough guy? Let's see how Pretzel Logic sounds in a dozen pieces.

Probably about the same, actually, now that I think about it.

Of course I'm a fan. I liked Afoot and Cypress quite a bit when they came out. I just have no idea why my friend left the lanyard and the pass with me.

I liked Let's Active fine but I was very into the dB's. What kind of Big Star fan would I be if I hadn't been? I saw them a bunch and especially like their first two records. I still drag them out every now and then.

Once opened for the dB's in the late 80s at the Antenna Club in Memphis. They were good guys. Nice but serious guys. Dedicated to their profession. We were guys with day jobs in a Zappa influenced band that had no plans but to get the crowd to party and to jam our asses off. Will Rigby the dB's drummer, really got a kick out of us. He told me he knew how the guys in Iron Butterfly must have felt after Led Zepplin opened for them. It was one of the nicest things anyone ever said to me. Peter Holsapple's only comment was, "too much." Which I also took as a compliment.

Now that's an awesome show.

So these are the concerts I attended this summer:

Squeeze/Cheap Trick
Asia
The English Beat

In my defense, the only one of these that I bought tickets to was the Beat.  My wife dragged us to see the other shows.  As for the shows themselves, the Beat were great.  Squeeze was very good.  Asia wasn't terrible, but Steve Howe is really old.  Scary old.  Like so old, that he looked like Nosferatu the Vampire.  Like so old, I think he may even be older than Jim R.  Cheap Trick was indescribably bad.  So bad that I took out my blackberry and played texas hold em.
Boom!

I can't say it was all downhill, because despite the fact that Automatic for the People includes Everybody Hurts, it also includes one of my all-time favorite songs in "Nightswimming".

Also, "The River" is an all time favorite of mine.  Actually, aside from "nightswimming" and "the river" I was kind of meh on the entire album.

I always felt like I would appreciate "The River" more if it didn't immediately follow "Nightswimming".

So my Ipod was on shuffle today and in the middle of my lunchtime run, "You Can Still Rock in America" came on.  Great workout song.
