So who's pitching for PIT tonight? A lefty?
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

A tough lefty for the Astros, Paul Maholm.

I'll be at the game tomorrow with my youngest urchin. Anybody else making the trip? $9 box seats were too good to pass up. Figured I'd hit Marini's after the game and chip away at Robb Walsh's list.

I'm at Target Field watching the Twins host the A's. Gorgeous stadium, no cows climbing poles just a clean intimate ballpark with great lines. Mainly it's a lot of fun to be in a sold out ballpark heading into a great pennant race. There's a fantastic energy in the park.  I'm looking forward to feeling that in Houston again.

so, Happy. Do you still think Norris is just a 7th inning guy?

He's actually using a change up now.

So I'm watching football and following the Astros on a gamecast. I see

- P. Feliz hit for M. Bourn

and then the inevitable

- P. Feliz struck out swinging

What was the logic here? Obviously a LHP but was Bourn hurt somewhere along the way? Why Feliz?

Q 1B Bourgeois PR; Norris Sac 2-3 Bourgeois to 2B; Feliz to PH for Bourn (who's hitting under the Mendoza line this season against lefties) Ks on an ugly fucking swing; Sanchez 1B to RF RBI 2-2 takes 2B on stupid throw over cutoff man home; Pence 2B RBI 3-2 Astros (stupid pitch by Maholm;should have nibbled instead of tossing Pence a cookie) Maholm out and Resop in; Lee F8 on Bourn-like play by McCutcheon. 3-2 Good Guys Top 8.

I never said that he definitely was. Obviously, I've liked what I've seen tonight. And I liked his last start, as I wrote on here. He needs to be consistent though, and he hasn't proven that he can be consistent. Just doing it once in a while is not good enough.

All you without MLB.TV and don't have to see Keith Hernandez talk about his mustache 3 times a game - every single friggin' game - might not understand... but... if I ever see the him in person I'm going to punch him in the face (or, 'lip jacket' as he proclaims in the commercial)!  You might think you understand, but you don't (even if you desire to punch him in the face for some other reason).

just fucking with you. He pitched 7 solid which makes him a good 7 inning guy in my book.

Lyon on for his 5th game in a row--I'm questioning that change in light of how well Lopez was pitching and the fact that Lyon has appeared in four in a row. Doumit L1; Clement 1B great play by Bourgeois on a ball that is two bags if Lee is aout there Cedeno PR steals 2B; Young PH for Diaz Ks on a nasty 12-6 hook; Milledge PH for Resop 4-3. 3-2 Astros FINAL I'm glad that it worked out for Lyon, who looked good tonight.

not sure. On the way out a guy in front of me collapsed and started having a seizure. My dad, a doctor, went to help but was chased away by the guys family who went on to perform the sorriest excuse of CPR I've ever seen.

Just saw the replay of Bud's 14 Ks on ESPN.  Hadn't hit me that 13 of the 14 were swinging strikeouts.  Look even more impressive seeing all those swings and misses.

Norris really mixed in his changeup tonight, which, in my opinion, is a difference maker  for him because it makes his fastball, which is pretty good, look even better.

From Buster's payperblog:

B) He had power stuff: Norris relied on a fastball-slider combo to mow down the Pirates, throwing only nine changeups, the fewest he's thrown in his last nine starts.

I knew that he threw fewer changeups from watching the game. However, I think that the ones that he threw were much better than I've seen before and came at some key times in the game, particularly one in the second inning.  IIRC, he even got two strikeouts on changeup throws, one in the second inning (McCutcheon) and one other (can't remember who that was) later.

No problem, my maign.  I'm with you.  You actually watched it, Buster (likely) and I didn't.  Nine well placed well thrown changeups are better than twenty crappy ones.  I was just adding context to your observations.

Actually, for a pitcher like Norris, I would expect no more than 10-15% of his pitches to be changeups. If those figures are correct (I didn't chart the pitches, so I'll take their word for it that he actually threw nine changeups), then he was slightly under 10% changeups (9/110). The key is that he has to feature it just enough to put that seed of doubt in the hitter's mind that he might throw it. The changeup is important to Norris because everything else he throws is hard, and his primary secondary pitch (slider) is okay but not great.

Wait a minute.  He was allowed to throw more than 100 pitches?  Heads are gonna roll.
