Edwin Jackson, anyone?
« on: July 30, 2010, 10:20:28 am »
White Sox are close to acquiring Edwin Jackson from D'Backs, per both Stark and Rosenthal.  Expectation seems to be that they will then spin him for Dunn or Berkman.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

ERA over 5?  Only been below 4 one season (3.62).  Owed ~$9mm next year of which the Dbacks are reportedly paying none.  Makes no sense.  BUT he threw a NO-HITTER and that's MARKETABLE.

There was a time 5-7 years ago that Edwin was considered an uber-prospect in the Dodgers system.  Somewhere along the way he lost his ability to control the strike zone and hasn't been the same since.

OK, what do the Sox have to offer?

Nightengale: White Sox pursuing Brett Myers
Joe Cowley: Kenny Williams has "something big cooking", not Jackson
Ed Price: "buzz" about White Sox going after Berkman

Let's start with Gordon Beckham and go from there.

They've got a pitcher or 2, an outfielder or 2, maybe a catcher or 2 and that's about it for what I think the Astros would be looking at.  My knowledge of their system is small though.

Now I've heard the WS are trying to get both Berkman and Myers.  Any deal would include Dan Hudson, their best young pitching prospect.

okey, dokey. send a bus for all the players we want for both.

i really respect Myers for what he has done in Houston.

He needs to go back to the puca-shell necklace.  He was kick-ass when he wore that.

I expect the Sox don't have enough young players/prospects for the Astros to trade both Myers and Berkman.

Berkman, Myers and possibly Quintero for Hudson; Morel and two Single A pitchers. Chicago gets 7 million, Pick up LB 2011 OPTION

Is the assumption that since Drayton gave money for Oswalt he'll give it in every trade?

This can't be since Hudson was traded for Edwin Jackson.

I think too much is being made out of money being included in a trade.  It's just one of several variables intended to make both sides of the equation "equal".  It does not mean that an owner paid for someone to take a player off his hands, etc.

And I was just getting ready to write that I give up as there's too much noise to work through.

My first time ever using live search on twitter.  Pretty cool to watch the place go ape shit after a trade.  Then 30 mins later somone announces the same trade as if they have an insider.

Anyway, plugging in "Berkman" right now is interesting

Fuck.  I just did that and got ten people retweeting Richard Justice that Berkman will be traded to the Yankees this afternoon.

Thanks a lot.

Me too.  Certainly has an ACE mentality.  My 20-year-old son HAS to see him pitch every turn in the rotation, he just loves the way he battles.

Rosenthal: Berkman could be in play for #Yankees under right circumstances. Tight with Pettitte. Likely waive no-trade for NYY. Depends on price.

But more importantly, Noe wants to know: Do they have a Brendan Ryan-type available?

Justice retweeted Rosenthal, then 30 minutes later basically repeated it but in his own words.

Surprisingly, he did not contradict himself in that time.

I don't know why Astros fans care about the money so much.  This year and next are non-starters in terms of playoff conention.  We don't need the salary space to make in-season acquisitions anytime soon.  I haven't gotten the impression that the player development budget is in any way dependent on the big league salary total.  So, from a fans perspective, if paying every single dollar remaining on traded players contracts brings back more prospects, I say bully for Drayton McLane.

He is buying draft picks, retroactivley undoing the mistakes of previous years.  It is his money going to Philly, not our hopes for this year or next.  We should be lining up to shake his hand.

So this would be McLane putting his money where his mouth is?

I, for one, couldn't possibly give a shit less. To me, the money is only relevant in terms of trying to figure out what's possible – it's a part of the mechanics of the deal, but has absolutely no impact on me as a fan whatsoever.

Besides, most of that $11 MM was simply pulled from the "Whatever it takes for Roy to go away" contingency fund.  So it's all within budgetary guidelines.
