NCAA Super Regional - UT vs TCU
« on: June 07, 2010, 02:04:54 pm »
Just as during football season, time for another interesting debate between UT and TCU.  This time it will be settled on the field at least.

Two great teams and pitching staffs.  I do not think these two teams should have been matched up before the College World Series.  Geography must have stifled any creative analysis on the part of the NCAA (surprise, surprise).

A year ago, TCU was able to stretch the #1 Horns to 3 games.  The one TCU pitcher who beat Texas last year is now in the Frog bullpen.  The Texas staff looks scary, but TCU may be the one team in the country that can match them 1-2-3.  Not sure how the bullpens compare.

Look forward to watching this weekend's games!  Can't go in person - I'll be in NYC for the Yankees and Astros.

Oh please.  If you want to win the title, beat the team you play.

And on a side note, I don't remember the TCU vs. UT debate in football being all that interesting, just whiny.

I have a different take on rivals meeting in the super regional.  I am pulling for Alabama to upset Ga. Tech and Auburn to finish off Clemson.  That would mean an Alabama v Auburn at Auburn.  College baseball in the state of Alabama will have more attention and excitement than any time in the last 10 years.  It will also guarantee that one state school will travel to Omaha.  Again hasn't happened in over 10 years.
Always ready to go to a game.

If by whiny, you mean a bunch of "look at me, look at me", I totally concur.

The baseball stadium in Auburn is the nicest college stadiums I have ever seen. Absolutely beautiful. all brick, real grass.  They ought to be able to attrract top talent just because of the facility.

Hang out in other threads then.

I am happy that my team is playing for the chance to go to the College World Series this weekend.  What is your angle?

Matching up TCU and Texas this weekend means you are not going to get the 8 best teams in Omaha, IMHO.

But I understand that, when you are a program trying to get to the CWS for the first time, you are probably going to have to get it done on someone else's field.

It is nice.  A few years ago, baseball america voted it the best college stadium.  However, if players aren't getting drafted, the facility don't mean much.  After Hal Baird retired, things were not good.  Now with John Pawlowski is there, things are looking up.  They hit the most homers in NCAA this year.

The game tonight is a sell out and they will be streaming it live.

The goal is to get a National Champion.  If you want your team to win the title, hope they beat whomever they're playing in the tournament.  It's pretty simple.

And here we go.  NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT TCU. You may have a pretty salty team this year, and hey congrats on the Number 6 ranking you're carrying around.

Accept that you are a fan/alum of a small school that does very well within their small conference.  You benefit from this.  Be happy with it. Enjoy playing New Mexico State and Air Force 8 times a year.

I assume the resident Texas Alums neither need nor appreciate you trying to pretend that sports-wise you live in the same stratosphere. And that's all you're doing, seeking validation, in the guise of "talkin' baseball."

For the sake of rivalry, I'd like to see Texas lose this weekend, but they won't.  They're Texas and you're TCU.  Good season, now take your participation medal and go home.

UT fans seem to get particularly offended at the notion that there other schools in the state (or universe) that have the audacity to excel athletically.

Hope you enjoy the games this weekend.  Fuck you very much.

You are fucking annoying.  I went to college out of state and so feel at liberty to make that judgment as a non-biased third party.  I really won't go out of the way to check, but I'd assume that 70% or so of your posts are related to TCU homerism.  If you want to talk about TCU, go to a TCU board.  It's clear you want to talk about TCU to piss off a bunch of UT folks, which makes you a douche and a troll.  It's readily apparent that your penis is about as long as your IQ is high.

I can kind of see where AstroFrog is coming from.  I am also a fan of a totally inferior in-state school and I'd love to believe that, given the right circumstances, my school could also compete on the same level as, say, Texas (another one of my schools).

That being said, it's pretty clear AstroFrog is just hoping one of the Horns fans (again, which I'm one of) will finally go "wow, you know, you're right; your good-but-not-elite school is finally playing on our level."   And if it was true, ain't gonna happen.   In any sport.

I'm saying this as someone in a similar position...if you're hoping the Horns fans will suddenly find TCU to be a "peer" just quit now man.

No, it is clear that talking about TCU at all is enough to piss off UT folks.

I could not care less what UT fans think of TCU, but when you have two Texas teams playing for a berth in the CWS, or ranked in the top 5 in football, this seems like a relevant sports conversation to have and this board is the appropriate place to broach it.

As for pointing out the fact that an 8,000-student private school with a fraction of UT's alumni base and athletic budget is competing at this level, virtually neck and neck with the Longhorns (in football and baseball), forgive me for thinking that this qualifies as a notable Texas sports story.

This is ridiculous.  If TCU had to play a Big 12 schedule in either football or baseball, you wouldn't even be on this board.  The only thing you're neck and neck with is delusion.

Okay, I am done with the TCU thing.

But, there is some bizarre post-modern sense of sports fandom that seems to be in effect here.  Do I have it right:

1)  Don't talk about your team (unless it is UT)
2)  Don't betray any sense of ambition for your team's success
3)  Don't indicate any sense of satisfaction when your team has success (this is gloating)
4)  No upward mobility in the sports world.  If you team wasn't good circa. 1980, shut the fuck up.

Am I forgetting anything?

Honestly, I don't want to fight with you people.  I enjoy the hell out of sports and life discussion on this forum.  Most of you have forgotten more baseball than I'll ever know (which means I don't post in the TZ out of respect for the forum rules/norms).

Step 10 – Take the high road, and say ‘I am done with this’, in a lofty way

Step 11 – Get hammered for it

Step 12 – Come back in (presumably on a lower road) and say, ‘Yes I was done with this, but…’ and proceed to rehash arguments made in Steps 4, 6, and 8

Step 13 - Profit?!?!?
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Step 13 - Profit?!?!?

Pretty sure Step 13 is "Get hammered for it"

TCU scores one in the top of the 2nd.

4 of first 5 Longhorns down on Ks.  But to be fair, the TCU pitcher does look like a complete dumbass which is distracting.

1-0 TCU through 2.

TCU getting on base, but several caught stealings have slowed them down.

1-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd.

Lefty freshman, Matt Purke (from Klein HS), looks solid for TCU.  5 Ks through three

Horns get a single, stolen base then take 3rd on ball thrown in CF with 2 outs.  Grounder to second closes the inning though.

1-0 through 3

Lusson walks.  Draws a visit to the mound from TCU.  They're going to ride this horse as long as possible

Rowe Ks swinging

Etier sac bunt advances Lusson to second.  2 Out

Walla hit by pitch.  That will do it for Purke.  Helluva outing.

Special day for TCU.

Monitored the game on Gametracker from a Metro North train after attending the Sunday game of Astros-Yankees

Coincidentally, former Frog baseball player Chad Huffman made his major league debut for the Yankees in RF on Sunday.  Got an infield hit in his first MLB at-bat.  Yankee Stadium jumbotron put up a display saying he had played baseball and football at Texas Christian Univ.  It was cool being there to see that - wonder if he's going to stick with the Yanks or if he was called up due to an injury.

A few observations from the game (or interviews during)...in between naps of course

1.  The TCU coach needs to tell the goofy kid to put his hat on straight for all TV interviews
2.  The Texas kids stating "being the last team to dogpile the mound when they get there" - probably stinging a bit now
3.  (and maybe this was on the disney sports channel afterwards...like I said, I was napping a bit) The negativity towards the Texas program for all of their "shortcomings" in the past year...Losing in the 1st round of the NCAABB (men and women), losing the Super-Regional, Losing the BCS title game.  Wow...people are setting the bar pretty freaking high.  Getting to the Super Regional is pretty freaking good IMO.  Getting beat in the NCAA tourney as an 8 seed ain't the end of the world and getting a chance to play for a national championship (in any sport) is pretty tough to do.  It was like they had some kind of horrendous year...do the alums see it that way?  I know UT has a different set of standards, but I thought it was pretty harsh, myself.

Well, we should probably use yours (and anyone else that has one) too.  Let's just average them all together.

I don't know, man.  I know a couple of the other guys involved and they've got some crazy ideas.  Not crazy enough to leave out of the mix, of course.   Let's just agree to average them, but leave out the outliers on both ends for some reason.

I saw it, too.  It was a 10 second filler that a temp at ESPN probably put together.  Pure idiocy and the talking heads just read it off with no comments to add.

I was really impressed by that TCU catcher.  Framed pitches and called a game like a pro.

So Coach, are you saying Mark should take back the Father's Day gift he got you?
