No fucking way. I cannot believe that in a billion years to end the perfecto. Guy was out by a full step. You have to give that to the pitcher in this situation when it is close, but dude was out.  Makes me sick to my stomach.

It's not even my perfect game, but seriously.

You know this has to be one of those Haddix type perfect games.

* - Oh and by the way, Galarraga threw a perfect game on June 2, 2010 against the Indians but Jim Joyce is a piece of shit.

MLB has to step in and give Galarraga his perfect game.     I also wonder if this will increase support for expanding the use of instant replay in baseball.    Perhaps a few manager's challenges similar to the NFL.

My sister and my six-year-old niece called me right as the ninth inning started in Detroit. I played it cool and talked to both of them while watching the first two outs, including the unfuckingreal catch Jackson made to preserve the perfecto, but when the 1b ump made that call I lost my shit in the middle of my niece blathering on about the neighbor's cat.

I cannot believe what I saw. What a terrible call. Galarraga got hosed out in the worst way possible. Hello instant replay.

I'm still trying to fathom how you call the 27th batter in a potential perfect game safe on anything other than an obvious hit.

What the hell??? Catcher's interference on Q?!?

ETA: Apparently, when Q shifted a bit closer to the plate, Willingham's bat grazed Q's mitt on that 3rd strike, and Willingham was sent to 1st. So instead of an inning-ending strikeout for Wandy, now we're at bases loaded with 2 outs. This doesn't count as an AB for Willingham, and Q gets an error.

Not sure what he was doing way up in the batters box like that.  Home Wandy has him covered though

The replay from the side didn't show any movement on the glove as the bat came by. Guess the ump saw/heard something.

Probably didn't even take much intuition.  I imagine the HP ump verbally called the interference.

"I don't know what to do. I just cost that kid a perfect game." "Biggest call of my career, and I kicked the shit out of it."

"That wasn't a call. That was a history call. And I missed it from here to this wall."

"I don't blame the Tigers for anything that was said. I don't blame one person a bit."

Selig won't have the stones to acknowledge it in the record books, because that would open up the whole "asterisks for steroids" issue again.

Selig won't have the stones to acknowledge it in the record books, because that would open up the whole "asterisks for steroids" issue again.

Also Selig is a giant pussy.

Selig is undoubtedly a pussy, but you can't go revising things after the fact, because then you'll never be able to figure out where to draw the line. This has to stand, because that's the way the umpire called it.

But that doesn't mean that the umpire in question has to be employed next year.

Hohn should be fired before Joyce.

At least Joyce was man enough to admit his mistake.

They can create a new ruling for the official scorer — error on the ump. It doesn't change the outcome of the game (wins and losses), but can change the way something is scored.  So, tonight's would still be a perfect game, with the batter taking first on EU3 (error on ump at 1B).  A missed homerun call would still be ruled a HR, but with the batter stopping at 2B on the error.  Official scorer having access to instant replay, but it not affecting the calls made during the course of the game.

They'd never do it, but it could preserve the records without changing the outcome of the game as played out on the field.  Then again, I am sure there are plenty of problems with this idea too.

Starting with it's kind of nuts?

We were just talking about it here.  An hour after demanding MLB change this to a perfect game, we realized that if they do that, you've got ever family of every pitcher ever fucked and tomorrow by noon you've got, instead of 21 perfect games, 86 perfect games.

I don't think any decision should be retroactive.  Just like any other new rule or rule change, it only takes effect for games played after it is instituted.

And only controversial calls should be reviewed.  Maybe review is only done if the manager requests it within a certain amount of time after the last out.

But I agree that they can't change this to a perfect game.  As the rules are, there is no way to challenge an ump's call.  What he says, is.  It was a bad call, but it is official.

I dont think so.  That this was the 27th out DOES make a difference.  There's no argument about what would have happened next if the correct call had been made, etc.  Being blatently wrong just for the sake of some purists is bad business.  They can and should correct the call.   I think Selig will tomorrow.  This is too ugly not to address.

How about rather than changing the rules and revising rulings and adding instant replay the league find a group of 70 or so individuals who can make obvious calls like "out" when a fielder beats a runner to a bag by a full step or "foul" when a ball lands two feet foul of the line when the umpire is standing ten feet away rather than the self-satisfied and belligerent group of fat motherfuckers they employ now?

They should relegate umpires. Take a vote among players and managers at the end of the year and the worst tenth or quarter or third or whatever it is get fired and their replacements brought up from minor leagues based on a similar vote there. This umpire for life bullshit that the league employs now is certainly not working.

But if you get rid of the umpire for life thing we have now, you see umpires making calls just for the sake of re-election, which will lead to corruption, which will lead to calls just being bought by the insurance industry.

As of tonight, I've changed my mind about instant replay.  Don't know if I want some kind of 'coaches challenge' or give the option for the umps to review the play like they do on some NBA 3 pt. calls, or what specifically, but there should, strike that, MUST be some way to make sure something like this doesn't happen.  I'm still pissed off about it.

Oh yeah, and I wish rather than pitching to the next batter the Tigers had simply all walked off the field and not 'finished' the game.

And I'm in favor of a fifth upmire, in a replay booth, buzzing down to the filed to overturn a call.

Only instead of a buzzer, it's a tazer.

They wouldn't make calls for the sake of re-election because if they did everyone would know they were doing it and they'd be pissing off one dugout and the whole league would know that they're shit.

MM, I too am completely amazed by the way the Tigers are handling this. I've always liked Leyland and the Tigers organization in general and now I like them even more.
