Restaurants in Memorial City/Town and Country area
« on: April 07, 2010, 08:03:08 am »
Going to be in Houston next week and will be having lunch in the aforementioned area.

Interested in getting any insider tips on good spots in this area.  I am Texan in exile (live in Vermont), so Tex-Mex or BBQ are priorities but not absolutely essential.  Just looking for alternatives to the many chains that I am sure are in the area.

Many thanks.

Don't know if it's still there, but there used to be a good Tex-Mex place right off of the Tollway between Memorial and I-10.

Excellent Korean in that area, but that's not what you're asking about...

Avoid Taste of Texas.

Anyone have an opinion on Cyclone Anaya's?

I recommend Guadalajara Mexican Grille. It's located on I-10 between Gessner and Bunker Hill. It was formally located at the Beltway and Kimberly, not sure if that's the same place HH mentions above.

There's a Goode Co not too far down I-10. Not great, but could do worse.

I didn't know it was still around. We used to eat there regularly when it was on Richmond just off Jeannetta. Back then it had really good food and some of the best margaritas in town.

I loved the old (original?) one off of Durham.  They closed it down, but now apparently there's a new one there, plus a few all over town.  It's gone a little upscale, at least the one downtown has, but it used to be very, very good.  Great ritas and used to be the best salsa in town.  I'm sure it's still pretty good, though I haven't eaten there in years.

I think that was it, before it became a chain.  I just looked it up, and I think that building is now Escalante.  I used to eat at Guadalajara there back before the Beltway and before all that "new" shopping stuff at T&C.

Avoid Taste of Texas.

What happened to it?  I took a date there in high school and remember loving the steak and rolls w/cinnamon butter, but it cost a fortune (relative).  I was actually thinking about taking the family there on our next Astros trip.

I think the closest cyclone's to the I-10/T&C area is at Augusta and Woodway, which is really not all that close (10 minute drive from the Chimney Rock exit).  There used to be an El Tiempo on I-10 but that shut down.

There's a Cyclone Anaya's is the "City Centre" devlopment that I believe replaced the old Town and Country Mall.  I am from the Clear Lake/Friendswood area, so I never knew this part of town well.

The City Center (sic) development is quite impressive, in a Stepford kind of way.  The Yard House gets packed and there's a bunch of mid-to-high end restaurants around, all within walking distance of each other.  Not sure what they have in the Tex-Mex genre, but I bet there is one right there.

Escalante's isn't bad, but it's "new" Mexican. Grilled and no lard and not terribly traditional and all that. If you're looking for autentico Tex-Mex, that isn't the place.

There is a blast from the past!  Cyclone's place used to make one of the best chile relleno around.  That was about 20 years ago though, so I'm not sure the former wrestler has the same crew of people making the food (or if Cyclone even owns the place any more).

Here is their website. Looks like the original owners are still involved. They are opening a location near me in NorthTex so I am interested in opinions of them. I remember that location on Durham although I never ate there.

Holy crap, they have locations up here already. I had no idea. We moved to Clear Lake not long after the Richmond location closed, so I thought they literally closed rather than moved. If their food is anything like it used to be, it's really good stuff.

I'd opt for Guadalajara's over Escalante's; I don't think the Cyclone Anaya's in Memorial City Centre is open, yet, but maybe it just did.

La Fiesta on Gaylord, just south of I-10 between Bunker Hill and Echo Lane, was just relocated/updated--real close to Memorial High School.  Their cheese enchildas were legendary at the old place--allegedly.  They were good enough, though.  It's a little less systematic with its menu and service, closer to what you're likely to remember Tex-Mex joints were like before the Pappasito's approach took over--"My name is Bilko, and I'll be doing everything in my power to persuade you to add a $4 topping to your fish, your chicken, your goat steak, your nachos and/or even your queso."

There's a new Lupe Tortilla's in the Kroger Shopping Center just west of Echo Lane (eastbound side of I-10).  Most folks have a love/hate with that place, but there's no denying its following.  It's the only one without a giant sandbox for the kids.

Lot of folks like Cazadores on Kingsride, just west of Gessner and Memorial City Mall.  I say caveat emptor on that one; it's a non-descript place but the simple stuff is pretty reliable there.  Pretty good bar-b-q place across the street--Papa Joe's.

If you're actually in the mall for any reason and have to eat, Berryhill's is a better option than anything else in there.  Maybe you'll spot a Phoebe Cates clone or even a Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The best Mexican joints in that area tend to be on the north side of I-10, along Gessner.  However, that may be getting too far from your working base.

Pretty reliable Italian place in T&C Village, a Mandola offering called Pronto Cucino.  It's just like it sounds; quick-order Italian like La Madedleine and Cafe Express.

For the quality of steak, you're better off going to Saltgrass, which I'm not recommending, but that's the level of food there.

If you want to pay that amount of money for a steak...Flemings, Morton's, Vic & Anthony's, Pappa Bros.

Honestly, if you're just missing Tex-Mex, you might as well include Pappasitos on 10 (inbound between Beltway 8 and Gessner).  They've recently dropped their menu prices, so it's a bit more in line with what you're getting

Doesn't seem like Cyclone still has Chile Relleno on the menu.  Too bad, he had one of the best in town.  The grill was always good Norteno fair, like the Steak Al La Tampiquena (Tampico Style Grill).

Interesting note on Pappasito's.  Not interested in going there, but that was always a heavy lift for my teenage budget back in the day.  I guess $27 for Fajitas for two was finally recognized as ridiculous.

I am a native Houstonian and have never heard of Cyclone Anaya's. Weird. And it seems like a place I would not necessarily hate reflexively. I bet I could get to dislike it intensely over time, though.

Or you could just go to the Midtown location (next to the Fish, across from Farrago on Babgy and Grey I think) around 7 pm on a Thursday night.

You know what? I live not three blocks from there and I have maintained a general awareness that there is a restaurant there on the corner but it does not appear inviting and I never investigated it. I will say that I have eaten at the sushi place down the street, twice, and was not traumatized. I don't recommend it, but it is not nearly as bad as it might very well be. Hey, anyone been to the newish sushi place on Louisiana and Elgin, Sushi Raku?

The food at Cyclone's is fine.  I guess I've mostly been there at lunch when somebody I'm with wants a margarita but for some reason doesn't want to head over to Ninfa's on Navigation.  The fact of midtown (and I mean that culturally, HH, if not geographically) generally keeps me away.

The original one closed, they moved a little down the street a while later.  And the fact that they have matching flatware and cloth napkins makes them far more fru-fru than they were years ago.
