Uniwatch talks Astros throwback
« on: April 07, 2010, 05:38:27 am »
The Astros throwback game coming up this Saturday sent Uniwatch on a quest to find some Astros Spacette and groundskeepers photos.  LINK

Great info and links included within so check 'em out.  The piece also references a documentary about the dome, a trailer of which can be found on one of the Fleer Sticker Project links as well as a link to an Astrodome promo video.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again.  When *I* own the Astros, they shall revert to their "real" team colors (navy and orange) and they shall wear the shooting star suits from 1965.  With stirrups.  And black shoes.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I wish they were giving away the space suits Saturday.  Or better yet, Spacette dresses for the ladies!

Reduce Aramark's role in concessions, replace with local/regional businesses (Whataburger, Ninfa's, BBQ of your choice), make Shiner more readily available, and you'll have my vote.

Oh, and bring back Orbit. I liked Orbit.

Amen, brother. THE best looking uni they have worn. Of course the modern player won't show the stirrup.

Angel Stadium does this by incorporating local food places in with the standard fair.  Most of the places are at least real food places like Ruby's or Carl's Jr. and local businesses like Beach Pit BBQ.

This was the model that the Rockets had..at least while they were still in The Summit/Compaq.

One of the things I like about Angel Stadium are the big open air concourses with giant grills cooking sausages, hotdogs and burgers. The smell is awesome as you're entering the ballpark.

Citizen's Bank Park (Philly) does the same thing in the outfield -- local cheesesteaks and such. The rest of the place is traditional, probably Aramark, stuff.

Is there a kid heard crying at the end of it?  As such, weeping is the exact sentiment I would have had, had I known I was watching the very last display of the Home Run Spectacular.

Thanks for posting, BUWebGuy...

I had a Prince's burger at the game on Friday.  It was awful.

I was able to score a Shiner, though, so that's pretty great.

There's a followup story on ESPN's site today. Apparently some intrepid Houstonian went down to the library and got ahold of the original sketches to many of the Astrodome crew's original uniforms. Some great stuff in there.

I like the style of the numerals on the '65 vintage Astros unis almost as much as the letters and shooting star on the front.  The whole uniform is big league in every way and I would have given at least one nut to wear it.

I love every part of it.  I love the cream color instead of white, I love the numerals, I love the stirrups, and I REALLY love "Star-H" caps.  Sooooo classy.

Another little deatail that isn't obvious...the writing and logo on the front is embroidered.

Not sure if it was just my failing memory or not, but those unis from the back reminded me of the Giants' home unis from the 70s.  Well, the other way around I guess since the Astros unis were first.

The Giant's cream home color and their numerals are very similar (if not the same) as the '65 Houston.  I also think the numerals on the '65 unis were a carryover from the Colt .45 unis.

I wonder if part of the allure of these old unis is the fact that the Astros and the Dome in that time were futuristic, and even the rainbow guts kind of carried the theme.  I don't mind their current unis, but that lasso logo with its golly shucks cowboy Texan stereotype sort of misses that 'forward to the future' kind of image.

To me, the current home uni is blah. I like the Saturday home uni, sans pinstripes, more and it would be pretty sharp worn with the black cap but the red one they wear with it doesn't look so sharp. I'm completely tired of those red jerseys worn on the road. I'd rather see traditional road gray. I was glad to see the old unis well received. I wish they'd make them permanent.

Yeah, exactly, Houston is Space City, not train-cowboy city.  Although I'll bet the current unis would look a lot better if they just brought the colors back to orange and navy.
