MLB Bans Guns from Clubhouses
« on: February 23, 2010, 08:14:03 am »
In the wake of the Arenas incident, MLB bans guns from clubhouses.  They had a long discussion about this on XM this morning.  Luke Scott had a long sound bite in opposition to the policy-you remember how much that dude loves packing heat!  Ryan Franklin lamented that he would not be able to show his buddies his new guns in the clubhouse, which just sounds funny to me (can you imagine showing your buddies your new rifles at your work?)

Yeah, I can. It's a macho, clubby environment. I used to work at the Capitol and the showing of rifles and shotguns was common. Same kind of environment.

One day my boss walked from his parking space, through the west side of the Capitol, up the stairs and to his office holding his shotgun. Never stopped, never questioned, not even a second glance.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

Can one still take knives, swords, sticks of dynamite, and poison dart pea-shooters?
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit

Who did you work for at the Capitol and when? I worked there from 1996-2001.

Scott will be fine with a gun.  But they'll have to pry his Ninja stars and nun chucks from his cold, dead hand.

Yeah.  Not uncommon here.  Last December, my boss's boss called and asked if I could pick up some guns he bought from a guy in Midland and bring them back with me to Houston when I drove in for the Holidays.  I picked them up at the office and dropped them off at the office.

I'm thinking of a more typical scenario where you'd bring your rifle into the break room: "Look what I got this weekend!"  There's a good reason why most workplaces have a weapons ban.

Yeah...I get that part.  It's just that many folks out these parts think nothing of showing off weapons like you show off pictures of your kids.

Well, maybe I'm projecting, but if you work in a large corporate environment with thousands of people, as many of us do, it will get your ass fired.  It may also get your ass shot and/or jailed.

If you're trying to make a point, start typing something new.  I'm not pro- or anti- gun, I just think it's funny when people get their panties in a wad about a policy that should have probably been implemented 20 years ago, given the way our society is.  Large corporate entities that have a lot to lose from a PR standpoint (such as MLB) will always err on the side of caution vs. freedom.  Most places will fire you if you bring alcohol to work, too.  Silly, but this is the world we live in.

There's an insurance company office here in the Galleria, staffed wall to wall with rednecks.  One guy even wore his sidearm to mandatory sensitivity training.  I shit you not.

ETA:  These are the guys with whom I'm attending the rodeo cookoff.  My Union Jack belt buckle will annoy them no end.  These are the same guys who, when they heard that I was going to be in the Diamond Club, wanted to call the Secret Service and tell them that I'm a communist.  Conversations over lunch are lively.
