Orlando Cabrera?
« on: January 04, 2010, 07:01:40 pm »
Tim Dierkes of MLBTradeRumors.com is predicting today that the Astros make Orlando Cabrera an offer to be the starting SS. I don't see it. What do you think?

He's probably the best option within their price range if they're not really committed to giving Manzella a shot. I'd say give Manzella a shot and hope his defense justifies his hitting, and save the few million O-Cab would cost for the two extra draft picks we'll get when Valverde finally signs.

Offense and defense are separate.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I don't think that the Astros would spend the money for Cabrera anyway.

I've always thought Cabrera to be similar to Tejada and Furcal or maybe even a notch above those two, short, athletic shortstops with big arms that can make the amazing play, but prone to sloppy mechanics and subsequent mistakes. Defensively, in 2010, I think he would be similar to the 2009 version of Tejada with maybe a little more range. Offensively, I think Cabrera would make a nice two hitter. Overall, I would still prefer to play Manzella. I'm ready to get back to top notch defense, the pitching staff really needs it.

Hell, there are a lot worse things a guy could do, but it's hard for me to get real enthusiastic about a player so concerned with his own individual stats that he calls up to the official scorer, more than once, during the game to question a hit/error judgment. Especially, if his contribution probably only helps the team finish in 4th place instead of 5th. I like the idea of going with youth next year and saving the money.
