Colt named 2009 O'Brien Award Winner
« on: December 10, 2009, 06:44:42 pm »
Beats out finalists Tebow and Keenum. LINK

“Colt McCoy has led his team to an undefeated season and a berth in the BCS National Championship game. As a starter, he’s led Texas to more wins than any other college quarterback. Ever. And, he’s a great student. Those are just a couple of reasons why Colt McCoy is a richly deserving winner of the 2009 O’Brien Award,” said Verne Lundquist, chair of the national selection committee.

Add Walter Camp Football Foundation's player of the year award to the list as well. LINK

McCoy becomes the third player to win the award in back-to-back years, joining Ohio State star Archie Griffin (1974-75) and Southern California standout O.J. Simpson (1967-68). The honor is voted on by coaches and sports information directors.

Oh yeah, and the Maxwell Award. LINK

McCoy capped a big Thursday night for the Big 12, winning the Maxwell Award honoring the nation's best all-around player.

Are these "consolation" awards for not winning the Heisman or an indicator? Interesting that Ingram did not win the Doak Walker.

Very rarely does someone win the heisman without winning one of these awards (although strangely the Maxwell and Heisman rarely go to the same person). Ingram will probably be one of the exceptions (Look for the top 3 finishers to be Ingram, Suh/Gerhart).

The voting population for these awards are very different. The Camp award is decided by coaches and SIDs; the Maxwell by coaches, club members, writers and broadcasters; the Heisman is decided by members of the media and past winners in a regional setup.

Of the past ten years, four gentlemen have been awarded the Camp and Heisman. One who was not was Colt McCoy last year losing out to Bradford.

The four who won both? Troy Smith, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinert and Eric Crouch.

I had forgotten all about Troy Smith. Where is he now?
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

I meant any of the major awards (Doak Walker, Maxwell, Camp, O'Brien). Ingram didn't win anything last night. The last person to do that and go on to win the Heisman was Carson Palmer in 02 I believe. Before that, as far as I can tell, it was George Rogers in 1980 (Although the Doak Walker didn't exist back then). It's really rare. Ingram will most likely do it (although I hope not obviously).

I think he's still sitting on the Raven's bench.
