World Cup Draw
« on: December 04, 2009, 11:10:30 am »
It is starting right now, correct?  I know very little other than I know we don't want the US to be in the same group as Brazil. What are the best case/worst case scenarios?

It is.  I gave on the ESPN2 coverage after about 5 minutes when they brought in Morgan Freeman to talk about his rugby movie.  During the soccer world cup draw.  Because that's relevant.

Relatively newbie soccer fan's take on the worst case scenario:

Brazil
US
Cameroon
France

I'd swap Ivory Coast for Cameroon.

Basically, if France is in your group it is the group of death.  Add in any one of the Ivory Coast/Cameroon/Ghana and it's curtains for the USA.

Best case is any group w/ South Africa, right?

Yep.

Hell, being in a group with South Africa, Switzerland and Algeria is technically a possibility.

France barely got in. They're not the same side they were 8 years ago. Sure, it would be better if you didn't have to face them, but it's not a death sentence if they're there. The African teams can be scary.

They barely got in, but they're still basically a 1A seed.  The only reason they weren't a seeded team is because FIFA wanted to punish them for The Hand of Gaul (which, admittedly, is the only reason they're in at all... but still.)

No it isn't.  Germany has that slot booked, courtesy of that fat charlatan Blatter.

Charlize Theron, during the rehearsal draw earlier today, pulled the French number from the pot and said "Ireland".  I knew there was reason why I love her.

According to Grant Wahl (SI.com's soccer guy):

@GrantWahl: Worst-case WC draw scenario for US: Brazil, France, Ivory Coast. Best (for me): South Africa, Greece, Uruguay.

No one single real deadly draw.

Pretty even tourney.

Group G looks pretty deadly.  Just Portugal and Brazil alone is a deathknell for other teams, but to add Ivory Coast with their good players, that is one pretty good little group and one of them will be out.

What I think is awesome is that the likelihood that England takes Group C and Germany takes Group D is high, meaning they would avoid meeting each other, however if the USA or Australia pulls an upset and takes the the respected groups puts Germany and England right in each other's crosshairs.

Nice!

Brazil, Ivory Coast, and CryRonaldo's team might disagree.  The North Koreans might put up the worst goal differential in WC history with that group.

England and Germany have great chances to make it to the final whereas it will be hell of a battle between Holland, Italy, Brazil, Ivory Coast, and my Spaniards on the other half of the bracket.

And damn the French luck continues.

It's incredible that in that group alone, some of the top players in the World will be showcased.

Agreed.  I have no doubt that Germany and England will put their best efforts to take their respected groups in order to make it better for themselves.  If they do that, the chances for a finals match is certainly there.  As far as France is concerned, Mexico better keep improving or else they're going to get bounced.  The tri-color was a squad that was looking very much in disarray before the match with the USA.  If they revert, they're going to hand France it's chance to just waltz through.

With Toure brothers in the midfield and that freak Drogba up front, don't be surprised to see the Cote d'Ivoire get through that group.  Although Spain has a fairly easy group, they will be in tough shape with either Brazil or IC in second round.

The French are extremely athletic and if Ribery comes back to form they will be a solid dark horse (if you can really call any French team a dark horse).  They are a bad matchup for the Mexicans but if they things line up accordingly the Mexicans have a good matchup against crazy Maradona in 2nd round.

You think Landon Donovan might be more than a little happy about getting a shot a Becks?

I think it's fitting that North Korea rounds out the Group of Death.

Avoided France, Portugal and Cote d'Ivoire, which means avoided the GROUP OF DEATH!

You are making the bold assumption that Beckham is on the squad, let alone the playing 11.

Cake.  Walk.

And really, you all need to stop with the Group of Death stuff.   Good group?  Sure.  Above average?  Sure.   But my god, it's not like it's three traditional superpowers at the top of their game plus an Asian or African team.   I'm glad I'm not having to face Brazil, Ivory Coast, and Portugal in the first round, but Group of Death?  Really?

The simple point is that one of Brazil, Ivory Coast, and Portugal won't be making the second round.  If any one of those three were in a different group, they would be favo(u)red to advance.

There's always a Group of Death, and this is it.  Severe disappointment was drawn by the FIFA gods for one of these three very skillful teams.

Then that's just silly.

I mean, people are calling something something-that-it-ain't so they can make it sound more impressive than it is.

Like I said, above average group?  Yes, yes.   Group of Death?   C'mon.  Argentina, Brazil, and Italy in the same group in 1982.  THAT is a Group of Death.

You don't understand.  There HAS TO BE.  That's the way the narrative is written.

You can't go and change the formula just because you think it's a group of malaise rather than that of death.  This isn't Nam.  There are rules here.
