We lapsed into mediocre when I arrived in '77. I think we only beat the Stingarees once during my 4 years.
I think we were two-and-two with y'all when I was in school in the 80's.
One of the biggest scandals at our high school during my time happened in my junior year. For those not from the area, La Marque, Texas City, and Galveston Ball High used to all be in District 24-5A together, and there was a pretty big 3-way rivalry between the schools. Here's what I remember of the incident, keeping in mind that I started high school over 20 years ago and I've had a lot of tequila since then.
La Marque school staffers arrived on a Thursday morning to discover that a big TC had been plowed, as in with a Roto-Tiller, smack in the middle of their football field. Emergency meetings were called all over the place to figure out how to handle the kids, how to investigate what happened and who did it, blah blah blah. In Texas City, kids went cruising up and down Palmer Highway, the main drag in town, and the street on which our school and our stadium just happened to be located. La Marque is only 1/3 the size of Texas City, so many times, La Marque kids would come cruising in Texas City as well. Usually kids went cruising on Fridays and Saturdays, but not that year... our football players and their friends were out in force that Thursday night, on the watch for any La Marque kids, even though they'd been warned by coaches not to start anything or there'd be hell to pay.
Friday morning we got to school and learned the rest of the story. Kids talk, often to their detriment. It came out that the culprits were actually Ball High students who thought it'd be funny to start the chaos, then sit back and watch it. The morons couldn't resist bragging to their friends, and soon enough, school administration found out. The rumble between TC and LM was avoided, but for the rest of the time I was in school, LM and TC had a more friendly rivalry and we both hated Ball. I think both of our schools killed Ball High in football for the next few years. In fact, in my senior year, we had to play our homecoming game- against Ball High- in La Marque's stadium due to a chemical leak at one of the TC refineries. All the La Marque kids who came to the game sat on the TC side and rooted on the Stingarees- previously unheard of. We beat Ball High 20-0.
