Pirates seek trade for Oswalt
« on: June 30, 2009, 03:46:34 pm »
Why else would they have acquired Lastings Milledge?

In sum after a day of booty dealing:

Nyjer Morgan to the Nats.
Eric Hinske to the Yankees.

Milledge, Joel Hanrahan, Casey Erickson, and Eric Fryer to the Pirates.

I guess the key to that deal is the news for the Yankees that they probably lost Xavier Nady for the year to Tommy John surgery.  That the Pirates basically kept Hinske employed to use him in just this way is why the Yanks came calling.

They also gave the Yankees some money.

Here is the interesting part:

The Yankees got Xavier Nady last year from the Pirates for basically nothing.  Now this year, because Nady is out, the Pirates turn around and provide Hinske.  Plus they gave the Yankees money too.

Too funny.

I guess the Pirates are playing the role that the Kansas City A's used to do for the Yankees.

His contract was 1.5 million.  I think the Yankees should have been able to afford him.

Are these "prospects" any good, besides Milledge?

Yep, and the league is just as apathetic to it now...I hope Neal Huntington is at least skimming a percentage off for himself.  It's one thing to be the Yankees' whore, but to pay them for the privilege...ouch.

I guess the Pirates are playing the role that the Kansas City A's used to do for the Yankees.

Yeah, but the role has been updated.  The A's were monogamous.

Their GM seems to be obsessed with quantity over quality.  I think he thinks that if he can hoard as many players as possible, at least some of them will turn out decently.  Still don't understand why they're paying Hinske's salary though.

and the whole quantity thing can cause problems when you're up against 40-man roster rules.
