Nieve getting clock cleaned
« on: June 29, 2009, 07:18:07 pm »
After three nice starts for the Stem, so far tonight he's given up 10H and 3R in 3+ innings.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

It's because I just picked him up on my fantasy team.

And that's Joe Buck and who else? I guess I'm asking if there's anyone who knows anything about baseball who feels this way.

Pinwheel?

"anyone who knows anything about baseball" makes him ineligible for this game
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

Given Nieve's relative youth (~27), I was in no way supportive of the decision to cut him loose...especially with dead weight like Capellan collecting regular appearances down in Round Rock.

However, I don't lose any sleep over him pitching in NYC because the guy simply does not project any higher than a #4 starter from a long-term perspective.  If it was a matter of him having electric stuff, but us giving up on him because of command issues..that would be one thing.  However, the fact that the guy tops out around 91 and relies almost exclusively on a limited repertoire of off-speed pitches is something I can live without.

I think the situation is analogous to what we're seeing with a player like Matt Albers out in Baltimore.  Sure, it's a little disconcerting to see the guy blossom into a certifiable big-leaguer...but until he's promoted from middle-relief and starts winning 15+ games I'm not gonna be too frustrated.

Remember, too, that having him at RR was not an option ... he did not clear waivers.  And since he was not really ready at the start of the season (the Mets started him at Bingamton and then moved him up to Buffalo), there really was nothing the Astro's could have done to keep him.

I wish him well, but I agree with you that he probably is not going to be a dominant force at the big league level.  There is a slight chance he could end up as a late-inning reliever (or even closer), but that is true of a lot of almost-starter prospects.

^^^ Good call, Bob.  I had forgotten that he was out of options.
