UT down in order for the bottom of 1st.

We seem to have 3 threads going here.  Want to combine them?

Because the GZ is for teams that won't make the playoffs, not teams already in a national final.

Tigers lucky we've spotted them the first run.

This game's over.  Horns win.

It's the CWS.   None of that adult, mambypamby, Sallypants bullshit we have to put up with at the PROFESSIONAL baseball games.

Everyone takes their pants off and gets slobbery drunk for this game.

Stick around for the mid-inning promotions.   Everyone orgasms tonight during this game.

Nice to see: (a) Orel Hershiser seem like he cares about the game, and (b) a national announcer dare to intimate that preventing stolen bases lies with the pitcher more than the catcher.

Ok, new rule for the rest of the game (and series).

Everyone in here, from Alkie to Holly, must equip themselves with an adult beverage in a bottle.  I'm serious.

The drinking starts now (if you haven't already).   One post per inning is mandatory and each Mandatory Post must include baseball related innuendo.

Go.   Don't fuck this up.

Oh ok, so real quick NYC story; everyone can kiss my ass.

We're at this Mexican bar tonight grabbing a snack before the game tonight and of course ESPN is on.

The story comes on about Donald Fehr retiring and I, used to living outside the bubble, flip off the TV and announce "good riddance, you fuck."

From two tables behind me, Donald Fehr asks "fuck did I ever do to YOU?"

I gotta get used to this.  It's gonna take some time.

The bottom of the third inning disagrees with you. I'll try that in the bottom of the fourth.

He looked better in the third. But you should have seen his 2-0 two hit shutout of Arkansas back in May. Threw something like 91 pitches.

Every CWS Texas seems to hit more HRs in Rosenblatt than they do in the regular season, and every time the announcers seem awed by it.

The Hooks just gave up a grand slam and now trail 7-5. Castro looks very at ease behind the plate, very smooth. He's also swinging the bat great with a hit in every Hooks game thus far.

Castro looks very at ease behind the plate, very smooth. He's also swinging the bat great with a hit in every Hooks game thus far.

And just hit his first HR in AA (solo shot to right).

calling lusson a qb is about as relevant as calling augie a qb.  they have equal chances of ever seeing playing time.

I wonder if Augie is telling the lefty hitters "Be quick inside, he likes to bust the fastball in... don't give up on it because it has late movement... be quick".

Ott has that late movement and can make it move late either darting outside or back over the plate.  What he looks like to me is a pitcher who make hitters swing.  Augie must of told his guys to make him come after you.  Every thing is corner black with this kid.

You gotta make Ott work for his strikes, don't swing at his pitches until you absolutely have to.  Make him come to you.  That late movement makes his pitch look like a strike, but it's not.  Make him work, you can beat him if you do.

BTW - I think a lefty hitter can hurt Ott better than a right hander.

Wood's inexplicable FB to Mitchell in the 6th and Workman's even more inexplicable off-speed CB in the 11th were the ball game. Jungman could not handle the pressure of pitching with a man on. i was trying to tell Augie to get Wood out in the 9th after he retired Mitchell, but he did not listen.

Indeed.  It would have been inappropriate for these Horns to win without going down 1-0 first.

Oh, and props to Orel Hershiser and Robin Ventura for, you know, actually giving a damn and commenting on the actual game going on.

I agree with Jim on all scores. The pitcher in me knew that Wood had made a mistake to Mitchell. I didn't think that the pitch to Mahtook was poorly executed. I think that the freshman just showed some patience and poise, which he hadn't shown at the plate earlier in the game by swinging for the downs every time.

whatever his name is had NO chance at hitting the FB. throwing an off-speed pitch violated a cardinal principle of Pitching 101: never throw off-speed to a slow bat. if he had thrown a hard curve in the dirt like he did in the 10th, ok, but he threw an off-speed hanger, and your hitter had been sitting on off-speed the entire AB. that said, we could have played 30 innings without scoring again. our defensive replacements cannot hit a lick.

In spite of all the good things that Wood has done, I usually have a feeling of impending disaster when he enters the game.

I disagree with Mr. Happy on the Workman pitch to Mahtook: Mahtook did a good job recognizing it, but that pitch started inside and broke right into the happy zone. If Workman is going to throw a breaking pitch there (and I agree with most everybody else that he should have been going with a high fastball instead), it needs to be a slider that starts in the middle and breaks out of the zone.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

In spite of all the good things that Wood has done, I usually have a feeling of impending disaster when he enters the game.

he was sitting off-speed. he was hitting flat-footed trying to foul off FBs just praying for off-speed. even Orel saw that. a slider was a very bad idea, and the execution was even worse. sometimes you can outsmart yourself.

I can't fault Augie for pulling Keyes in the 9th because he's flat out bad in the outfield, but it really hurts the lineup.  Probably shouldn't have pulled both Keyes and Moldenhauer, though.
Crazy Joe McCluskey was fucking nuts.  It's why they called him Crazy Joe.

slave to platooning when he removed Moldenhauer as DH. bad idea. i agreed with the defensive changes.

Especially seeing as the Moldenhauer we've been waiting for all year had finally arrived.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

As is the custom of the CWS Final, the home team gets to play in the weather of their home park.

Last night, 107 heat index on the field, just like Austin in September (were you at the Stanford football game?  I was.  For one quarter.   Then I realized the game was on TV in my a/c'd dorm room).   Tonight, it's Baton Rouge in monsoon season.

They said it'll be at least an hour and fifteen minutes.
