Palm Pre...iPhone Killer
« on: June 15, 2009, 02:34:27 pm »
For about 4 hours, then the battery dies.  Don't know what happens if you start running one of the 18 apps, but I can't imagine it gets better.  Still, at least you have a slide-form phone that is so sharp when it's opened that it can be used to cut cheese.

Limey hasn't ever needed a phone to cut the cheese for him anyway. But there's an app for it just in case.

Wow, that sucks.  Still, it's doubtful that everyone is having the battery life problem.  The Internet tends to amplify whiners and fanboys and shut out normal users.

There is a guy at our office using the Pre, and this is not an issue.  Odd.

I actually have skimmed the whole thread. A lot of the problems were fixed with just letting the battery drain all the way then fully recharging.

Some of the other problems look like software issues and/or the network connection getting too much juice. Sounds like an OS error.

I just thought it was funny because this exact same thing happened to the iPhone, and it's never been able to shake the "crappy battery life" stink ever since launch.  The Pre is lucky because it's had much less fanfare, so teething troubles are not so well published.  Also, it doesn't have AT&T sucking the sweat off dead men's balls as a carrier.

After doing some more reading (my office is planning on demoing a Pre soon), looks like the overriding problem is that the Hotmail sync software refuses to hold any setting other than "constantly stay connected and suck battery life as fast as possible".

Brilliant!

The iPhone has a "crappy battery life" reputation because it has crappy battery life.

My iPhone's battery life is comparable to my old cell phone which was never very good either. I think however, my past phone, tempered my expectations of the new phone. I'm more disappointed with how slow the 3G connection is compared to wireless broadband connections.

Nope.  It was incorrectly compared to Razrs and the like, when it needed to be compared to smartphones, where it's battery life holds up very well in comparison.  Always did.  I've never had an issue with battery life, and I use my iPhone very heavily.

I have both an iPhone and a BlackBerry.  They are not in the same universe as far as battery life goes.  On a good day, the iPhone battery last maybe 6-8 hours.  In other words, I can take it off the charger when I leave for work and it still have some life when I leave.  On a bad day(a), the BB is good for 24-36 hours.  They are not comparable.  Not even a little.  Now, that doesn't mean I don't love the iPhone, but the battery life simply sucks.  That's just the reality.

I've never had a cell phone that I had to charge more often than about every 3 or 4 days.  I have to charge my iPhone at least every day, several times a day if I use it heavily.

Depends what you do.  I have a corporate BB, and it'll run for days on one charge.  But all it's doing is receiving data in bursts, with me sending the odd reply.  My iPhone is used for phone calls, texting, email, internet, checking the weather, games, following the Astros, listening to music, posting on Facebook, IMing, keeping my calendar, Google maps, taking notes, using the calculator, searching for music with Shazam, taking and viewing photos...

Shortly after I first got the iPhone, I went on a trip to NYC.  Left the house at about 6am with a full charge.  Listened to music on the way to the airport and made a couple of calls via Bluetooth.  Made a couple more calls at the airport in between more music, and sent some emails.  Boarded the plane and (after takeoff) watched a movie on the iPhone.  More calls, emails and music at the other end, before heading to my first meeting.  Continued the emails during the day.  Used Google Maps to get from appointment to appointment.  Occasional calls.  Met some folks for dinner, but when walking to the restaurant, noticed that there was a massive plume of steam erupting from Lexington Avenue.  Used the 'net to find out it was a burst pipe and not al Queda.  Took some photos and emailed them to people.  Had dinner and drinks and more drinks.  Got back to the hotel after midnight (after a trip to the 24/7 Apple Store where I saw Robin Williams).  iPhone still hadn't hit the 20% red line.

Do you have the Storm?  I'm thinking about moving to the smart phone world and wondering if it's a good alternative.

If you use your BB that much, you'd get about 2-3 hours out of an iPhone.

My battery life seems to be erratic. Sometimes I'll have the same kind of experience that you posted. Other times it seems like I spend 20 minutes doing a crossword puzzle and my meter goes from full to half.

I'm going to need another charger for my iphone.  I usually just charge at night, but pretty soon I'll be able to watch baseball at work.  I have a feeling that might drain the battery a bit.

Streaming audio / video will slaughter your battery.  Best get another charger.

If I play Solitaire, the battery is fine.  If I play Hold 'Em or FieldRunners, it goes pretty quick.  This is my point about battery life - if you're using it more, especially something that is pushing the processor - it'll drain faster.  If I just left it on the side and checked email when not at my desk, it'd last for a couple of days.

Isn't it only available through T-Mobile?

Hmm.

The Google phone:

http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/Cell-Phone-Detail.aspx?cell-phone=T-Mobile-G1-with-Google-White

Is $149, has a QWERTY keyboard, I hate typing on iPhones.  And the applications are free.  T-Mobile or AT&T?  Which is the lesser of two evils?
