WWDC
« on: June 08, 2009, 09:09:01 am »
Should be a good day for all reasonable* Mac-freaks.  New iPhone and details of when the 3.0 software will be available (free download for all existing iPhone users).  3.0 has a lot of nice features, including the much whined about cut, copy, paste function, and landscape view/keyboard in the Mail app.  There are credible rumours of a swath of new iPhones, starting with cheap, low-end models sporting limited capacity and functionality, right up to the new 32GB top end model with 7.2gbs 3G connectivity, a faster chip and video shooting, editing and uploading.

Stick that in your Palm Pre!

* Unreasonable Mac-freaks, of which there are many, will decry the lack of a teleport app and that the headphone jack hole is still too big for their penis to touch the sides.

Noon CDT.  Phil Schiller (couldn't be more aptly named) will give the keynote address - and the whole world will be shocked if Jobs doesn't make a "surprise" appearance as he's due to resume his role at Apple later this month and is a massive publicity hound.

Forgot to add that the new iPhone is expected to include a magnetometer, which means it has a built-in compass.  This can be utilised in concert with the GPS, for example, to tell you you're going the wrong way and also to tell you the address of the building you're looking at.  It may also detect certain types of X-Men.

I am stepping in to Apple world.  Waiting on my order of a i-Mac & i-Touch any day now.  They currently have a deal if you are a student (which my wife is) that the i-touch is free with rebate with purchase of a mac.
Always ready to go to a game.

You can also get the student version of Office for Mac for about $150.  It's exactly the same as the full version, except cheaper.  Files are 100% cross compatible with Office for Windows files - no conversion necessary.

The iPod Touch already has the faster processor that is expected to go into the iPhone, but they charge iPod Touch owners for software updates, so you may want to wait until after the 3.0 update go live to buy your Touch.  Also, the Touch should get a boost to 64GB, which will be useful if you plan on putting a lot of movies on there, or have an insane music library.  iMacs are not expected to be updated at all right now.  Notebooks are expected to get some tweaks though, including built-in 3G wireless.

Is there an app to get them to shape-shift back to Rebecca Romijn?

Forgot to mention.  There's the latest version of the MAC OS X ("Snow Leopard") operating system coming out at some point.  You may want to wait for that before buying your iMac.

A caveat about the compatibility-the newest version of Mac Office does not support Visual Basic Macros, which are a horrible security nightmare.  Unfortunately, they are still in use in many corporate environments.  Check your Excel spreadsheets before going Mac!  It can save you a big headache down the road!

I have this problem too.  What's worse is that the Windows machines I have access to, have rigid security requirements and won't run them either.  I ended up just rewriting the macros in C++.  I imagine if you are not in a quantitative field, this is not so much an issue.

I've heard rumblings on here that a Mac runs Windows office just as well as a PC.  Is that true and, if so, how?  I've always been a mac guy growing up but was forced into the PC world once I graduated from college.  My firm is gearing up for a switch to office 2007 that will render all my excel skillz basically useless and have to be relearnt anyhow, so I'm considering going back to Mac for my personal computer.

I have Office 2008 on my iMac.  It works great but, as this is at home, I don't do nearly the same difficulty of stuff as I do at work.  I have opened files created at work, edited them and then re-emailed them back to myself without any problems.

To save investing in new Office software, you can always get one of the virtual solutions for Windows on a Mac - either VM or Parallels.  BOth will let you clone your PC onto your Mac, so you have all your old files and software, and you can run them in a separate window right on the Mac desktop.  You can drag and drop files between the two environments too.  It's a very nice safety net for the conversion to Mac.  I never use my Windows virtual machine anymore.

They demoed Sonw Leopard, which has some nice new features and a bunch of "under the hood" stuff that's over my head.  $29 upgrade for Leopard users, available in September.

Since then, they've been boring the arse off people going over the same iPhone 3.0 OS stuff they did three months ago.  Looks like AT&T is a big impediment to the MMS capability and tethering, all of which could be done with the new OS but AT&T won't allow it.  Fuckers.

Tom Tom app coming to the iPhone, because they're now allowing turn-by-turn navigation.

Dangit. My husband's contract with Alltel/Verizon was due to expire in July, and his phone just died, so he got a replacement (for free) with a 2-year contract extension with Verizon. Wish this had been announced earlier, because he'd have been just fine with the 8GB model and a switch to AT&T. Fooey.

You can return it for a full refund up to 30 days.

I don't know why people get so freaked out at Apple about this stuff.  It's not like technology elsewhere doesn't get cheaper and faster all the time.

What if a bought a Blu Ray player a year ago?

What if I just want the $100 difference?  I got it at Best Buy, but they *did* tell me I had 30 days to return it.  I don't want to return it, I just want the new price.  Although the longer life battery would be nice, battery life on the iPhone blows unbelievable chunks.

Battery life on all 3G phones blows chunks.  If you got a 16GB 3G, you can return it and get a 32GB 3GS for the same price, or get a 16GB 3GS and $100 back.  To me, that would be a no brainer.

One of the great things about the iPhone is that, if you back up your old one to your computer before you take it back, when you sync your new one, it'll put all your old stuff onto it.  Addresses, phone numbers, apps, Notes, text messages, the works.  Makes changing one for another very, very easy.

Best Buy's real good at taking care of you if their price drops sometime in the 30 day period.  I bought my Playstation 3 from them back in February, then the next week they advertised a free game & wireless guitar for the music games free with purchase.  I just took in my receipt and I walked out with a free game and guitar.

Using it now and, yes, it is faster.  Not sure I need that wall of internet that comes up when you open a new tab, but I'm sure I can turn it off somewhere.

Oh, and in case anyone's interested, you can pre-order the new iPhone 3GS at Apple's website.  You can opt either for delivery to home on on Juneteenth, or pick up at a local Apple Store.

Diggin' Safari, so fari. You can choose what you want to open with a new tab, including nothing. I have gotten very used to Firefox using the noscript add-on. It has saved my ass more than a few times so I doubt I'll move away from it but Safari is speedy and pretty.

You can pre-order it at an A&T store, as well, and (I think) on AT&T's website.

Oh, I have AT&T, and they suck.  Mostly because they threw the 2G iPhone users under a bus for the benefit of 3G iPhone users.  Now that I'm becoming a 3G(s) owner, hopefully it won't be so bad.  But AT&T will still suck (just as Sprint and Verizon and everyone else sucks...okay,maybe a little more).

Question about Snow Leopard... I'm looking to buy a cheap Mac - a Mini, perhaps - to test OS X's interoperability with our Windows network.  We are looking into the possibility of deploying a couple Macs to serve specialized roles.  If I buy a Mac now, will I get Snow Leopard for free when it comes out?  Does the same hold true if I am lucky enough to snag a refurb Mini on Apple's web site?

We have an eMac now, but it's got a PowerPC CPU, it's slow, and the screen is burned in.  One of the things I want to work with extensively is VirtualBox, which only runs on Intel Macs.

Snow Leopard only works on Intel Macs too.  Check the Apple website, but I don't think they're offering free upgrades to SL with new Macs yet.  Good news is, the upgrade when it comes in September (allegedly), will be only $29.  A Mac Mini will probably work for your purposes, as I presume you have screens and keyboards to use it with, but if you're going to run a virtual machine, you'll probably want to boost the RAM.

Ok, the upgrade costs $10 for Macs bought after June 8.

Speaking of $10 upgrades, is iPhone 3.0 worth getting for my iPod Touch?  I know it has copy/paste and stuff, but is that alone worth $10?

Global search is nice, as is the horizontal keyboard for mail and messages. Safari is zippier. I don't know if that's enough for a Touch user, though.

They all blow.  What AT&T did, when they rolled out their 3G network, was put that on their main frequency - the one they upgraded to because the signal would actually pass through tissue paper - and put the 2G network on the old frequency - that wouldn't.  So, suddenly, after a year of ok service on my old iPhone, it became worthless inside anything more structural than a cardboard box.

Fuck AT&T.

I'm glad that they took down those stupid "we even provide service in Tokyofrankadelphia" ads.

How about focusing on providing reliable service in a place that actually exists, like Houston Fucking Texas?

The Katy Freeway is a dropped call every two miles.

So it's not just my phone. Wow. When I actually complete a cell call here in Houston I feel triumphant.

Guess how many dropped calls I have ever experienced on the cell network I use in a third-world country? That's right. None.

You know, I've had Cingular/AT&T for near on 10 years now, and I've never once had a dropped call.  I get service out in BFE where no other carrier comes close.  In fact, the reliability of the coverage is the only reason I've kept them as long as I have.

I loved AT&T compared to the T-Mobile shit service I have now with the work BB.  Service drops about 5 minutes outside of Houston to all parts north and west.

I didn't even know T-Mobile was still in business.  They suck ass the worst.  Followed closely by Sprint then Verizon.

I have Sprint (and a plain ol' phone).  The only place it drops a call is when I go to my best friends.  But she lives by San Antonio so who knows what the problem is.

I'm limited on the effectiveness of my complaints because I don't pay for the phone.  But I bitched about it anyway after the change, and was told, "T-Mobile is the number 1 carrier in Europe" as if that was somehow fixing my problem in Houston, Texas, USA.

AT&T is a land-line compared to T-Mobile.

At the end of it, they're all land lines.  Many people mistakenly think that their cell phone call simply bounces from one tower to the next.  It's a cell signal until it hits the nearest tower then it becomes a land line call.  The cell carrier is really only as good as their land lines.  Which outside of AT&T, suck ass.

Mas Movil. (Te da MAS!)

When I was in NYC I had Sprint and I do not remember any problems with the service at all. I also had a clunky, old-school phone that worked great and was intuitive and so on.
