Sean Berry diagnosed with kidney cancer
« on: May 06, 2009, 04:50:31 pm »
Will have surgery later this week.

As reported on 1560, seeking link now.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

That is awful.  Prayers and best wishes to him and his family!

How awful.  Best of luck, Sean.

And moving on to mundane and comparitively meaningless issues, it seemed to me (based on nothing beyond reading too much in to out-of-context quotes) that Berry was one of the only folks on the staff that was talking sense to the players and fighting through the Cooperisms, so an extended departure to recover sucks for that reason too.

There are so many varieties and manifestations. Hopefully they caught it in time and can take care of it easily.

Thoughts and prayers to him.

Another person to add to your thoughts and prayers in the Astros org.- long time pitching coach in Lexington, Charley Taylor had surgery earlier this spring to remove his prostate and cancerous bladder.  He is hoping to be able to visit the team in early June.
Always ready to go to a game.

Everyone I know is or has delt with cancer in some form, be it family or friends.  I lost my mom to breast cancer in 2000, she was 53.  Cancer don't care.  My thoughts and prayers are with the Berry family and the Astros organization.  Early detection is the best way to fight it and hopefully Sean has a leg up on it.  Guys and gals, please have your self checked early and often.  We want you here and so does your family.

So who is working with the pitchers in Lex? This is where alot of the best pitching talent is in the organization. Prayers and good thoughts to Taylor.

Amazing story from Footer on how this was detected.  Apparently Dave Clark organized BP for the coaches in Atlanta, and the swinging caused Berry some discomfort, and eventually, bleeding tht led him to get this checked out.

ETA: I missed that this was an update of the original link.

Travis Driskill was scheduled to be the pitching coach in G'ville this year.  So instead of hanging out in Extended spring, he is in Lex working with the staff.  He worked with all the starters except Bono last year in G'ville.

Footers discusses prognosis, treatment, etc. in her blog (LINK).

If there is a silver lining to Sean's condition, it's that this cancer is extremely treatable and should be 100 percent gone once the tumor is removed. He might even be able to do it laproscopically, which would require just a short recovery time.

That is the silver lining.  Hopefully they get it out, and it doesn't recur.

Footer Twitter,

It appears Berry will have the entire kidney removed rather than just the tumor.

That would be strange, Edge, Larry, and Adam, without Bono. I wonder who sang?

Berry's cancerous right kidney was removed via laproscope, leaving a two-inch abdominal incision. Doctors indicated that there will not be a need for follow-up cancer treatments.

Berry will remain hospitalized for three to four days and could return to his full coaching duties in approximately two weeks.

I'm trying to get my head around this. A friend of mine recently had his appendix removed and he has a six-inch scar that's pretty damn gory.
