Carlos Zambrano landed on the disabled list Monday after straining his hamstring Sunday bunting for a hit? Will he miss more than two starts? And will his pitching be impacted when he returns?

If the answer to only one of those three questions is yes, the Cubs will have skated after a dangerous situation, one that in a tight playoff race – which it appears they will be in this season, either with St. Louis for the division title or in the wild-card crowd – could have lasting implications. A Zambrano injury running the bases is not one of the worries they should have.

Every time a pitcher takes the field, he’s an accident waiting to happen. The risks inherent in pitching are huge. It’s silly to increase those risks to increase the ones that hitters and baserunners face, especially when so much of a team’s payroll and its hope for success is tied into the arms of those pitchers.

Let’s add the designated hitter rule to the NL, giving Major League Baseball the standard set of rules that exists in the NFL, NBA and NHL.

Hey, I've got a different idea for producing a standard set of rules, pretty much the same way the NBA and NHL do it: if you're in the fucking game, you play both offense and defense. If your specialization in one aspect of the game is such that it creates a liability in the other aspect, well, tough shit, deal with the tradeoffs. And if your tub-of-goo pitcher is too fucking out of shape to run down to first base without popping a hammy, maybe there are some other issues that ought to be addressed.

Not I, for what it's worth.  The longer you play baseball, the more you realize you'll have long stretches where nothing is working.  The key is to not lose confidence that you can do what you've done before over and over again.  That he's striking out to me means he's trying hard to get his knocks so he's going down swinging.  In my estimation, he'll be fine.

I got there early to see this.  Both runners were going on the pitch and it looked like Kaz was slow to get the ball to Tejada.  By the time Miggs got it, he was flat-footed on the bag and about to get ploughed by the runner.  He had no option but to throw, because the runner from 2nd was going to score if they didn't turn two.  The throwing error was moot, IMHO.  The true error was the tortuously slow turn at 2nd.

FTR, I stayed for the whole of the main event, and was rewarded with the beat down of the Gnats clearly horrendous bullpen.
