Matsui grounds out 6-3
Pence taps it towards 3rd, thrown out by Pineiro
Berkman faces the shift and grounds it to Greene up the middle

3 quick outs for Pineiro

I am trying to run JD & Brownie's audio from MLBTV through the stereo while watching the Cardinals HD feed to resolve the announcer / picture quality dilemma.  I think the timing is too far off to make it work.

I really thought he lost it and it was gonna drop.  Thank goodness he recovered and made the out.

Schumaker grounds one to a diving Blum, but it gets under his glove for a single.  Blum dove a little too much the ball hit the bottom of his glove.
Greene is called out on strikes.
Pujols pops up to Bourn in shallow CF.
Ludwick works a walk.
Runners at 1st and 2nd for Duncan who singles to LF. Pence's throw is late. Schumaker scores. Ludwick to 3rd.
Molina walks.
Bases juiced for Ankiel. He swings at one in the dirt. Pudge steps on the plate for the out.

The ump is really squeezing Hampton.  Not calling the strikes on the corners.

I saw it. Twas a thing of beauty. A key play was a fuckup by Piniella by not replacing Soriano in LF for defensive purposes.

Brownie - Tejada had a real problem grounding in to double plays last year.

JD - No he didn't! He was quite good at it. Almost set a record!

Lee singles to RF.
Tejada flies out to RF.
Lee takes off to steal 2nd, but it is ball four and Blum walks.
Pudge lines one to Pooholes who then steps on first for the DP.

Hampton gets'em 1-2-3 with ground ball outs.

Sorry I was on the phone.

Is anyone needing PBP?

Would you rather have an inning summary or a batter by batter update?

Pitch by pitch isn't necessary, but it'd be great if y'all could do it batter to batter.

Hampton made a very serious fielding error. You can't lob like that if you're not going to really look the runner back.

Runners stay at 2nd and 3rd.

Molina bounces to Hampton who sorta looks Pooholes back, Hampton carelessly lobs the ball to first to get Molina, Pooholes sprints home and scores.

Ankiel grounds out 3-1.

Molina bounces to Hampton who looks Pooholes back, Hampton carelessly lobs the ball, Pooholes sprints home and scores.

Ankiel grounds out 3-1.

Calling it a sprint is being a bit misleading. It was a stop, start, stop, start, then sprint.

Which tells you how fucking miserable the lob was.

Sorry.  Thought it was inferred that when Hampton looked him back he stopped, then sprinted when Mike turned to lob it to Berkman.

There's no whining in baseball. We're losing this game due to Hampton's failure to field his position and the HPU.

Blum shoulda scored

Bullshit. He would have been out on a good throw. Three run lead and a PH up next. Good call by Clark.

Bourn at 1st, Blum at 3rd for Erstad.

Filo,

This has been tried ad nausea before in here and many of those folks left on their own accord because they did not try to fit in when others tried to help.  Don't try it, you're going to lose.  The best thing I can do for you is go ahead and pull the eject seat button for you if you'd like.  Your call.  If you don't, then I suggest a read more, post nothing for a month so you can learn.

Your call.

Hey Noe, I asked a question earlier that was deferred to you.  Can you find it and answer it?

Thanks,

Why does it seem like the astros are free swingers and most of the rest of the league are patient hitters?

Ryan stays in to play 2B.  Schumaker goes to LF.  Barden comes in for Freese at 3B.

Hope I got all that correct.

Berkman pops a fly to CF.  1 out.

So it is your contention that, up and down the entire organization, the team doesn't teach that getting on base is a high priority?

The Astros are not down with OBP.

Orv Franchuk is the minor league hitting co-ordinator of Major League Baseball's Houston Astros

Here’s his philosophy, developed in 8 years with the A’s and 4 with the Red Sox

"If they get the pitch they're looking for, they are going to put a good swing on it and if they do not get the pitch, they will remain selective and try to wait for it. And with two strikes, …it is time to bear down. Expand the strike zone some but do not concede the at-bat. …"

"The situation determines what they have to do, whether it is get on base, knock in runners or move them along. That is the plan. …When players first start with us, it's almost like they think the philosophy means you need to take pitches and you need to walk,'' …that is just a byproduct of our system. … the whole thing boils down to the batter being aggressive and the batter getting on base."

In all seriousness, is there someone on the coaching staff or the team that pulls him aside and explains what horrible fucking ABs he had today?  I mean, does someone make him watch the tape of that bases-loaded strike-out?  Or does Coop just pat him on the back and say "nice aggressive approach there kid"?

I had a very long talk with Andyzipp about this at Opening Day.  I don't know of any inside information of anyone pulling the kid aside and talking to him so I asked Zipp if he knew.  Answer was the same, no one is saying that the kid is learning from anyone anything.  Doesn't mean someone may not be trying, it means it is not well known.  Last year, some one had the bright idea of teaming Pence up with Erstad to learn a little bit, but Pence ultimately did whatever he wanted to.  DVaughtrin and I had a similar discussion later that night and all I could offer is this: He is what Cooper ultimately wants him to be.

Period.

I don't care who is the batting coach or who the teammate might be who is trying to counsel the young man, if Cooper comes up to Pence and either says nothing or explicitly condones bad baseball acumen on the kid's side, then nothing is going to change.  Here is the rub: last year, the media, the fans and even Cooper himself got really ansty with Michael Bourn because in most if not all situations where Bourn could've helped the club with solid ABs (and I mean a good, knowledgeable approach to hitting with men on the pillows), he failed.  By failure, Bourn's inability to change his approach to hitting the ball caused many strikeouts and a lot of pulling the baseball, most of which went for harmless grounders to the second baseman.  So Cooper eventually made the young man ride the pine.  So last year, when the Astros needed a good AB with runners on and two outs (even one out), the last guy anybody wanted to see hit was Michael Bourn.

So why is Pence given a free ride this year when he's doing eggszactly the same thing: giving up ABs in critical situations?  If Cooper is to be believed by his team, he will enact some sort of measure to get to Pence, including give him a day or two on the pine and let Erstad hit against tough right handed pitchers.  Erstad in the two hole hitting in that key situation is critical.  Pence right now elicits no confidence what so ever that he's going to get the job done or at minimum give a solid AB trying.

None.

Right, again it has nothing to do with scarcity of resources (aka talent), economics, good pitching, or the fact that the guys in the other dugout went to the same school...if we just "teach" it we will win every time.  It is so simple, why hasn't anybody figured this out yet.

Second pitch. Took the first for a ball.

I went and checked the GameDay and in the seventh, Pence came up with bases loaded, two outs and *two men* had walked before his very eyes.  So he takes the first pitch for a ball.  That's good.  And then he proceeds to strikeout in three freaking pitches.

Three.

Last one, according to GameDay was a breaking pitch.  How did I know that it was going to be a breaking pitch?  Hey Hunter, that is freaking Lance Berkman on deck... if you spit on some pitches, they might... I mean... MIGHT... walk you!  (see: Matsui and Erstad right before you!).  Imagine that, Hunter Pence, free swinger, hitting in front of Lance Berkman.

Who is the brilliant person who came up with *THAT* idea!?!?

IIRC, he was selective but aggressive and good enough with the bat that he didn't have to rely on working a count to get his pitch to hit. Walks were secondary.

Does the relationship of Cooper and Pence really blind people, especially when you think that Cooper showed just the opposite in terms of handling Michael Bourn last year?  If Coop wants to help Pence, put him at six,  let him free swing his way right into oblivion and be done with it.  That will end Pence's career as a starter for the Astros or end Coop's tenure as skipper (one will happen before the other).

But Cooper won't do something that logical.

Noe, why is it that people who are naturally gifted and successful at something so often have a difficult time teaching that ability to others?

IIRC, he was selective but aggressive and good enough with the bat that he didn't have to rely on working a count to get his pitch to hit. Walks were secondary.

*DING, DING, DING*

Coop knew his strikezone and was very aggressive.  He sees Pence as he saw himself, except that Pence is not one who knows his strikezone.  In fact, he has a nose to toes strikezone and if you're going to have such a zone, you better be Vlad Guerrero or Manny Mota or even Jesus Alou for goodnessake and make them pay.

Pence, for his history in the minors was a K machine and as you get into higher levels of baseball, if you're a free swinger and have high k rates, you are going to struggle because the pitching is better, the pitchers do develop a book on you and it will continue to get uglier and uglier.  I don't care how much Cooper might see himself in Pence, he doesn't understand the one nuance is that Pence doesn't have Cooper's acumen for baseball (re: Baseball IQ).  Grip it and rip it is not Baseball IQ.

Right, again it has nothing to do with scarcity of resources (aka talent), economics, good pitching, or the fact that the guys in the other dugout went to the same school...if we just "teach" it we will win every time.  It is so simple, why hasn't anybody figured this out yet.

Not to be taken as agreeing with F, but I do think one of the more frustrating aspects of this young season is that the Astros have not been so much outmatched in talent as wasteful of opportunities.

How is it that it seems to slips peoples' mind that the primary problem with bringing up Pence in 2007 was that he had not learned how to manage an at bat?  Why does this even have to be argued?  We're staring right at the evidence.

Noe, why is it that people who are naturally gifted and successful at something so often have a difficult time teaching that ability to others?

Ah yes, the old Splendid Splinter syndrome of managing.  They (the gifted and talented *AND* successful) are not aware of how much they were gifted for one and secondarily, how much real Baseball IQ they really had.  In football, they say a really good quarterback is someone who can slow the game down, meaning they just have that natural ability to anticipate and react before the play unfolds before them.  That is acumen.  That is sports IQ.

That is hard to teach.

Pence has talent.  Gobs of it.  So do a ton of others in AAA who will never get the chance Pence has now.  What happens this year will prove out to either be his fall from grace (see: Hidalgo, Richard) or his rise above it because he was able to finally *get it*.  What Cooper seems to be doing (and it's waaaay early I know, but I am just sensing some things right now between the two) is giving Pence a fighting chance to string some good play for himself and build confidence because confidence is a huge part of then acquiring acumen.  But the opposite can happen too, and that is with every passing failure comes doubt and doubt will cloud the issue and preclude taking him out to the batting tee and doing some situational work with him.

Some of that will come around. There are lots of possible reasons, and Pence / Bourn not coming through doesn't account for all the missed opportunities. Kabong will hit, and Pudge should be ok as well. Some of these things just happen, and sometimes mistakes lead to learning. We'll just have to wait and hope for the best.

Absolutely!  When it was whispered "loudly" by the baseball people that the kid was *NOT* ready (he had no AAA experience at all, so he got at least two months of it and then he spent one month injured in the majors so he had a small season in the majors where he did well, but the book was not developed on him yet... hence why he struggled last year).  There is a saying: the majors is the worse place to learn how to play baseball.

Cooper is doing what he can to make this kid one of the cogs but another old saying in baseball is "the ball will find you".  Meaning key situations always seem to be exposure for your weakest hitter or fielder.  Right now, and I'm not kidding, I'd rather see Darin Erstad play or even Jason Michaels.  Pence has now been exposed for two winnable games maybe three.  If this continues, he better show improvement that is heads above what he's showing now and if he does, one will wonder why he is showing he has no clue right now.

JR Towles went the opposite way quicker than Bourn and now Pence.  The thing with Towles is that he went from sky high September to clueless April/May in a nano-second.  I hope and really do pray that Pence is no flash in the pan because he has solid talent (and believe me, so does Towles), but right now, he's lost.  Towles showed everyone last year how when a youngun gets lost, it can be very hard to find themselves again.

Will Pence be okay?  We're all going to see in the coming two months.

Yes, but his diagnosis is lack of organizational priority and flawed minor league coaching.  There are only 2 starting offensive players that came out of the Astros farm system (on opposite ends of the approach spectrum no less)...everybody else learned how to hit somewhere else so it can't really be the minor league coaching that is the problem.

Concluding that there is some organization wide deficiency 4 games into the season is garbage and belongs in a Chron blog comment or AD, not here.

Agreed.

If you want an example of organizational philosophy and player development, I can tell you about two guys in particular:

1. Morgan Ensberg
2. Tim Redding

Ensberg had a great idea while being a cleanup hitter... "I'll take a walk!" so he saw a ton of pitches.  This he developed over time but as he progressed to the majors, guess what happened?  Well, pitchers at this level have a keen ability to put a ball right on the black consistently.  What looked like a ball in the minors because the accuracy wasn't as keen down there, became a strike up in the majors.  So as you progress and as you learn what role in the lineup you're supposed to have, you adjust.  We keep saying this over and over again and it bears repeating over and over again: baseball is about adjustment at the major league level.  So Ensberg over time continued to try and employ his patient OBP game at the cleanup spot and he started to get hurt quite a bit as a hitter.  So much so, he eventually convinced himself he was a two hole or even leadoff guy.  And now, he's basically out of a job.  So just because you learn patience, that does not translate into success.  What the Astros hitters in the minors are taught is eggszactly what pravata provided and it is conducive to being a solid major league hitter and not go the way of Morgan Ensberg, who eventually became known around here as "Pigeon Shit".  That was because he would not swing the bat any more and he may as well be a statue if he was going to do that.

Redding was also learning from the organizational philosophy of tight Pitches per Innings ratios.  But Redding had a huge problem with the organizational philosophy and decided he was going to do it his way: High K rates.  And he opened the eyes of the stats people who monitor minor league performance that way (and really, this is a really bad idea to begin with, stats in lower minor leagues are meaningless in a way).  What stats the Astros look for in the lower minor leagues is PPI and other things.  Basically, teach kids to be in and around the strikezone, no fear throwing strikes, use your fielders.  Things that Redding did not want to follow.  So at a given time, Redding was annointed by many as the kid who was going to be greater than any of the Astros prospect pitchers because he had ungodly K rates in the minors.  Neyer even said he was going to be greater than Oswalt, who was learning how to manage innings under Hooton and Maddux before he came up to the majors.  Redding came up alright and proceeded to throw four seamers the way he wanted to pitch and instead of strikeouts, he was shocked that major leaguers spoiled those pitches and basically just waited the kid out until he threw a fatter pitch.

Redding struggled.  Ensberg had success and then struggled.  Redding has learned his lesson and has taught himself how to be a pitcher now, basically going back to the Dewey Robinson/Vern Ruhle pitching bible.  Ensberg is probably somewhere in the Rays minor leagues trying to prove he can be aggressive and patient at the same time.

So sometimes it's the player.  You can lead a horse to water, but...

Agreed.  To be clear, I do not know enough to make any sort of semi-educated statement about the astros organizational approach.  I just think that the Astros have lost games they could have won.  The Astros do not appear to be over-matched talent wise (encouraging sign), but they also don't have a preponderance of talent that they can afford hurting themselves with poor decision making (see Hampton, Mike and Pence, Spaz).

Vin Scully (crowd shot of dorky teenage kid wearing a manny wig): "Very becoming.  I wonder if anyone ever asked him, seriously, manny, why did you let your hair do that?  It's a legitimate question.  See if I can build up enough nerve next time I see him."

Statistically Improbable.  If he's standing in that batter's box, its really hard to throw him a ball, just ask Josh Kinney.

The truth is a player should have developed these skills in either youth ball or at worst high school/college.    Anyone who thinks not one coach in Pence's life has tried to hammer home situations and plate discipline is either very dumb or incredibly naive.

It's on Pence to watch the video and make the damn adjustment.      It's not that hard to understand if a guy has walked a guy or more in front of you to take a damn pitch or two before swinging, especially in close, late game situations.   Monday, two guys get on in front of him and nobody is out in a 3-0 game in the 7th inning.    Heilman comes in to face Pence, and on the very first pitch the reliever throws he swings and grounds into a double play.   Unless it's an absolute meatball, he should have been taking all the way, and you can easily argue he should take the first pitch no matter what.

Bottom line:  he needs to have his playing time cut, or go to the minors if he can't make these basic adjustments.

Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.

as Morgan Ensberg once said about his AA teammates' hitting: "you can't tell these guys anything. they know it all." anyone who blames hitting coaches for Pence's approach to hitting is shooting at the wrong target.
