Oh my god

SI's main page is reporting that Angels SP Nick Adenhart, age 22, was killed in a traffic accident.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I just saw that and had the same reaction. How tragic.

Tragic.  How does the driver kill three people and have the physical and mental capacity, as well as the rat bastardness, to flee the scene?  Sometimes I just give up trying to understand.

I thought the same thing.  Here's a young guy, making his first start of the year, he's in the big leagues, everything's good, what could happen?  You just never know where that left turn might take you, what might happen after you get on that plane...
What an awful, awful thing for this to happen to someone so young, ballplayer or not.  All because some lowlife couldn't spend 5 minutes waiting at a red light.

Worse.  He fled the scene, leaving an injured passenger in his own car.

Total bummer. I lost someone pretty close to me the same way. Yet everyday I see some asshole mother fucking shitwipe rushing through an intersection without regard for the devastation a couple of thousand pounds of metal can cause.

Apparently the douchebag was violating at least 2 of the "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life" commandments.  Adding DUI to the vehicular manslaughter and Leaving the scene of an accident charges.  This guy deserves to spend a long time in a small cell with someone nicknamed "Big".

Not important in the scheme of things, but the Angels have postponed tonight's game.

Not wanting to sound callous or anything, but...

A player dies tragically - game postponed
A city gets trashed by a hurricane - that city's team is required to dig its arses out from the debris, fly 2,000 miles and walk straight off the plane onto the field for a critical "home" game in the least neutral, neutral venue possible.

Just read that article.  I'm a young guy, and he died even younger than me.  Couldn't imagine.  RIP.

This is one of the worse tradgedies I can imagine.  My heart goes out to his family, and specifically his parents.  Even the notion of losing one my children sends shivers down my spine.

On a side note, regarding the driver who tried to evade police.  I knew a guy in college who constantly skated by in life.  He'd get busted for minor drug offenses, DUIs, etc... He even rolled a truck with his best friend inside and never uttered a single apology about any of his actions.  I suspect the guy who took off w/ his injured passenger is of the same ilk.

he guy was driving drunk with a suspended license...b/c of a DUI.

In my view, that's throw away the key stuff.  He is a menace to the general public and has total disregard for the law.

The ex Mrs Limey was t-boned in very similar circumstances - the guy refused medical attention at the scene (later suing us for his medical bills) but had a string of tickets, including DUIs, as long as your arm.  Presumably he refused treatment at the time because they would've clocked that he'd been drinking.  The good news was that his car was an inch or two lower than hers, so the penetration into the driver's side was slowed by the floor pan, she escaped with minor injuries and a totalled car.  He lost the lawsuit after being dropped by various lawyers and failing to comply with discovery, while trying to pursue it himself, because he was locked up for a third DUI conviction.

PSA:  Despite Mrs Limey having the green, the cops refused to lay blame on the other driver because she mentioned that she didn't look before entering the intersection.  Green only means you can proceed if the intersection is clear.  You do not have right of way over anyone moving through the junction regardless of the colours of the lights.  But if you proceed with caution (i.e. look first), and still get hit, then you have the law on your side.  Remember this phrase: "I looked but never saw him coming - he was on me so fast.".

And murder charges for the drunk
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/04/10/california.pitcher.killed/index.html

Vin Scully, being the classy, classic Vin Scully:
“If I may speak for every member of the Dodger organization, our heartfelt and deepest sympathies to the mother and family of Nick Adenhart, and to every member in the Angels organization, for the untimely accident and death of young Nick last night at the tender age of twenty-two. Nick, from Maryland, had pitched six scoreless innings and was in a car with three friends, and a driver apparently went through a red light and T-boned the car, killing three of the four, including Nick, and one other member is in critical condition. And if there is one thing I’ve learned in all my years — and I haven’t learned much but the one thing I’ve learned: Don’t even waste your time trying to figure out life.

Ground ball through for Andre Ethier, and life continues for those who still have it. And with a leadoff single, Russell Martin will be coming up.

But I would say, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take a moment and say a prayer in memory for Nick, especially for his parents. What a shock to lose a twenty-two-year-old.

Andre Ethier at first base, Russell Martin the batter, James Loney on deck, and the Dodgers try to strike in the second inning against Kevin Correia.”
Vin Scully, as transcribed from the Dodgers-Padres telecast the next day.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

Argeed. Scully calls a TV game like a radio game and does a beautiful job describing the action in almost poetic terms.

His broadcast is on TV and radio for the first 3 innings.  Steiner & co. will do radio for the rest of the game.  He is a real treasure.

Agreed.  Before I moved to LA, I used to put the Dodgers game on at night just to relax before going to bed.  He has the best little stories - always appropriate, never too long and never told so they overshadow the game he's calling.  It's going to be a sad day when he retires.
