Best Opening Day Memories
« on: April 06, 2009, 10:28:46 am »
What are you more memorable experiences from Opening Day and (they don't have to be good ones)?

For me, it came when I attended the Baltimore Orioles' Opening Day in 2003, my first season away from the Houston area. The game was delayed by snow. It made me miss Minute Maid Park even more.

Don't get too nostalgic.  It's expected to be in the 30's before the game is over tonight.  No snow in the forecast though.

The last time I went to Opening Day was in 1986.  Ryan was pitiching, and some rookie named Will Clark slammed a 1st inning homer over the wagon gate in center field, a monster home run.  Jeff Calhoun came in in relief, and did a poor job.  Some guy behind us yelled out 'Hey Calhoun, my grandmother can pitch better than you and she's dead!'  Strange.

I was the ultimate goody-goody in high school, and my mom a strict enforcer of the rules (like "no skipping school"). I was all set to attend opening day in the Dome my junior year of HS, as it worked out that OD was a school holiday. Then bad weather hit and we had to go to school that day, so I missed the game.

Fast forward to senior year of HS, and this year it's a normal school day (and again an afternoon game). But I won tickets to the game in a drawing at work (I was a sacker at Randalls), and my mom not only let me go, she skipped work to go with me. The Astros lost, but it's still a good memory (and to date, my only MLB Opening Day).

The first day at "Enron Field" in 2000 was pretty special. I walked in at the CF entrance, since that's where my brick is, and took in the site from the farthest spot from home plate. It was quite breath-taking. Wish the game had turned out better, but oh well :)

Opening Day 1988 at old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Beautiful day in the the RF bleachers with the Baltimorans. Drank lots of whiskey adn beer that day. Teddy Higuera shut down the home team 10-0. It was the first of 21 consecutive losses for the O's. They canned Ripken, Sr. after six losses, but it didn't matter.

Sophomore year of high school.  My best friend and I skipped school and headed to old Comiskey to meet friends and take in OD.  Pouring rain delayed the game, but we had a blast.

Old Comiskey was where I saw my first night game. Walking out of the concourse and seeing the bright green field bathed in the lights made quite an impression.

1987 against the dojers.  Cheo hit a bomb in the 7th or 8th off Oral Hersheyhymen to break a tie and it proved to be the game winner.  Sitting in the mezzanine between home and 1st.  A group of guys were sitting in front of us and one of them was a dojer fan.  Pretty obnoxious most of the game but when Cheo went deep I started pounding on top of his head with my Astros cap yelling Cruzzzzzz.  To his credit he didn't whip my ass.  Lots of dome foam that day and an Astros win.

Ah. Dome foam. I remember it well. We used to drink a beer an inning, which was tough to do back then because of the Astros good pitching, which made for quick innings, particularly when Mike Scott was on.

And according to the radio this morning, the roof will remain open.

Wrong!  I couldn't believe it when they started closing the roof at the first pitch.

Yeah, there was a chill in the air, but I would have preferred it open.  April.  Opening day.  My first opening day game.  Etc.

Great time tonight.  The Mrs. and I enjoyed seeing some familiar faces and meeting new ones.  Props to JaneDoe for putting this together.  It's always nice to be able to place faces with the names.  Zipp did a lot of filming.  I hope there is nothing too embarrassing to be posted on youtube.  For those that have not attended a SnS event, they are worth your while.  Hope to see Mr. Happy at the July game.

Oh yeah.  FUCK THE CUBS.  In spite of losing the opener, it was a good time to be had.

Opening Day, Houston, 2009. Beautiful park, good times, great friends and a Star Dog with chili, cheese and onions that will likely make this flight home a challange.

Day 2 of the season is going to be a long one.

It was really nice meeting the new people and great seeing all the perfect ones I already knew.

Funny how your first impressions are the funniest some times.  I glanced over towards those freaks and asked myself "Self... what player are those people fans of?".  The closest I could think of was Doug Brocail, the guy who looks like the kind you'd drink a sixer with.  Then I realized that not every costumed freak at the park was about being in a contrived player fan club.

Speaking of getting things in the mail and completely off topic, I got my copy of the Scout Prospect Guide in the mail this week.  The Astros page looks nice with SpikesnStars printed next to the author's name.  I may have embarrassed this place, but oh well.  All ya'll go get one at the newsstand.

Ladies and Germs, we are remiss to not prop this man enough.  He and Duman provide the best coverage for the Astros minor leagues and as a testament to that, our very own Jacksonian gets some printed run with this Scouts Guide as a writer of minor league information on the Astros.

Well done again, extremely proud of you and Duman!  Now... get back to work!

Sorry gentlemen, but the affairs of State must take precedence over the, uh, affairs of State.

I'll do it.  I need to mail him, Jacksonian and Duman their caps this week, so I'll toss in the magnet schedule for Craig as well.

Thanks!

Cool, I'll be sure to pick up a few and spread 'em around.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

It's that plastic type paper so I'm not sure they're flushable.

Two things:

1)  I ended up with two extra refrigerator magnets, so if you need one, send me a P.M.

2)  I made a slight SNAFU on when I was going to have custody of my son in July.  Seeking an extra ticket to the steM game.  If you KNOW that you will not be in attendance and have one to spare..... I promise to put earplugs in my son's ears.  Mostly to protect him from my profanities, but still, if you gotta ticket.....   Thanks.  Send P.M.

Fridge magnets are now spoken for.  Thanks for playing.  The ticket for the July get together is still needed.  Show some love to a brutha's son.

I would also like some duckets if they come up.  If not I will get tickets to the game anyways and sit by you guys again.  Fun times.

"Of course, you'll have the good taste not to mention that I spoke with you."
Das, I shall frame said check and bring it to the steM game for a proper burial.
