But the chimpanzee returned and went after several of the officers, who retreated into their cars, Conklin said. An officer shot Travis several times after the animal opened the door to his cruiser and started to get in.
Police have dealt with him in the past, including an incident in 2003 when he escaped from his owners' vehicle in downtown Stamford for two hours. Officers used cookies, macadamia treats and ice cream in an attempt to lure him, but subdued him only after he became too tired to resist. At the time of the 2003 incident, police said the Herolds told them the chimpanzee was toilet trained, dressed himself, took his own bath, ate at the table and drank wine from a stemmed glass. He also brushed his teeth using a Water Pik, logged onto the computer to look at pictures, and watched television using the remote control, police said.

Chimps are scary as hell. That one was 200 lbs. A few years ago there was an article about some chimps that got loose from their holding area in west Africa and attacked some tourists and guides. First the leader bit off the hand of one of the people in the front seat, then got mad when the driver fought him off and bit off the front of his skull. He then dragged the body into the trees as a trophy. Later they attacked again, trying to disable the remaining people by biting their hands and the backs of their legs. One of the survivors lives here in central Texas and was interviewed by a friend of mine. Horrifying story, and one I thought about every day when I ended up going to Kenya a couple of years ago.Edit: I found a couple of stories about that attack.Texas man tells story of fatal chimp attack Chimpanzee attack causes West African chaos
Then there was this attack a few years ago: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7087194/where the chimp chewed off the victim's face, foot, and balls. They can be vicious animals and clearly should not be kept as pets.
If the article had mentioned that the chimp logged onto the computer and once through looking at pictures posted comments on Chronicle blogs the world would suddenly make a great deal more sense.
Tragic situation. However, WTF was the owner doing giving the chimp tea mixed with Xanax? Did the vet prescribe the drug to the chimp or did the owner assume that the chimp would have the same reaction to Xanax that most humans would? What course of treatment was next? A syringe of heroin? Main point is that Xanax is a mood altering drug. Owner playing amateur chimp psychiatrist is probably not a good idea.http://wcbstv.com/local/chimpanzee.attack.stamford.2.937244.html
What wasn't reported, only to be revealed at a later press conference, is the rampant steroid and HGH usage.
but the chimp is sorry.
And he was only using them because of all of the pressure he felt to live up to his contract.

"Until you've . . . eaten with a chimp and bathed with a chimp, you don't know a chimp," she said.
This story now has gone freaky.http://www.nypost.com/seven/02192009/news/regionalnews/its_animal_attraction_155922.htmThis is the money quote:
The implication is that she probably had biblical knowledge of the chimp. I've heard of letting God into your Heart, but never a monkey into your cooter. But people from the south are all savages, so what do I know.
The chimpanzee that savagely attacked a Connecticut woman tore off her hands and a substantial part of her face, and left her with a traumatic brain injury, the Cleveland Clinic said Wednesday in a statement that casts new doubt on her chances of recovery.
