Max Sapp in hospital
« on: December 30, 2008, 11:55:50 pm »
Went in for sinus surgery and contracted meningitits. Been in the hospital for a couple of weeks and is currently on a respirator.  Scary.

Wow, that is scary. I hope the kid gets well soon.

Why post anything past "Scary"?

Do we have a "poor taste" award? ... Not that this would be the only nomination, just wondering.

Apparently he's breathing without the respirator now, but has "significant memory loss." Hopefully the recovery/therapy goes well.

Sapp improving

Apparently the sinus condition that is underlying this may date back to August 2007.  So how does this relate to his past performance?

Quote
assistant general manager Ricky Bennett was hesitant to make assumptions that could only be categorized as speculative.

"Looking back on the last year or two, Max has missed a number of games because of small, nagging issues that never seemed to go away but I can't say that this particular condition caused any 'lack of performance' on Max's part," Bennett said. "When players continue to miss time for various reasons, it's always a concern because it affects their overall development. Hopefully, knowing what we know now, we can keep him healthy and he can become much more productive in 2009. It's a big year for Max and he realizes that."

Always ready to go to a game.

Having survived viral meningitis, I can only feel for Sapp. That was the first time that I ever truly felt that I was going to die.

Amazing how quickly it went from:

"We're not thinking about baseball right now," Bennett said. "We have to get him healthy and back to normal. That's all that matters right now."

I'm glad that the shift in attitude indicates he's getting better.

Thanks for the reminder. However, I have been much more sanguine about mortality since then.

As if I wasn't having enough trouble getting to sleep (it's 4:30 AM and I'm posting for crying out loud).  Guess I'll go brew a pot of coffee and watch the first of 18 SportsCenters for the day.  I understand there was a football game on last night...

Absolutely. When I had viral meningitis, I had fever of 100 or greater for thirty consecutive days. It took me six months to really recover. It may hamper Sapp much of this season, I fear.

I had to check... to clarify, Sapp was released from the hospital, not by the Astros.
