If you want to save your self from reading way too many words, here's the punchline:

Quote from: Brad Lidge
"There's definitely a lot of pride," Lidge said. "There wasn't just an underlying theme with the Astros. There was nobody that it really [made you upset] to lose to. Here, it really makes people angry, especially the players and fans, to lose to the Mets. It's very frustrating for us, because there's been a lot said between the two teams. There was never anything like that in Houston."
"We live in a society of laws. Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies? For fun? Well, I didn't hear anybody laughing, did you?"

I used to pull for Lidge, but no more. He called out the team and its fans. He goes to the top of the dislike stack. I hope that the Mets stomp on him.

Hmmm, I read that as saying the Astros were well respected and also respected their opponents. Just the opposite of the Mets/Phillies situation. Maybe it's just me.

You could be correct, but it just palpably struck me the other way.

I read it as saying that there wasn't a passionate rivalry with any team that the Astros played, but I still just shrug my shoulders. I wake up every day with the good fortune of not rooting for the Phillies or the Mets. Advantage, me.

Lidge played hard for Houston and was always a stand up guy win or lose.  You get a mike stuck in your face enough times, things don't always come out the way you want them to.

That's how I read it too.  Some people may find that boring, but for my money it's a lot better than being a Phillies or Mets fan.

I think people in Houston are a little more relaxed...maybe it's the Southern gentility, I dunno.

I think baseball is enjoying a bit of a renaissance anyway, judging by the attendance numbers.  It's just that we're not the loudest fans...which is always a disadvantage when the Cubs come to town.

If us not being the loudest fans means I'll never have to hear an Astros crowd chant "LETS GO ASS-TROS!! **CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP**" then I'm even prouder to be a Stros fan.

Now if we could just put an end to The Wave and the Cell Phone Wave Behind Home Plate....

Is there a measure of penis envy between most northern major cities towards NY & Chicago?  Could this just be a bi-product of that?

If I want a meteor to strike Wrigley Field while the Cards are playing the Cubs, does that make me a bad person?

I've asked Limey to be my running mate. He accepted but only if he could wear fishnets and a skirt above his knees.

Technically speaking, what you would want is a meteorite, one that actually hits the earth. Or, to be really sure, an asteroid.

I'd want some dinosaur on the field first to eat both teams, then the asteroid and then a really big flood.

Didn't exist. God created the sun, the stars, the heavens and the earth, and then made Adam and Eve. The Bible never says anything about dinosaurs. You can't say there were dinosaurs when you never saw them. Someone actually saw Adam and Eve. No one ever saw a Tyrannosaurus rex.

You're a dumbass.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Give it a fucking rest. Lidge is 2-0, 2.15 and just recorded his 34 save against the Mets at Shea. He has been nails this year.

Maybe I overreacted. I know that I have pride with respect to the Astros and consider a few clubs as rivals, whether the players do or not. Lidge has been lights out this year.

The Astros teams Lidge played on were renowned for professionalism and respect for their opponents.  They played hard because they did not underestimate their opponents.  The situation Lidge finds in Philadelphia is a rivalry built on hate and anger.  You can judge for yourself the more reliable motivation.

No kidding.  That and there's that whole mob mentality that is Phildelphia fan.  While it's bad for outsiders looking in on Eagle and Philly fan, it's off the charts psycho with Flyer fan.  Somehow 76er fan isn't as high on those hate charts, or the awareness of such isn't as noticeable.

The chip on that town's shoulder looks like a boulder in comparison to those on the shoulders of "suffering" fans from other cities.  Some of my favorite guys to shoot the shit with in relation to sports are Philadelphia fans from south jersey and the Philly area; they hate everybody and insist that their teams' player do, too.  They find it almost quaint, as well as a requirement to fit in.

It appeared to me that Lidge was trying as politely as he could to play up to that dynamic.  I certainly didn't take it as "Houston doesn't care."

That brings me back to the, IIRC, Southwest Airlines commerical about Philadelphia.  It included an actor saying, "It's like a baby New York".  Knowing Philly fan, I laughed a little at that one.

For the record, the skirt is at the dry cleaners, they don't make fishnets in my size, and the team I really, really, really hate losing to is the shit-bucket Pirates against whom the Astros are 2 and motherfucking 7 this year.

Tell me why...
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.
