Road Wandy.  BB, Infield single to SS.  RBI Double to LF.  Runners on 2nd and 3rd, no outs.

seriously, Pence is horrible, and i do not care if he hits a grand slam next time up. he pulls off of everything, and he just hacks at the ball.

Two RH hits from Blum today. He was hitting a very Towles like .162 against southpaws before today.

These games seem to get won by the team with fewest hits.  Not looking good for the 'Stros at this point.

Got beaten on Monday 9-3, despite being even in the hit column.  Last night they Astros won 5-2 while being out-hit 10-8.  Today they trail by 1 but have 6 hits to MIL's 3.

Not trying to devine anything from this.  Just saying that it's an odd quirk of the series thus far.

This should be a balls-to-the-wall, take no prisoners, flat out, leave nothing in the tank kind of game for the Astros.  I can't see it, but it almost sounds like they're mailing it in.

well fuckin' shit. two pitches and Gagne gets out of it, when he must've been feeling really frustrated by all three baserunners. Way to let him off the hook.

Pitchers have been pitching him the same way all damn year. Can he really be that hard-headed that he keeps rolling over on crappy sliders on the outer part of the plate? Or maybe he's rolling over FBs now too.

It's amazing that Berkman and Tejada can have a perfect idea of what the team needs, dropping down a bunt and faking a HBP to reach base.  And then Pence can just go reaching at the first low slider/split he sees on 0-0 with the bases loaded.   First pitch swinging is one thing.  Swinging at that first pitch with ZERO authority is just fucking stupid.

He doesn't appear to be able to adjust at all.  He hasn't changed his approach at any time since he came up, regardless of where he is in the line up, what inning it is or what the game situation is.  He just hacks at anything he sees coming out of the pitcher's hand.

not all of us!!!  I don't think he's even as cute as Wiggington.

I've been wanting to trade him all season for a pitcher.  I started this week looking for duct tape to attach Backe to him.

Seems like this would be something a hitting coach should be able to help him with, or is it?

If he got all the way to the majors swinging like he's trying to kill snakes with one foot stuck in a gopher hole, why do you think he will suddenly abandon that for whatever his umpteenth hitting coach tells him?

Don't remember his ABs last year (and portions of this year) looking nearly as bad as they have been for the last month or two.  He definitely wasn't pulling off pitches to the level he has been lately.

He had one the other night where he swung at a slider that started out low and away and then proceeded to bounce in the dirt before it got to the plate. No matter, he was already hacking away. Strike one.

Greg Lucas was quoting Coop as saying after today's game something to the effect of "back in his day" in that situation a player would go to the plate looking for a single pitch in a certain zone, and if it wasn't there he wouldn't swing.

He's swinging harder and trying to hack his way out of a hitting slump.  Overall, though, his technique hasn't changed one iota in over a year in the bigs.  I saw him on his debut at MMPUS (I think, or certainly very early) and was shocked at his practice swings.

Because he uses his upper body in isolation, his front foot being planted and his back foot simply trailing, when he swings harder he can only do so if he puts more body into it.  He can't swing any harder with his arms, and he leaves them behind.  This results in the "pulling off" we see, which is the same as "over the top" in golf.  All you can do, once your body is that far ahead, is hit it high right or low left...in either sport.  The big difference is that, in baseball, sometimes those misses are ok.

When did that approach go out of fashion?  (See Kabong, El).

HOLY CRAP.

first damn pitch.

he needs to go to the bench.

what could he have been thinking?   any player knows you make the pitcher come to you in that situation, unless he gets you to two strikes in the count.  you sure don't swing at the first pitch unless it's in your happy zone.

I agree with Jim that Hunter doesn't appear to think about anything.  He 's just churning at full throttle 100% of the time, and never stops to think about the situation he's in.  See door, glass.
