Don't remember his ABs last year (and portions of this year) looking nearly as bad as they have been for the last month or two. He definitely wasn't pulling off pitches to the level he has been lately.
He's swinging harder and trying to hack his way out of a hitting slump. Overall, though, his technique hasn't changed one iota in over a year in the bigs. I saw him on his debut at MMPUS (I think, or certainly very early) and was shocked at his practice swings.
Because he uses his upper body in isolation, his front foot being planted and his back foot simply trailing, when he swings harder he can only do so if he puts more body into it. He can't swing any harder with his arms, and he leaves them behind. This results in the "pulling off" we see, which is the same as "over the top" in golf. All you can do, once your body is that far ahead, is hit it high right or low left...in either sport. The big difference is that, in baseball, sometimes those misses are ok.
