Proximity and Minor League Teams
« on: May 30, 2008, 04:06:10 pm »
There were some concerns about what would happen to RR & CC when Nolan Ryan jumped to the Rangers front office this off season.  This is an article about how the Rangers like their relationship with Frisco based on proximity.  What I found interesting was the inclusion of this:

Quote
Rangers president Nolan Ryan, who owns the Houston Astros' affiliates in Round Rock and Corpus Christi, says he expects more major league clubs to seek similar arrangements.

I don't see CC being an issue but I expect the competition for RR will be hot and heavy when the development agreement expires.  The Rangers current AAA affiliate is Oklahoma City.

I think the Rangers work hard on projecting their market north.  Recall that Tulsa was their AA franchise before Frisco got a team in the TL.  It's a lot closer for someone in Okeyland to drive to Arlington than to Kansas City or Colorado, and any Rangers fans in CenTex are probably already in the fold.

I think that Houston has done a shitty or otherwise listless job at stamping their territory.  Maybe they've run the numbers and it doesn't matter but I've been mystified at their lack of interest in promoting Houston Astros baseball in what should be their neck of the woods.
