pence = new biggio
« on: May 20, 2008, 08:48:22 pm »
pence is the reincarnation of biggio. he hustles and runs out every play, offense and defense. he truly loves the game. i get so pissed when i see lee et al jogging down the first base line on grounders. did you see how excited he was running back to the dugout after that diving grab earlier this week? jd said it was like watching a little league game pence was so happy. and the grand slam he just hit against the cubs? that homer meant more to him than it would have to any other player on the team. hope he keeps it up.

If you want to look for Biggio's "reincarnation", you're better served looking at SS.

Last I heard, Bidge is still alive and well, setting up to coach a HS team.  There is no other #7.

actually, his mom's cousin's son's wife's stepdaughter is my sister...
no im not related, just giving credit where it's due. im perfectly calm, dont worry.
you can chalk up not covering bourn on the itphr to inexperience and confusion about the call (it was an actual homerun afterall). im not saying hes a perfect player, just that hes got the enthusiasm about the game that every player should.

I get you enthusiasm for Hunter. He is exciting to watch. However, PENCE! is more different than Biggio than he is similar.

He's enthusiastic, and that's good.  I don't think anyone faults Pence for acting like he's happy to be there.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I enjoy his enthusiasm, too.  But I'd rather the rest of the team try to emulate one Miguel Tejada, whose joyful reaction to Thunder Pants' granny (NTTAWWT) was my favorite part of the highlight (aside from the Good Guys scoring four runs).
It's a treat to have so many players on the team that openly love the game; the fact that they're playing good baseball only enhances the experience.  IPHR notwithstanding.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

Let's not confuse a lack of outward enthusiasm for a lack of love for the game. I'm sure Bagwell loved the game as much as Tejada or Pence, but he had a different personality when he played.

I like enthusiasm as much as the next guy, but when the game's on the line, give me steely resolve and concentration any day.

this is total bs. LL players know to back up plays on balls not hit in their area. as HH said, his head was up his ass on that play.

Pence is a nice player so far, but it is a wee bit early to call him the next anyone. better that he be the first Pence and make that name last in baseball.

Personally, I like Pence's enthusiasm.  I like Tejada's enthusiasm.  I even like Valverde's "antics" after he gets a save and despite the pre-season discussions, I don't even think that Berkman has a problem with it -- at least Berkman's on-field reaction doesn't seem to indicate any problem.

I appreciated the way that Biggio and Bagwell held themselves out.  But I like this more.  Maybe it's because I was jumping around my living room when Pence hit the grand slam (and I'm almost 40) so why would it bother me if a 25-year year old player is doing it.  In fact, I would expect him to do so.

No problem with joyful enthusiasm, as long as it is not intended to show up the opposition.  However, the curtain call after the granny had a strong whiff of asshattery about it.

His catch Friday night was absolutely fabulous... a great catch indeed.  His dance and celebration sprint to the dugout and then his want to bear hug every teammate screaming "Didja see me make that catch, didja, huh? huh? huh?  Come here, I want a hug!" was a bit too much.  There is excitement, which he certainly has and then there is overdoing it just a tad.

Carlos Lee had to approach the kid in the dugout on Friday night and asked him to tone it down about a 1,000 notches.

Imagine the look Bags would've given him.

In game six of the NLCS in St. Louis, Baggs was stoically watching the last few outs being recorded by Dan "The Wrecking Ball" Wheeler.  This was the biggest day in Astros history, a day that all Astros fans, players and most especially the arguably greatest Astros player ever waited for.  And there the man was, stoically watching the whole thing unfold.  Gyrating next to him was one Brandon Backe, jumping up and down for every pitch thrown, yelling at every second, every minute, every good thing happening.  Backe is a longtime Astros fan, a fan of the very man standing next to him.  Before the very last out was recorded, Baggs turns over to Backe as he is now doing a jumping bean routine because he cannot hold back the huge excitement he was feeling as most of us were that night as fans.

Baggs motions not in an eggszaggerated manner, but subtle, to Backe and as quickly as he began the celebration ritual, Brandon stopped.  Dead. In. His. Tracks.  For the next few minutes as the last out was recorded, Backe was motionless as his idol wanted to keep dignity in the moment.  His type of professional dignity and he had earned the right to expect it and demand it from his teammates.  Backe granted the wish of the team leader and waited until the ball landed in Jason Lane's glove to explode out into the field, the first guy out to thump his chest, and jump on anyone he could find.  He almost beat Brad Ausmus out to the mound to celebrate with Dan Wheeler.  Ausmus is still fast for a catcher and that is the only reason Backe wasn't the first one to arrive.

Bagwell?  When Lane made the final out, Baggy thumped his fist into the towel and that was it in terms of celebration.  One thump into a towel.  Pure Bagwell.

I am all in favour of enthusiasm.  This is sports, after all.  But it must be tempered with respect for your opponent, respect for the game and the preservation of your own dignity.  I don't think Backe leaping around in the dugout violated any of the above, but I also have no problem with Bagwell stamping his tenets on the younger players.  I was his (and Biggio's) team at that point, so that was entirely fair and appropriate.

Now that the era of Bagwellian stoicism has passed, I am (as TTB said before) comfortable with the decorum displayed by the current team.  Pence hopefully will not again go flapping his batting helmet in the middle of a game in the second month of the season (I expect Ausmus kangarooed him for that one), and I wish Berkman didn't bitch so much about being rung up on a borderline called strike three (if it's that close he should be swinging).  But that's about it.  Valverde doesn't seem that animated to me - easily a decibel or two below Lima - and everything seems to be genuine enthusiasm rather than Pooholian cuntishness.

As has been noted by you and everyone else here, Pence pretty much flips the fuck out anytime something good happens. Please compare and contrast this observation with what you know of Biggio's demeanor, then revisit the original premise. We'll wait.

So we can safely say that Bagwell will be brought in as Pence's new mentor, and spaz will now stride to the plate to the sounds of "Golddigger"?
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Pete Sampras was criticized for not being emotional enough on the court. Bagwell and Sampras were both of the mold that success was best celebrated by giving the impression that you had already been there and done that a 1,000 times before.
I don't see anything wrong with showing emotion, in moderation of course.  Like Limey said, it is sports.  Its not like its supposed to be a funeral.  IMO, its ok to be fiery as long as you aren't showing up your opponent, and its not after every single base hit or opponent you retire.

Sorry for the thread jack, back to the main topic - Pence's sinfully alluring friend.  Wait, what is this thread about again?
Today seems like a good day to burn a bridge or two

I am officially in favor of Terrie B.

One gains a clearer understanding of why young Hunter might have wished to return to the hot tub with alacrity.

A friend of mine knows Terrie B and he asked her about the patio door incident. She said she felt horrible because they had left it open the whole evening but for some reason she just decided to close it the last time she came out.

Anyway, wow.
