Berkman
« on: May 20, 2008, 04:47:30 pm »
Just saw Berkman on PTI.  Highlights were that he said Albert Pujols is the best in the game, bar none, and the one guy with a shot at the triple crown.  Also talked about the "genesis" of the nickname Big Puma.

Anyone think Berkman has a legit shot at the triple crown?

No.  Managers nowadays manage so they won't lose their jobs so if Berkman is anywhere near the triple crown, he will get nothing to hit the last month of the season.  He'll get the Bonds treatment and get walked any chance they get.  Makes getting the triple crown that much more difficult.  Plus Berkman has to face reliever specialist (like last night in Mormol) that makes today's chances of a triple crown winner even that much more harder.

Why not?
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

Which happens first: .400, or triple crown?
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Triple crown
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I have been surprised they have pitched to Berkman through this entire streak.  To me it seemed that there were places (e.g., Tejada had just doubled with 2 out, then Berkman singled) where this ridiculously hot (NTTAWWT) hitter would have gotten Pujols or Bonds treatment. I have been happy that they have pitched to him, but a little surprised at times.  You'd think they'd at least pitch way around him more often.

If Lee hits around .300 and the top of the order keeps getting on, I think he would have an outside shot at the Triple Crown.  I seriously doubt it, but I think it's possible.  The Triple Crown relies so much on your teammates, the other players in the league, staying health, etc. that having a monster year with all those variables is such a long shot for anyone.

One factor that helps the cause is that the NL doesn't seem to have a Tony Gwynn or Matt Williams who just lights up one category.  That would certainly help.  Hmm, maybe Prince Fielder and Ryan Howard would fall into that mold?

Put me down for Triple Crown too.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The Cubs tried to pitch around him last night, but he wouldn't let them.
