Broadcaster: 1560 The Game
Host: David Nuno (Noon-yo)
Co-Host: Rodney Waites
SnS Host: Andyzipp
Podcast Page: Gametime with David Nuno
Podcast Archives: Gametime Show archives, including SnS shows
Show Webcam: Live webcam streaming of the show

What's on the Menu (Topics Du Jour):

  • LaRussa, burning with "desire" and "drive" or just burning from jock itch?
  • Clemens, shame on you dirty old man!
  • Michael Bourn, is it time to take a seat for a while and let Darrin Erstad have a few starts here?
  • Cheito: Is that spanish for "can't hit better than Brad Ausmus"?
  • Shawn Chacon, legit #2 man for the Houston Astros or is it too early to tell?
  • Andy, ask Noe why ESPN wants to trade Oswalt to Boston for a bag of magic beans?
  • Lookee 'dar: Keeping up with traded away Astros, especially Lidge, Qualls, Scott and Burke.  Jim Molony of MLB.com claims the "Lights Out Lidge is Back!"  How does that make you feel, Mr. Know-it-all-baseball-fan-for-the-Houston-Astros-who-wanted-him-traded-for-a-bag-of-used-balls!
  • The existence of Baseball Gods (BBGs): myth or real? If real then why do they hate Houston so much? This is also known as the "Limey Sucks!" topic.
  • Cecil Cooper: a propensity to throw players under the bus... is this a good idea skip?  Aren't buses too expensive to do that?
  • Hunter Pence: Has this guy ever seen a slider he doesn't like?  Hmmmm... sliders!
  • Quien es mas macho: Miguel Tejada or Wesley Wright (formerly Rodney Allen Ripley)?  Lance Berkman wants to know.
  • Uniform Talk: There is a SnS TZ demographic that cares very much for what uniforms the Astros wear.  These are the same forum members who love to watch "Project Runway" and comment on "who is in and who is out". Of course, I watch it because of the Heidi Klum factor.  "See you later, decorator!".
  • "Select" T-Ball: Is this going too far?
  • Houston Astros 2008, Top Defense in the League? Is this a backhanded compliment and why?

You can use this forum, this particular thread to pre-submit your items of interest for the show if you feel you just cannot call in.  Like going to a New Orleans Jazz Festival type of excuse.  Yeah, right!  During the show, you can use this thread as a real time thread like Gamezone to berate Andyzipp's radio appearance much like you do any and every show you've ever listened to and managed to cast vitrol towards in your life.  Andy would have it no other way.

But please, if you feel the need to call: 713-439-1560, do so... they, 1560 the Game, actually encourage it!  I guess there is no accounting for taste!

BTW - let us know, what do you think would be the best music intro for our SnS segment.  Sort of like the players having an intro song when they come in from the bullpen or come up to bat.  Gimme your best suggestions here and I'll list them for Zipp and Dave to consider:

  • Come on, Let's go - Los Lobos
  • Shakin' Shakin' Shakes - Los Lobos
  • We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
  • Mandy - Barry Manilow
  • Burning Down the House - David Byrne
  • Run to the Hills - Iron Maiden
  • Hell - Squirrel Nut Zippers
  • Nobody's Perfect - Hannah Montana (doubles as the Roger Clemens theme song)
  • Charles In Charge Theme Song - The Blanks
  • Riot Act - Elvis Costello
  • It's A Long Way To The Top - Dropkick Murphys
  • If You Want Blood - AC/DC

The thread we had going about the success of who we sent out in trades vs. what we got in return is very interesting. Especially with Qualls and Lidge at 0.00 and Luke Scott 3 for his last 27. And Burke 5/36 on the year.
Oye. Vamos, vamos.

Tejada: better than advertised and a field general to boot.

Pence: will he overcome the book or is he the heir apparent to Biggio's fondness for flailing at sliders low and away?

Bourne: in a funk with some sulking to go with it.

Sampson: has taken on the appearance of the proverbial "guy in the red shirt at the beginning of a Star Trek episode who gets it."

Speaking of red shirts, how 'bout more road grays?

Anal Fissure Update: can maybe get the Montrose demographic.

Cooper on Walks: pitching staff may want to listen to what he says.

Cooper's outburst in Arizona.

That is actually a very good topic to discuss.  Brownie mentioned that the commissioner called Cooper to consul him on not being too high strung about things.  Basically, he called as a friend to tell Coop he's headed for a meltdown if he doesn't learn how to handle this sort of ups and downs of managing.

Cooper headed for a Hal McRae soon?  Discuss...

Even though he doesn't curse, the umpires seem on edge with him,

arguing Towles' homerun, "They said, 'No, no, no, it didn't go out.' I'm not going to argue. I said, 'OK, whatever you say.' That's what happened. When I walked away I asked [Schreiber] how his wife and family were. He said, 'What did you say?' I said, 'How's the wife and family?' Then I walked away. Just trying to keep it light."

I'd like to have heard the inflection on the "What did you say?"

Cooper, as I know from all accounts, is a very decent man... a really great guy with high moral standards.  He doesn't curse, is akin to having Tony Dungy on your bench as the leader of the team.  Having said that, he may be on edge as a first time manager because he is wearing his emotions way too much on his sleeves.

First time managers... what are ya gonna do?

Well, I say wait them out and see if they're going to self-implode or learn from these experiences and move on to be better MLB managers.  Larry Dierker went the opposite direction and became very bitter and very old by the time he basically forced the Astros to re-assign him.  His daughter called Dierk after on particular press conference after a bitter loss to the Braves in the playoffs and expressed concern for her Dad's health.  It was evident to his daughter over the television airwaves that her Dad was not the same man she knew and the job was getting to him.

Let's hope Coop can learn and move on.

As much as I too wanted to call Borkowski a fat tub of goo, it ain't a good idea to do that in public.  He's got to get over calling these guys out or they'll turn on him and when it comes to players versus managers the outcome is always certain.

Is this thing going on? I totally forgot about it at 9:55. Honestly, at 9:54 I looked at the clock and said to myself, "oh, that on-air trainwreck is about to begin." Didn't think about till now, and I've been listening to four minutes of commercials.

Andy,

Let's talk a little about the rookies, WadeSmith went with rooks in key defensive positions (catcher and CF) as well as a key offensive position (lead off). Now, a rookie has pitched himself into a key role in the bullpen.

Bourn - His defense has been fantastic, except recently he's had trouble coming in on balls, and his baserunning has been very good. His approach has been pretty good at the plate, but he has struggled hitting the baseball. What are some options to help him adjust? Leave him alone? Drop him in the order? Round Rock?

Towles - How do you think he's defense has been thus far? He has shown power and good patience at the plate, but his average is not great, but he's a catcher so who cares.

Workout songs:
Monster Magnet - Spacelord
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell

ETA: I would have called, but I'm sick and have little to no voice. I will call next time.

Great job Andrew T . . . something

I listened to the first five minutes and said to myself "Self... damn, Zipper's pretty good.  He sounds just like those journalist who get some free ride on the radio and then think highly of themselves and get a big head and then quit their day job writing and then force themselves upon the sports talk listening audience as if we somehow deserved it for some past sin or something.  YES... he's *THAT* good!  Maybe even better".

So then I called in to see if I could derail his game and damnit if he didn't throw that "good to see they let you around children again" card at me.  The man is better than good, he's okay!  Then I had to run coach a little league game.

Any way, we got slaughtered today by the Rangers, I blame me for not being focused as the coach.  Next time.  I wonder if they'll have a podcast of the show so I can listen to the whole thing at leisure.  Props to you Andy Tsmeoiqwpsadjvichwhatev... mix in a vowel why don't you?

How come you didn't go by "Zipper"?

A little late to the party, but I nominate C'mon Every Beatbox by Big Audio Dynamite.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Can't pick up the station well in the car in the mornings--Are John and Lance still together in the mornings or is it just John?  Their website lists both but only has a bio on John.

"Night Boat to Cairo" - Madness
"Mardy Bum" - Arctic Monkeys
"Sleeping In" - The Postal Service
"No I in Threesome" - Interpol
"Combat Baby" - Metric (alternative "Monster Hospital")
"The Good Times are Killing Me" - Modest Mouse
"Last of the Famous International Playboys" - Morrissey (alternative "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get").

By the way, just got around to listening to last weekend's debut.  Nicely done chaps!  I thought the SnS crew got overshadowed by the hosts late on, but then folks don't get a job talking on the radio if they don't like the sound of their own voice.  Otherwise a solid first outing that showed both the wit and the wisdom that sloshes around in this place.

Congrats chaps, and good luck for #2.
