Is Blum alright?  He has always hit Lohse well.  Interesting that Bourn is hitting second today. We should be able to rough this guy up.

Interesting to move Bourn.  More fastballs for the guy?

Maybe Coop is trying to get his bunting confidence up.

Forgot to add this in the articles link, but Pravata's NYCU today was a good read on the Coards antics as of late.  NYCU: I Hope this is the end of it

I'd also add .093's lecturing of Towles and Pujols' pregame confrontation of Backe to the mix as well.

Having internet issues this morning, so am running to the office to catch the game and will miss the first inning or to.  I'll be able to take PBP 4-6, but would appreciate it if someone could take it over for the beginning of the game.

Matsui takes strike one on the outside corner.
Spins away from an up and in pitch for ball 1.
Swings through high fastball, strike 2. 1-2.
Fouled down the first base line, he ripped that one.
Grounded between first and 2nd, Pujols fields and fires to the pitcher, gets Matsui by a step at first.

One out.

Takes ball one, fastball up.
Takes a curve low. 2-1.
Fouled off the catcher's mitt on a fastball down the middle. 2-2.
Ball 3 is low.
Full count pitch, fastball on the knees, Bourn pops to Glaus.
2 down.

Tejada up, 2 outs nobody on, takes a fastball on the outside corner.
Fouls a knee high fastball into the first base seats. 0-2
Slider off the outside corner and low, ball 1.
Tejada rips one to left field, Schumaker backing and jumps right in front of the fence to haul it in for the out. Miggy gave that one a ride.

3 outs, Mid 1.

Leading off is Schumaker, who takes strike one on the outside corner.
Takes ball one, tailing fastball off the outside corner.
Swings at a low fastball pops to shallow left, Tejada racing out slips as he gets to the ball and makes the catch about 8 feet from the foul line in shallow left. Nice play.

High pop foul near first, Puma glides over and makes the catch.

Nice quick inning by Backe, and fuck you Princess Albert.

Berkman up takes ball one off the outside corner.
Swings through a fastball down the pipe, foul tip.
Takes a close one just off the inside corner. 2-1.
Takes a tailing fastball apparently just on the outside corner. 2-2.
Berkman grounds up the middle, Miles makes the play, but throws the ball away. Berkman would've beaten it anyway looks like. Infield single for Berkman, did not advance on the bad throw.

Carlos takes a fat one right down the pipe, strike one.
Just misses low and outside with a heater. 1-1.
Fouls back another fat pitch. Come on Carlos, two home run pitches. 1-2.
Takes low and away, a slider. 2-2
Brownie doing his best to jinx Loshe, who hasn't given up a homer yet this year.
Carlos hits a soft liner to center, Ankiel charges in and makes a running catch. 1 down.

Pence fouls off ball one, surprise surprise a low slider.
Takes a low fastball, 1-1.
Throw over, Berkman wasn't too far off the bag though.
Pence swings at another ball, a slider off the plate and dinks a roller at Glaus. No play at 2nd, fires to first for out number two. Berkman advances to 2nd.

Loretta takes ball one.
Fouls off a tight fastball, 1-1.
Takes a low slider.
Takes a fastball just off the outside corner, and maybe a bit high. 3-1.
Takes a slider on the knees, strike 2. 3-2 the count.
Loretta fouls off a slider.
Fouls off a knee high fastball.
Loretta lines one over short, Schumaker fields and fires it home, Berkman slides to the outside side of the plate and is JUST SAFE! Throw was just inside the plate, and Yadi Molina couldn't get back and put the tag on him. Loretta moves up to 2nd on the throw.

Great slide by Berkman, his baserunning has improved so far. I think the focus on basestealing may have increased his focus on the basepaths.

Towles takes strike one.
Takes a pitch off the outside corner that Jim Joyce calls strike 2. 0-2.
Towles somehow fouls off a slider off the outside corner and low, stays alive.
Takes ball one inside.
Swings over an inside fastball for the strikeout, but the Astros strike first, 1-0 Good Guys headed to the bottom of the 2nd.

Ludwig takes strike one on the outside corner.
Backe pulls the string on a slider that starts over the plate and slides outside, Ludwig swings and misses. 0-2
Fouls down the right field line on an outside corner fastball. Still 0-2.
Another foul down the RF line on another outside corner fastball.
Filthy slurve starts at belt and falls completely off the table, Ludwig no chance as he swings over it. PONCHE!

Glaus takes ball one, low.
Takes strike one on the outside corner. Backe is pinging the outside corner so fast. 1-1.
Takes that big curve on the inside corner for strike 2. Towles might've bought that call.
Fouls off a low fastball, still 1-2.
Heater up, ball 2.
Fastball on the knees, Glaus smokes it to right center, but Bourn is on his horse and cruises to catch it on the warning track.

2 down.

He's had a few of those already this year. Maybe he's just trying to do the sliding-into-home version of the Jimmy Edmonds "slow up n' dive for it" "spectacular" catch

I haven't had the chance to see many games this year, but man... it is NICE watching Bourn out there! After years of having CF fill-ins, my gut was saying "that falls in" on Glaus' drive. Nope. Bourn got there in good time without having to make a last minute dive or anything. Nice.

Takes up and out, ball one.
Takes a curve that drops in for strike 2. Pretty pitch. 1-2.
Backe misses badly, Towles makes a nice stop on the pitch, 2-2.
Backe takes too long, Pujols calls time.
Goes low and away again, misses badly. 3-2.
Ball 4, low.
Bases loaded.

Backe either barked at Pujols or just stared him down as The Pompous Fuckwad flips his bat at the walk.
Dewey Robinson out to chat.

Ludwig up now and swings at a slider off the outside corner, Loretta fields and takes to 3rd for the force! Great job Brandon!

Okay, someone else wanna pick up pbp?

End 3: Astros 1 - Cards 0.

Astros didn't appear to have the wheel play on for that bunt.  Suprising to me, as good an athlete as Backe is.  Wounldn't have mattered though, it was an excellent bunt.

I'm really worried that Backe is a five inning pitcher, which is not good for a supposed number 2.

Backe's poor pitching aside, that St. Louis team really is filled with cocksuckers.  And for some reason, the BFIB chanting "Ya-di!" really pissed me off too.  They can all go fuck themselves.

good observation. it hasn't been as much of an issue in the past, IIRC. do you think that's due to a lack of veteran presence on the current team? in the past they had guys like Edmonds, Morris, Renteria, Matheny, etc., who seemed to be smart ballplayers and good human beings as well...

Are they selling the 99 yet?  I'll be driving back through Texas in June and wouldn't mind picking up a couple cases to bring back.

Found a bar here in VA with Bock as their "micro of the month," which translates to $2.50 a pint during happy hour through the end of April.  A pleasant end of semester surprise.

there used to be a beautiful symetry to the schedule.....before Interleague play.

I hate interleague play for what it's done to the schedule.
