28-years-old, former Met and Pirate property, thought to be a big deal when the Mets signed him 4 years ago.

He's Cuban, which means he is probably over 30. The more the merrier.

Says there that he's 28.  Are you suggesting that Cubans are known for lying about their age?
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I am suggesting that records aren't kept so well down there. Does anyone really know how old El Duque is? We've seen lots of age problems in baseball with Central Americans. No slight to Cubans in particular intended.

To my knowledge, the government of Cuba's record keeping is fine.  I'm aware of the issues in the Dominican Republic, but not so much elsewhere.

Is there a point in there or are you just running down a list of Cuban players?

I always heard that the Cuban records were fine, El Duque notwithstanding.

This article indicates that it has been more than El Duque.

Is age really relivant?
Who cares how old he is if he can throw?
If he was after a long term contract maybe, but otherwise, imho, the dude could be 40.

I don't recall any age questions from back when he first signed.

Later on the Mets didn't seem too thrilled with his conditioning/work ethic as 'Supersize it' appeared to be among the first English words he learned during the downtime he had waiting for all the immigration snafus solve themselves.

He got in better shape once he got back into things and had that real good start in Arizona (CG, 2-hitter) - but that was his peak and once they decided he wasn't going to make the rotation the following Spring he was released rather abruptly without seeming to even be considered for the pen.  Nothing specifc was ever said but, again, you got the idea they weren't high on his effort.

Two and a half hours, and 16 replies later, and I'm the first to suggest that the Astros are looking to add some Soler Power?

This Cuban's a lot older than his behaviour suggests.

Cabrera resides on page one of this thread.
But that's a different thread ... it seemed appropriate to close this one out.
