Okay what the fuck was that. Did Lee run through a stop sign or was that guy with a beergut at 3b waving him?

If he didn't get a stop sign, they need to replace the third base coach. That was ridiculous.

2 outs & the pitcher coming up, not a bad time to take a shot.  Weird slide from Carlos.  What's the deal with the Stros inability to slide properly?

Backe is not your average hitting pitcher though.

i would guess waved him on with the pitcher due up. but backe can swing the bat which makes that decision even dumber. and doesn't lee out weigh the catcher by about 350? lower your shoulder big fella.

True, but he's a pitcher nonetheless.  Didn't notice the 3B coach, though, so I don't know if Lee went on his own or what.

Lee must have got a terrible jump. He was barely to third when Jenkins scooped it. The throw was 6' wide and he still couldn't score. Ugly.

He wasn't even on the TV screen when the ball got home.  No matter who was on deck, that was a horrible decision to send him (if indeed he sent him).

Baserunning gaffe by the Phils' Brett Myers-what should have been an RBI double becomes a long single for Utley.

Bottom 2nd, Myers on 3rd, Taguchi on 2nd, Utley on 1st, 1 out.

Top 3rd,

Backe works it to 3-2 count, then K's looking.

Bourne work it to 3-2 count, then walks.  Off to the races, I hope.

I'm following on GameDay. Was Bourn's slide into second any better, or did he try to break his leg again?

Didn't get a great look at the play live & just caught the replay on gamecast.  You're right, whoever did what, not a good call.

I'm getting this from the Philly broadcast on XM, so this might be a bit spotty.

Loretta out (not sure how)

Bourne steals 2nd, comes up slowly.

Berkman K's swinging on 2-2 count.

Middle 3rd, no runs, no hits, 1 left.

I'm sure Philly fans are thinking the same way.  They probably think they should be up 8-0 by now.

But as it is, end 3rd, Phils 4, Good Guys 0.

So now we know who Roy passed his sickness on to.

Borkowski walks Howard.

Burrell hits it to 3rd, Blum bobbles and is not able to turn the double play, but he does get Burrell at first.

IBB to Geoff Jenkins.

Chris Coste bloops a single to right.

Bottom 4th bases loaded, 1 out.

When they called Q up so quickly after Towles injury, I was wondering if there was more to it than we had been told. But pinch-hitting today would seem to indicate not.

I think it is a terrible problem. Because Q has made himself valuable, Ausmus should be the odd man out. He is at the end, and his contributions are mostly intangible. Sending the other two back retards their progress and creates bad attitudes or dismay at not being rewarded for progress.

And Towles has played well. He may well have had a Pencian start to the season.  The ifs surrounding Q and JR at the catcher spot made the Ausmus signing crucial.  As of right now, it's a welcome issue.

Howard and Burrell go back-to-back, Howard to right and Burrell squeaks one into the first row in left.

Bot 6th, no out, Phils 8, Astros 1.

Maybe one of them can pitch middle relief and Villareal can go somewhere to get his shit together.

I'd need to see a pitch chart to figure out which of them is fit for middle relief.

The problem is that unless they want to send Quintero back down when Towles returns, they need to address what to do with Ausmus sooner than later. Either that, or carry three catchers.

Is there any room for carrying three catchers? Releasing Ausmus now would be pretty impolitic. Maybe a trade to San Diego?

Perhaps a hammer to several of Brad's fingers?

Completely unlike the rest of his career (about 1 every 10IP).

I do not think they should release or trade him in April. I wish he could coach. That is why they signed him.

Agreed.  Tough situation for the club.

Unless the situation is still Roy hates Q and Roy doesn't trust Towles.  Then he's gonna be irked.  But I agree with Jim, Roy's opinion isn't of paramount concern.

Ring the liberty bell one more time.

Coste drives one out to center to put the Phils up 10-1.

A rainbow gut-clad Astros fan tosses the offending gopher ball back onto the field.  Good on ya, mate!

Still bottom 8, 2 out, Phils squeaking by the Astros (if we're counting in binary) 10-1

There is a whole lot to like about this team.  It's not bad if several things start to shake out like I'm sure they hope it does.  I think by the end of May they will know just how good they are and also where they need to make some modifications.  Right now, I'd rather see Cheito being run out to RF everyday and Pence get a vacation to Round Rock to work out his hitting.  But seems that they will need at least 100 ABs before they do anything like that to the young man.  But if he's still a lost child at 100 ABs, then what happened to Luke Scott, Morgan Ensberg and Adam Everett after a bad start to the season should happen to Pence as well.

As this team is built and with Pence in the 7 hole, IMO his role offensively isn't that important.  IMO, again, overall they are scoring enough runs to win consistently right now, today not withstanding.  The most important young player on this team to me is Bourn.  If he's getting on base regularly, .350OBP, then the 2 guy can do his thing and with 3, 4, 5, and 6 being experience RBI type hitters the Astros look to be fine.

However I don't believe this team is a contender in September because I don't believe Backe, Wandy, and Chacon can over the course of the season keep up even close to the pace they've set early on.  (After his start tomorrow Wandy will have 4 of his next 5 starts on the road.)  And I believe the bullpen is overall middle of the road at best.  There are some bright spots but not enough consistent quality and not enough depth, IMO.  I believe there will be too many holes in the pitching staff come July for Wade to fill.  But, I hope I'm wrong and will gladly admit I am Nostrodumbass in September if the Astros are contending.

Not sure what you mean.

San Diego likened Cassel to Sampson, bulldog mentality but average stuff.  Byrdak looks a lot like Randolph, highly successful and impressive at AAA but for whatever reason unable to translate that in the majors.  He's had multiple shots at the majors and finally had one good partial season at Detroit last year.  Yet, they didn't want him back and despite how he looks at Round Rock and his stuff not a single major league team wanted to offer him a real shot at their 25-man.  There's a disconnect between his talent and his work at the major league level such that major league teams aren't impressed.

Barring injury I don't know who'd they replace right now though.
