Shiner 99
« on: February 27, 2008, 09:30:53 pm »
A friend-- one who ironically doesn't even drink-- just let me know that he picked up some Shiner 99 for a friend.  Apparently it's a Helles lager.  I just got back from a trip to Munich, and if Shiner's version of Helles is anywhere close to what they have there, color me excited.  I'll be checking out Grapevine/Spec's/Whole Foods tomorrow.

Nothing on the Shiner web page.

And if my friend is jerking with me, he'll receive a punch in the throat.  I'm not normally a violent man, but there are some things that are not meant to be joked about.
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

RateBeer confirms the Helles, but I can't find anything else:

Which one, Jim? I tried the Arbor Walk location today and din't see any.

Ended up taking home some Real Ale Full Moon Rye Pale Ale instead... I dig the real Ale varieties.

I talked to a driver last night that said Atoscacita Specs got 5 cases on Wednesday. I didn't get a chance to make it by there, but if you are in the area. Kingwood Specs had not received any yet.

If they do as well with the German "Helles" style lager as they did with the Czech black lager, that will pretty much cover the spectrum.  "Helles" may mean light, but it is not your bud's "light" beer!

Can't wait to try some.

I really hope Houston is not as far down the distribution line as it seemed for the Black lager.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for the spec's on smith.

Helles is actually German for "bright" not "light"

Well, light in the same sense of light-colored/pale, rather than essentially "diet." Ask for a Bier in Germany and you'll usually be asked to clarify "Dunkel, Hell oder Bock?" (Dark, light or bock?)

A lower brow but still shining review...

I went to Specs at the Arbor.

They didn't have any.

I went to Specs by Highland Mall.

They didn't have any.

I got pissed, said "fuck it", and went to HEB to buy some steak to grill to make me feel better.

HEB at Hancock had enough Shiner 99 to choke a donkey.

Bought 2 six packs of it.

I am out of Shiner 99 as of about 1 this morning.

for you Houston-area guys, i got a six-pack tonight from a Kroger in the Woodlands, so hopefully it's out in most of the area now. i just had one a minute ago, and i liked it very much. i'd say it's a more full-bodied Heineken-esque flavor. not heavy in your stomach (like every other Shiner beer i've tried). very good, indeed.

Yep, I picked some up last night at the Kroger at Kirby and South Main, so it's out there around Houston, at least at Kroger.  I haven't tried it yet though.  I'll pop one open tonight, I'm sure.

See, now you just opened up a can of worms for yourself. There's plenty of great beer in Oregon to rival whatever Shiner puts out there. But now you will be exposed to Noe's waxing elequent on fajas, Pravata telling you that a po-boy is not made with "thousand island dressing" and Zipp telling you how you've misidentified the appropriate neighborhood in Houston for your favorite catfish joint. Nothing in Oregon can compete with any of that.

The problem with most microbrews, particularly from California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington, is that they think they are better than they are.  That, and they're bitterer'n shit.  It's like Sam Adams bragging about how much (many?) hops they use.  Hops isn't (aren't?) a substitute for actual beer flavor.  Using so much (many?) hops means your probably just skimping on the real beer flavor, malt.

But you can't use just one "hop".  Hops is hops, however much of it you use.

Good point on the beer flavor, though ... It's become a contest to see who can push the bitterness envelope farther.  Having just returned from the land of Affligem, De Konink, Casteel and some others, though, I'm ready for a little more hoppiness.

you know those two places aren't like...close....right?  that is one epic beer run to start in houston and ending up in fredericksburg.
Here are just a few of the key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers - can you see how incredible this is going to be?

I had lunch at Springhill Cafe in Pflugerville. Pretty good catfish joint. I ate too much.

Sprighill just recently started the buffet.  Pretty good catfish and sides.

BTW, I was at the HEB at Parmer and McNeil and they were unloading cases of 99.  Picked one up and both the Misses and I give it a high five.

I offered one to Mrs. Hawk this weekend (which I picked up at the HEB at Louetta and Steubner.  The beer, not the missus...).  She said "eh...tastes too much like that beer I had in Germany" as she popped open a Miller Lite.  Sigh.

I read all the beer threads and have drunk tons of beer, esp in college, and find myself shockingly beer stupid.  I drank enough crappy beer in college that I stopped drinking beer completely for 15 years.  I've recently started looking at beer again and bought 99 most recentlyrt.  I like it though I've found I'm more fond of the darker beers I've had recently including the 97 Shiner Dark.  A question though as I try to get up to speed.  Is beeradvocate.com any good?  They seem to have a lot of info, but I don't know if it's good info.

The trouble with beeradvocate (and with the beer snobs around here including me) is that there is a lot of time, energy and argumentation around the difference between a "really good" beer and a "great beer".  And since most of that is personal taste, it tends to devolve to "Oh Yeah???" and "No Way!!" kinds of logic.  In fact, once you get rid of all the mass-market taste-free beers so common in the US of A, you can be very happy with almost anything that has real flavor.  Then it's just a case of following your tastebuds.  There is a good site that I forget right now, but will post later, that tries to explain the various styles in a clear way.

OK ... Here is the link http://www.belgianstyle.com/mmguide/style/style01.html to the style guide.  I misremembered, and it is focused on Belgian beers.  For instance, the page on Pilsner style discusses Jupiler in terms of its relatively greater similarity to the original Czech Plzen style as opposed to the dry (and somewhat watery, imo) north German "Pils".  The various sections do a great job of describing the actual flavor differences between styles that might have similar colors.

By the way, I'd love to find something this authoritative on German styles if anyone has a link.  I can distinguish between Pils, Helles vom Faß, Dunkles, Rauchbier, Schwarzbier, Bock, Doppelbock, Mai-bock, Märzen, Alt, etc., but I would love a place to point to that had a better description of what actually makes them different.

By the way, Einbecker Mai-Urbock ("Ur" just meaning "original") is still (imo) the best beer brewed anywhere.

I think the wine snobs have gotten totally silly and I used to find beer enthusiasts a healthy balance to those nutjobs who liked to go on about the hint of gray pebbles (or something else equally ridiculous) in a certain wine.  The evidence that a significant percentage of beer drinkers is headed toward equal silliness is disconcerting to me.  Mind you, I'm pleased to have found in my more mature years that there are beers I actually like the taste of, and I am happy to continue trying new ones.  But I can't bring myself to analyze them much past "like" or "don't like".  Funny, I remember a time (not necessarily fondly) when the only beer snobs I knew were people who refused to drink Milwaukee's Best no matter how drunk they were or how much they might like to be.

Last year they inducted Grandmaster Flash.  I think the "Rock 'n' Roll" part of the name is a misnomer.  Also, the "Way Cool Music 'n' Stuff Hall of Fame" has a little less gravitas.

Thanks for the Belgian link.  I wasn't thinking so much the ratings at beer advocate, I know they're subjective, but rather about the details relating to the beer styles.  Do they accurately describe all the different styles they list?

They seemed pretty accurate to me, although some of the distinctions (e.g. Trappist vs. Brown Ale) seemed a little artificial.  Having Kasteel and De Koninck in different categories is also a little strange, as they are very similar in the glass.

In the old beach-going days, SOP for loading the cooler for the day was to put in one six-pack of whatever one's favorite was at the time (I recall for one thing a brief infatuation with some evil crap from England named Bulldog), followed by 6 or 18 or 24 of of something like Schaeffer Lite.  By the time one got to the Schaeffer, it didn't matter anymore, anyway.

Quaffing highbrow brew on a weekend beach binge made about as much since as using one's Ferrari to pull around the low-boy.

My friend called me up the other day and told me they had the new Shiner at our crummy lil' H.E.B. up here in cotton pickin' dadgum no Black Lager Huntsville. I wouldn't give a shit, but he said it was Munich-style Helles. Which made me jump up and run down there and get a six pack. On a work night. Living dangerously!  ::)

And so I flew into Zurich back in the summer of '02 to go to summer school in Austria. Upon arrival, I took a train to Munich where I spent the first weekend before going an hour or so south to Innsbruck for school. I don't sleep well sitting and the flight was an overnight so I spent the whole flight wide awake. Got some vittles at the Zurich train station and rode into Munich -- about a 3 hour trip. So I got to Munich, having never been to Europe, not really speaking German, jet lagged, sleepy, hungry, etc. I found my hotel, checked in, dropped off my shit, and went downtown looking for some food.

I was hungry and tired, y'all. Every place in the main plaza place was packed with well-scrubbed yuppie and tourist types fallin' out everywhere and all the freakin' menus were printed in this crazy olde englishe script that was impossible to read. Having grown up with some of the food, I probably could've figured out something to order, but I seriously couldn't read the damn menus. I was desperate. So I went inside one of the places and sat at a table with some old dudes. I had no idea what food to get, so I thought I would get a beer to give me more time to think about it. I had read that you order it by asking for ein mass (which means a measure) and you either ask for helles or dunkles (light or dark). So, since it was hot as hell, I asked the crusty old lady for ein mass of helles. She brought it out and it was one of these huge ass glasses. I gave her a 20 or 50 euro note and she asked haben sie klein geldt or some such which I figured out probably that she wanted smaller denominations (after looking stupid for what felt like about five minutes, it kinda clicked). No lady, I just got here from the damn ATM machine. This is the first coin I spent! I never even seen a Euro before! Visibly annoyed, she grunted and booked off to get change. I took a sip of the beer and it was, I swear to Christ, the best beer I have ever had in my life! It was basically a liter of beer -- huge. You have to lift it with both hands.

Sometime shortly after that first sip or two, I realized that all the old bastards around me were unrepentant drunkards and definitely regulars -- the alcohol was seeping out of their burly, gnarly, sore-encrusted forearms -- and I was, though amusing at first, basically unwelcome. They started grunting weird shit in German and  it was like the walls were caving in on me and everything went topsy-turvy and everybody was glowering and poking and shit like I was a fresh piece of ass chunked into the county jail in the middle of the night. Fuck that! I was like, hell no, I gotta get out of here. Of course, I just wanted to sit and drink my massive beer in the cool darkness and maybe, no, definitely get something to eat. She brought me my change and I CHUGGED that motherfucker! I shuffled (quickly) outside to see all the yuppies sitting out in the market leisurely and nice in the sun and everything came down on me at once -- the beer, the jetlag, the hunger, the sun, the disorientation, all that mess. My knees went wobbly and I almost fell on my ass. I almost crawled to the train station and got one of those mozzarella, tomato, and basil sandwiches that are ubiquitous in European train stations and a few beers and stumbled back to my hotel room, took a bath, drank some more beer, and crashed the hell out.

Other places I went in German-speaking Europe had objectively better beer (Czech Republic is amazing), but I'll always have a soft spot for that Munich Helles. SO, when my pal said that was the new Shiner, I decided I better try it. It's pretty good. It's in the same ballpark as what I had in Southern Germany, but it's not as sharp or fresh or amazing. Still, it's the kind of beer I would just assume drink most of the time. Brits run down lager and I very much look forward to going there and trying their beer, but this sort of thing would be my everyday beer if I had my druthers. Mighty fine!

And to think, we've got it up here in Hunstville, a place that's never seen the Black Lager or whatever they're calling it.

Great story, baron.  You can run into some odd drunks in Germany, especially in train stations at 7 or 8 in the morning (not that this only applies to Germany...!).
And if you want beer, you have to come to Britain, no question;  not only the 'native' beers, which are the best, but access to lots of other great ones from all over the Continent.

For the record,

I believe you call that a caprese sandwich;  an Insalata Caprese is a salad with buffalo mozzarella (fresh), basil and tomatoes from the area around Naples in Italy.  [/Mario Batali impression]

Cool story.  Clearly you had an excuse, but I bet you aren't the first foreigner that Muncheners (Munchkins?) have seen in trouble after their first bier.

The Campaign for Real Ale beardies and their ilk poo-poo lager.  Personally, I like to have choice and there's nothing better after (or during) a game of cricket on a hot day than a lager-top: which is a pint with a dash of Sprite (not to be confused with lager 'n' lime, which is for girls and/or nonces).

I think it goes in this order.  Free beer, OPB (other people's beer) and then cold beer.
