Void Related Matter - Geography Game
« on: February 14, 2008, 04:26:59 pm »
Not sure if this one has been posted here in the past.  Pretty fun little geography game that I ran across today(fun as opposed to working anyways).  Not too hard till level 10ish (out of 12).  Not too sharp on Africa...

Scored a 415850, lvl 10, IQ of 116 my first time through.  Probably will go back and try it again later.

Have fun...

Fun game.  Crapped out at level 7, needing 37,500 points to move on I scored 37,459.  Missing Santiago, Chile by 5,000Km didn't help...

Here are just a few of the key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers - can you see how incredible this is going to be?

This is a great game. I usually get all the way through it or real close. What fucks me up are the tiny island countries in the Pacific. I can guess wrong on one of those and be 10k miles off.

How the hell did you do that, by the way? Chile is that skinny little son of a bitch way yonder over on the Pacific coast of South America. Look for the long, skinny country. Can't miss it. Close your left eye, stick out your tongue and tap the cursor right in the middle of that motherscratcher and you should be within 100 km of it.

Now someone tell me where the fuck Vanuatu is.

My favorite is when they ask for some obscure city in one of those god forsaken Balkan countries. Yeah, dude, like I know where the fuck Podgorica Montenegro is. Just find what used to be Yugoslavia and click somewhere up in all that mess and whaddaya know, you're just 120 km away from good old Podgorica!

It told me to find Mali and I thought it was an island in the South Pacific. Turns out it's in West Africa. I missed by 15,000 km and the game immediately sent me to down to the minors.

No kidding; had no clue on a couple in Australia, a couple in Russia (one I picked in the West, it was way over on the Kamchatka Pen), and 2 in Norway of all places.  I'll try it again later.

I made it to level 11 too ... overcoming a miss-click on level 10 where I hit antarctical instead of someplace i actually knew in africa.  Small cities in large countries (like Australia) make it tough.

Total score 501,990 traveler IQ 125.

Is it possible to be addicted after one "hit"?

All Australian cities, save Adelaide and Perth, are on the east coast.  Ayres rock is just a little west of dead centre.  Santiago is not in Australia.

And Santiago is not particularly small, either.  Probably the first clue, though, was that it was listed as "Santiago, Chile"

And as for the "east coast" question, Port Arthur turns out to be in Tasmania instead of northern Queensland (I was thinking Fort Douglas or something, I guess) ... that's a pretty fur piece.

OK ... Second try and I got to level 12.  WOW.  Who'd a thunk that there was an island in Norway at about 75 degrees south lattitude?  That and a brain cramp on Brunei left me with about 47000 and a total score of 569,413, IQ of 132.

I gotta go to work.  :-(

A colleague of mine just breezed through to level 12.  It helps that he's English, grew up in Africa and Australia, has since lived in Canada and the US, and is a geography-savant.  He got fucked over by a Norwegian Island that's just off the north shore of Antarctica - biggest miss I've ever seen!  Just under 13,000Km.  He failed to complete level 12 but amassed 525k, 127 IQ.

Poor fucker isn't going to get any work done today.

Awesome game. I just got to level 12 (535,136, Traveler IQ 128). It's a bunch of cities you never heard of and can't pronounce in Russia. So even if you get the country right, you can still be off by thousands of kilometers.

Part of my problem is that I have a huge monitor, and with such a high resolution the stupid map is about the size of a postage stamp. It's hard to pinpoint the small places. Trying to find Easter Island really fucked me too.

Can't you just change your monitors resolution?  Sacrificing everything else you do for bragging rights in this game is a small price to pay.

Major cities and Ayres Rock are cake.  Those Australian islands by Indonesia threw me for a loop as well as a couple of places in the north.

First time, got to level 10 and then bombed!  I screwed up on the Asian major cities.  I loved that the feedback I kept getting was how great a human being I was for clicking so quickly.  Now I think I was too smitten by that feedback that I didn't take my time when it got harder.

I blame me for being seduced by the affirmation.

This game made me realize that I know fuck-all about African geography.

I did hit Liechtenstein square on the nose though, only 22 km away.

Africa kills me.

Me, too.  I was afraid to admit my inexcusable ignorance of the geopolitical boundaries of that continent for fear I'd end up in a Jason Whitlock column some kind of way.

If nothing else, I will be forever indebted to this game for learning where the fuck East Timor is.  After putting it on the west coast of (you guessed it) Africa about 7 times, I finally got it straight.  Also, when the fuck did Brunei change its name?  And calling Kenya "O.D.G.C.K." or whatever is bullshit.  As well as "San Juan, Caribbean."  I knew where that one was, but I could picture some poor bastard trying to figure out where "Caribbean", the country, is.

Level 11 is the best I can do.  And I still don't know where Vanautu is.

Oh, my closest click was 5 km from somewhere in Turmenistan.  Totally by chance.  The only former USSR countries I know for sure are Belarus and the Baltic countries.  All those Stans look the same to me.

There's also Pyongyang, DPRK.

With this being a Summer Olympic year, try the flags of the world geography game.  I am Oceania's bitch.

So if any of us wants to fuck with you we just need to keep this thread near the top?  How long can you resist?

Damn!  This thing is addictive.  Finished level 12 again with 627,220 and an IQ of 138.  I missed Easter Island by a day and still can't keep that french canadian island out of the carribean.  I ran into a bunch of brand new ones this time, though.  And only missed Edinburgh Castle by 2KM.

north of New Zealand ... I changed planes there one time.  It was like landing inside a prison courtyard, but you could hear the surf outside.  The submachineguns served to discourage exploration, though.

What is GITMO?

I'm stuck there too and for the same sad reasons.

Me too,  I have made it past one time and then you get Africa.  Man does that make you feel stupid when they start showing flags of African nations and you are just randomly clicking.  One even had the freakin name of the country on the flag and I still missed it (granted it was a small island off the eastern coast of Africa)

I wasted too much time this weekend playing this game.
Always ready to go to a game.
