Want to own your very own minor league pitcher?
« on: January 28, 2008, 08:58:02 am »
Here's your chance.  Randy Newsom, in the Cleveland organization, is selling 4% of his future major league salary for $20/share, with 2500 total shares for sale.

He's either not very good or not very smart.

He may not be very good (i.e. his ceiling might not be very high) but he's not offering very much.  To wit:  $16 per 1 million of salary per  share.  Multiply by 2500 and you get $40K.   Pocket change.

He would have to make $62.5 Million in his career for you to make $1000.

Heck he would have to make $1.25 Million in his career for you to break even on the investment of $20.

i hope someone has talked to him about what a "private offering" is under securities law.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

This is more fleshed out at slate.com http://www.slate.com/id/2182824

This is an MLB-approved plan, and is not much different than staking a poker player at the World Series.

Newsom is a 25 years old, AA reliever with a fastball around 83 mph, and doesn't even figure in John Sickel's 2008 Baseball Prospect Book (1000+ players reviewed). His ceiling is
