i remember traveling in hot springs maybe three years ago around new years, and while listening to the radio two things struck me: 1. a classic rock station's slogan (paraphrase though not too far off) "your favorite rock hits from the 60's 70's and 80's-- without all the objectionable words." 2. around the time i was travelling, nick saban quit LSU to coach the miami dolphins, and as a result, the big news in town was the purely unfounded speculation-based fear that houston nutt would leave arkansas to go to lsu. the classic rock station was having people call in and comment on it between songs! and this was not a regular rock and roll sports call-in show or anything else like that, but it was just such big news that they put this call-in commenting in the short space normally reserved for "alright and that was styx, styx will be coming to the hot springs rec arts center on febraury 15th... now here's another classic hit by john fogerty"
I live in Hot Springs, and the classic rock station still does the "no obscene lyrics and no foul-mouthed DJs" bullshit. So does one of the Clearchannel classic rock stations out of Little Rock. The morning show DJs can be racist, but they just can't cuss. Whenever I hear the "no obscene lyrics" ads, it reminds me to change the channel. These dumbass rules also lead to fucked-up versions of classic songs:
"We've been up and down this highway, haven't seen a dad-gum thing."
"Good times and riches, some bruises and stitches, I've seen more than I can recall."
I really need to get XM in my new vehicle. With baseball season coming up that should be plenty of motivation.
