Movie Day(non bb)
« on: December 21, 2007, 09:09:03 am »
Hey last day before Christmas break and I want to show a movie to my 10th grade Geometry class last block. Just wanted to see if anybody had suggestions or favorites?

Quiet is a nessecity,(Christmas party last night), if they learned something it would be nice but not a deal breaker if they don't.

I'm thinking it's going to be hard to get them to voluntarily read Euclid's Elements.

I think you also should consider how long the class is.  Tron would be a great movie, but not sure you can finish it during one class.  IF you can, I think it would even allow you to pawn it off as "illustrating Geometry", and thus not just blowing off the class time.  Got to keep up appearances after all.

That and it might actually keep a 10th graders attention better than some of the other options.  Then again... I have no idea what 10th graders are into so...

Girls are into themselves and the boys are into the girls.  Primarily, pretty much.

So you need a movie that will keep the attention span of both, meaning you need the romantic story with a mix of action.  Hard to do, but if the boys were smart about it, take the little action in the movie they can and trade off for being sensitive and into the storyline and come across as "so cute, did you see him cry" type of guys.  It's what a playah would do.

Watch your total guy film later, this is business.

We watched Stand and Deliver around Christmas in my high school calculus class, though it took several days to get it all in. I guess the teacher was done for the semester early. At least it was math-related.

When we had days like this in school, our science teacher would play poker with us.

And Zapped is not an appropriate movie for a teacher to show students.  Some nudity, lots of pot growing on school premises, and Scatman Crothers.

It's probably too late now, but I recommend something like "The Man in the Iron Mask" (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu, Gabrielle Byrne) or "Three Musketeers" (Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, Tim Curry, Chris O'Donnell) or "Count of Monte Cristo" (Guy Pearce, Richard Harris, James Caviezel).  None of these are "classic movies."  But they are based on classic books (so I guess you can make some argument that they are educational) they have stars who the youth of today might still find relevant, they are exciting, and maybe they will inspire one of your students to actually read one of these books.

Thanks for all the input, I went with "Stand and Deliver" math related and a good story and most important I found it at blockbuster.
Although I love the "Princess Bride" it was the 1st movie my wife and I rented when we were dating, I'm not sure 10th grade boys could see the genuis of it.

Are you trying to say that Scatman Crouthers isn't appropriate for 10th graders?  What about the Shining?

Any Patrick Swayze film, except for "Dirty Dancing."

If you're feeling patriotic, go with "Red Dawn."  If you're in a festive mood, then go with "Road House."  If you're feeling like a Kentucky hillbilly trying to avenge his brother's death at the hands of Chicago mobsters, then go with "Next of Kin."

You really can't go wrong with Swayze.
