Logistics questions
« on: December 13, 2007, 04:29:48 pm »
How does baseball print however many copies of a 409 page report without it leaking to the press ahead of time?  You're telling me that wherever that with all the resources at ESPN's fingertips, they can't find some 16 year old kid and give him a bag of weed (oh, the irony) and a six pack of beer to print them an extra copy and slide it over?  Just seems odd.

(Then there's always the possibility that they had a gentleman's agreement not to leak it ahead of time, but I find that hard to believe.)
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

They couldn't leak Harry Potter ahead of time.  You think they were going to get the Mitchell Report?

Mitchell made the MLB guys come to his office earlier this week to read a copy they could not leave with.  Kudos to his office for avoiding the temptations of the circus

I was actually thinking about that exact case.  It just seems like there probably is some process set up for anticipated books like this that big time publishers (100s of thousands, if not millions of copies) use for books like this.  I would think it would be harder for a one-off thing like the Mitchell report.

Plus, you've basically got amateurs going after Harry Potter.  It's not like CNN is trying to get a copy to post on their website.  ESPN, on the other hand, has a lot to gain from breaking this story.

Oh yeah, obviously they did a good job.  I'm just suprised they were able to.  Then again, maybe they printed all thousands of copies out in their own office and didn't bother with Kinko's.

ESPN has contracts with MLB.  Contracts that expire.

If you think more people are interested in the Mitchell than Harry Potter you're nuts.

Entertainment is no discriminator of men (and women).  People want their bread and circus, in whatever form it comes in and this, just like Harry Potter, is high entertainment value.

Right.  They don't want to really piss off MLB.  They just resort to petty stuff like not allowing ESPN.com to post links to news stories on MLB.com.  I'm just guessing that's the reason that people like Buster Olney (who I suspect is smart enough to know better) persist in linking to that crap the Comical publishes, rather than Footer's stories.  On the other hand, maybe Olney is just afraid of the competition.

Harry Potter leaked.  Some guy took a picture of every page and it was on the web five or six days before the official release.

Not more people, but more resources.  Or, it seems to me to be more resources.  There's not a giant machine behind getting books early (that I know of) b/c it's rare that there's THAT many people that just can't wait for a book to release.  ESPN (and SI and probably other outlets) have a lot of $$$ from other areas and a big motive to get the report.

If you've read anything I've written on this site, you would know I know nothing.  Zero.  It just suprises me that this didn't leak.  It doesn't mean there isn't info that would make this obvious to a normal thinking human.  My dumb ass just isn't seeing it.

Not every page. Just the ToC and the first chapter.

Yeah. I'm a Potter fan. Got a problem with it?

I would assume that the copies were either printed at DLA Piper (because law firms make money on copies) or they were printed at an outsourcing copy center like Ikon.  Ikon (or whoever DLA Piper uses) isn't going to let a copy go because if they did, they would lose the business -- not smart to lose a client as big as DLA Piper.  And if the copies were printed in-house, you can be damn sure that there were lots of people watching.

Oddly related nugget...I used to work at a hazardous waste incerator facility.  As part of our "community outreach", we used to incinerate drugs confiscated by the local law enforcement agencies.  One might think it would be easy to snag a few bales of weed or a drum of heroin when no one was looking, but on those days, the place was a fortress with guards with machine guns standing over everyone.  The moral...if it's a big enough deal for you, you don't let it leak.

Were you really burning drums of heroin? Like 50 gallon drums?

Yep.  Everything went into a drum then into the incinerator.  For anyone who ever wondered what everntually happened to their dope when they got busted, that's it.
