Just a Thought
« on: December 12, 2007, 11:58:50 pm »
There was some talk in the monstrous thread below about possibly trading Pence for Lincecum.  Obviously, even if the Astros were willing to trade Pence, the Giants are out of the outfield market.  But I wonder if the Astros were willing to make Pence available, whether they could get Bay and Ian Snell from the Pirates.  The Pirates have been talking about trading both.

Good Lord!  Do you guys realize who the owner of the Houston Astros is?  If so, anyone who trades Hunter Pence is not long for a job as the GM of his team.

With all due respect to Mr. Patton, he's no Pence.

Was Joe Morgan revered prior to his departure?  I was 9 and living three states away in those days, so I'm asking.  I gather the following wasn't as intense as in those days, though that might not be the right word to use.

What about Glenn Davis?  The return on his trade was sure good.

Nolan wasn't a trade, but letting HIM leave was about as popular.

EDIT:
If the organization WERE to trade him, would that suggest that Pam had been neutered?

Again, if one only follows the Pence story last year, one finds out quickly that he is the wonder boy for this team.  He is the story that sells and marketing salivates over such a guy (hint: Biggio and Bagwell are no longer Houston Astros, that is key to marketing this team).  Troy Patton is nowhere near the marketing/business darling that Gunther has proven out to be.

You're all thinking like baseball men and when it comes to Pence and making a reasonable trade, that is not enough to think this whole thing through.  Unless you want Pam Gardner to come to your house and scratch your eyes out, I would say it would be wise to table any and all "Hunter Pence for...." trade talk.

If you're thinking tickets... Pence plays every day, while Patton's only drawing a crowd every fifth day. That could potentially make/have made a difference.
