The Astros and Giants are among the teams that have expressed interest in Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada, sources have told SI.com...

The Orioles are believed to be interested in outfielder Michael Bourn (acquired from the Phillies in the Brad Lidge deal), shortstop Adam Everett and other Astros prospects.
Link

To me this sounds like the Orioles approached the Astros.

Hmmm. If there is one grain of truth to this it completely undermines the apparant direction Smith/Wade was taking this ship.

That's why I thought the Orioles initiated this.  In the reporting on the last attempt to deal with the Astros, the Orioles were apparently not interested in Everett.  I wouldn't expect the Astros to lead with him, and Bourn makes no sense.  But then there's this article from the Baltimore Sun

At this point, a team source said, the Orioles haven't gotten overwhelming interest in Tejada, a four-time All-Star. Defensive concerns -- poor range at shortstop and the uncertainty that he can make the transition to third base -- declining power numbers and his salary ($26 million over the next two seasons) have severely hurt Tejada's trade value, said two baseball executives, who requested anonymity. ...

The Orioles' asking price for Tejada -- two high-level prospects -- scared off the St. Louis Cardinals, who instead chose to sign free-agent shortstop Cesar Izturis. Seeking a third baseman, the Giants have also been interested in Tejada, but they aren't looking to deal young pitchers Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum and the talent in their system is relatively thin.

Deja vu all over again.  Next thing you know we'll be hearing the Orioles are offering Oswalt to the Mets.  Expect a bunch of BS from the Baltimore Sun tomorrow.

I think interest in Tejada has, and rightfully so, waned to almost nil. That would explain why Balt.  may "settle" for a SS coming off of a busted leg and an unproven, yet skilled, rookie. That is also why SmithWade will be very weary of this deal. They degree to which they coveted Bourn, they won't include him in a deal for a quickly declining "juicer".

A juice-free Tejada is not a good thing.

Note that he starts by saying the Astros are interested in Tejada, and then says that the Orioles are interested in those players.  Nothing states nor implies that the Astros would ever make that swap.

Right, and Wade, in his interview with the Chron regarding Matsui says,

"...we feel being as strong as we possibly can up the middle defensively is important for us. The addition of Kaz in that respect was very, very important to us."
Link

"very, very", he sounds serious.  Trading Everett would kick a hole in the middle defense.  A concern that seems to transcend OPS, OBP, or even BS, at least for WadeSmith.

I can't help but hope, though, that the Astros might be able to turn the negotiations towards Eric Bedard. He's the Orioles that I assume that the Astros covet the most, although I doubt they can put together the kind of package that Baltimore would want. (Burke, Scott, and a prospect or two probably won't cut it because I don't think we'd give up the kind of propects they'd want, although I'd be thrilled if it did.)

Baltimore is a mess, they aren't trading Bedard.

Probably not, but seeing his name on various bogus "rumor mills" got my mind to wandering. A guy can wish...

I know, but it leaves little doubt who approached who in these conversations.   I would stay away from dealing with Angelos if I was another team.   You think mclane meddles too much, he's nothing compared to Angelos.

Next thing you know, the Mets will be reportedly involved. Except Lastings Milledge has already been traded.

Let's throw Roy in, and sounds like a fair deal to me.

Bourn and Everett for Tejada?  That would create more questions than answers and this young management team simply does not need this.  They need to be in SP mode and persueing it a aggressively.

I took that to mean the "new" management team of Cooper and Wade and a few of their subordinates (i.e. young in terms of current tenture)
