OWA Official Song
« on: October 24, 2007, 12:12:18 pm »
I was driving home late last night and popped on the radio.  Local station has Weezel on, the legendary DJ from the old HFS here in DC.  As he's chatting, I pick up the Blackberry and logon to the TZ.  Right as it loads up, Weezel spins up "Road to Nowhere" by the Talking Heads and in that one, divine moment, the official BFT/OWA/TZ song is codified, at least in my mind.

What would your pick for the official TZ song?

No, that's not a personal commentary, Dave!

Wasted Days and Wasted Nights

God bless Doug Sahm.  Way down below the Beltway, where I wanna be, he may be. . .

"I've loved Girls all over the country
Even met a few around the world
One thing I'll never forget my mama
Down in Houston, Texas

Oh-oooooh-ooh Houston, Texas

I worked the clubs in Galveston
Couldn’tn'a been more than fifteen
Went wild when one of those bawdy house mamas
Said, 'Little boy, come on to Houston, live with me.'

Oh-oooooh-ooh Houston, Texas
Oh-oooooh-ooh Houston, Texas

Houston chicks
Get their kicks
Out of
Taking care, care yeah, oooh,
Of the man that they love

Oh-oooooh-ooh Houston, Texas
Oh-oooooh-ooh Houston, Texas
Oh-oooooh-ooh Houston, Texas

If I live my life over
Don’t you know where I wanna be?
Somewhere, somewhere out on the outskirts of Houston
Oh, Houston girl, take care of me

Oh-oooooh-ooh Houston, Texas
Oh-oooooh-ooh Houston, Texas
Oh-oooooh-ooh Houston, Texas

Maybe "London Calling".

Good one:

Well it's cold over here, and I swear,
I wish they'd turn the heat on.
...
My mind keeps roamin', my heart keeps longin'
to be home in a Texas bar.

Believe it or not, but this is my attitude after a few hours back in London.
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

"London Homesick Blues"

I don't know if it's the OWA anthem, but it's definitely got a couple of candidates for the OWA motto:

Quote
Cause when a Texan fancies he'll take his chances,
chances will be taken, now that's for sure.

Quote
and when you open your mouth,
you always seem to put your foot there.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Bright night, midnight and I'm feelin' strong
Jim Beam givin' me the right to do wrong
I'm givin' you exactly one minute
To find a clean dress and get your ass in it

Know what I'm gonna do
I'm gettin' drunk with or without you
I'm gettin' drunk with or without you

I'm tired of sittin' round this chicken shack hell
Gonna hit the bar, gonna drink my fill
Got a vacant lot in the middle of my belly
Good times are few and I need many

Maybe you can come along to
I'm gettin' drunk with or without you
I'm gettin' drunk with or without ...

Maybe we should stay at home
Leave all's well enough alone
Call our mothers on the phone
"Hello Momma!  Ever find a $20 bill underneath a stack of trashcans?"

My favorite bar is down the road
I'm gonna drink you pretty you beautiful toad
All the while there's a ringing in my ear
There's a worm in the bottle screaming "Get me outta here!"

Know what I'm gonna do
I'm gettin' drunk with or without you
I'm gettin' drunk with or without you

Know what I'm gonna do
I'm gettin' drunk with or without you
I'm gettin' drunk with or without you

Is this where I sidle up and say, "them ur fightin' words..."?

I was born in New York.  1/2 my family is from there.  Most of my reporting chain from work is there.  I have almost no ability or desire to comprehend the Yankee mindset.  Life is too short.

I vote for "I'm a Fool to Care" by George Jones and Gene Pitney.   Also, "Your Mind is on Vacation" by Mose Allison is occasionally appropriate.

But in answer to the question...

Well it's a strange old game you learn it slow
One step forward and it's back you go
You're standing on the throttle
You're standing on the brake
In the groove 'til you make a mistake

Sometimes you're the windshield
Sometimes you're the bug
Sometimes it all comes together baby
Sometimes you're just a fool in love
Sometimes you're the Louisville Slugger
Sometimes you're the ball
Sometimes it all comes together
Sometimes you're gonna lose it all

You gotta know happy - you gotta know glad
Because you're gonna know lonely
And you're gonna know sad
When you're rippin' and you're ridin'
And you're coming on strong
You start slippin' and slidin'
And it all goes wrong because

Sometimes you're the windshield
Sometimes you're the bug
Sometimes it all comes together baby
Sometimes you're just a fool in love
Sometimes you're the Louisville Slugger
Sometimes you're the ball
Sometimes it all comes together
Sometimes you're gonna lose it all

One day you got the glory and then you got none
One day you're a diamond and then you're a stone
Everything can change in the blink of an eye
So let the good times roll before we say goodbye because

Sometimes you're the windshield
Sometimes you're the bug
Sometimes it all comes together baby
Sometimes you're just a fool in love
Sometimes you're the Louisville Slugger
Sometimes you're the ball
Sometimes it all comes together
Sometimes you're gonna lose it all

Sometimes you're the windshield
Sometimes you're the bug
Sometimes it all comes together baby
Sometimes you're just a fool in love

Sometimes you're the windshield
Sometimes you're the bug
Sometimes it all comes together baby
Sometimes you're just a fool in love

Done by Mary Chapin Carpenter, and re-recorded quite nicely by Dire Straits.

Deep in the Heart of Texas.  I'm sentimental, and I like it as part of the 7th inning stretch.

I love going to Round Rock games and hearing "Cotton-Eyed Joe" during the stretch. You just don't get that everywhere.

Personally, I think this should be the OWA song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCU81RKn5MQ

I play in a band
We're the best in the land
We're big in both Chelsea and France
I play one mean guitar and then score at the bar
There's a line of chicks waiting for their chance
So come on now honey, I'll make you feel pretty
These other gals mean nothing to me
Let's finish these drinks and be gone for the night
'Cause I'm more than a handfull you'll see

[CHORUS:]

So kiss me I'm shitfaced
I'm soaked I'm soiled and brown
in the trousers she kissed me
And I only bought her one round

I can bench press a car
I'm an ex football star
with degrees from both harvard and yale
Girls just can't keep up
I'm a really love machine
I've had far better sex while in jail
I designed the Sears tower
I make two grand an hour
I cook the world's best duck flambe
I'll take the pick of the LITTER
And girls jockey for me
I don't need these lines to get laid

[CHORUS]

I'm the man of the night
A real ladies delight
See, my figure was chiseled from stone
One more for the gal then I'll escort her home
Come last call, I'm never alone
I own a house on the hill with a red water bed
It puts Hugh Hefner's mansion to shame
With girls by the pool and italian sports cars
I'm just here in this dump for the gain

[CHORUS x2]

Ahh, xxxx it. Who am I shittin'?

I'm a pitiful SIGHT
And I ain't all that bright
I'm definitly not chiseled from stone
I'm a cheat and a liar
No woman's desire
I'll probably die cold and alone

But just give me a chance
Cause deep down inside
I swear I got a big heart of gold
I'm a monogamous man
No more one night stands
Come on, Honey let me take you home

Boom!
