Pinwheel: Amaro leading candidate, may be named today
« on: September 19, 2007, 11:02:18 am »
Quote
The Astros could have a new general manager in place by the end of the day. Drayton McLane will meet with his staff to discuss the 11 candidates amid reports there'd be no second round of interviews. Inside the industry, Ruben Amaro Jr. is believed to be the frontrunner. Fox 26 reported that the new GM likely would come from a group that includes Amaro, Ed Wade and Jim Beattie. One theory has Amaro coming as GM and Wade as a senior advisor.

From his blog.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I thought they might go with Amaro, he's a good face man.  I like the senior advisor idea.  Don't know if I like the candidate.  Rangers, Red Sox, Devil Rays, (others?) did this.

Justice has nobody in the organization giving him information.  "Inside the industry" who's that?  The Pittsburgh Post Gazette?

The Houston Astros reportedly are close to naming Ruben Amaro Jr. their new general manager. That could happen as early as today. Amaro, Philadelphia's assistant general manager, was thought to be under some consideration by the Pirates, but the team did not seek permission to interview him.

It is believed that Ed Wade, who worked with Amaro in Philadelphia as the Phillies' general manager, will accompany Amaro to the Astros as a senior adviser. Link

FWIW, despite what the media is reporting, my friend feels that it's probably between Wade and Logan White.

Amaro is a possibility, but the feeling in many of the offices is that it's Wade.

I heard Wade and then Amaro in that order of consideration right now.

Since you guys have inside info, would the notion of Wade as a senior adviser to Amaro jivy?

Not sure who you would consider "higher" in the food chain in that arrangement.

Gerry Hunsicker is a senior adviser to the young GM at Tampa Bay.  Larry Luccino is the senior adviser to Theo Epstein since day one of his hire.  Daniels at Texas has a senior adviser as well.  I would think (and do not know) that the notion of a senior adviser only would apply if they felt Ruben Amaro Jr. was the leading candidate but would need some help in day to day operations and dealing with issues in the day to day grind of being a GM.  If Wade is the leading candidate, there is no way he needs a senior adviser.  So I think Amaro has an actual deficit on his part if he needs to be helped by a senior adviser like a young Daniels needs.

Hence why Wade seems to be a more logical choice.

The latest, not today Ortiz reports,

Drayton McLane met with his top three baseball advisers for about four hours to discuss the 11 candidates for the vacant general manager’s position today, and he expects to reconvene with the group in the morning.

McLane said it was a “little aggressive” to assume that a general manager could be named by Thursday, but he remained hopeful of having a general manager in place by this weekend.

McLane, president of baseball operations Tal Smith, former president of business operations Bob McClaren, who is now a consultant, and current president of business operations Pam Gardner all sat in on the meeting.

Last time that group got together, the Houston Astros announced the hiring of Jimah Williams to replace Larry Dierker as the manager of the team.  Made Gerry Hunsicker cry.

Granato said this morning that Wade is in town today.  Infer what you will.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Amaro, Jr.?
