Friday Non-BB/Beer Thread
« on: August 31, 2007, 03:18:45 pm »
i've got a two-parter here....

the non-bb:
want to take the husband to new braunfels in a few weeks for a birthday weekend getaway - suggestions, please, on places to stay?  this houston girl hasn't been to new braunfels since, well, it's been too damn long.  i checked around all the internets, but haven't had much luck narrowing it down.

the beer:
he's a fan.  i love to taste different beers, but am not as well-versed in picking out new brands to try.  i'm going to spec's tonight to find something that makes having his mom here for the weekend a little bit more enjoyable.  lately he's been on the shiner hefeweizen, and he did enjoy the hell out of the 98 (i'm proud to say i turned him on to it b/c of owa).  any recommendations?

i defer to you, ladies and gentleman.

Real Ale just started bottling Fireman's 4.  The beer is considered to be a 'blonde ale'.  It's my favorite beer out there right now.  If you buy Fireman's 4 in the bottle, i'd drink it out of a glass.  Tastes a little bit better than directly out of the bottle

My wife and I stay here whenever we go to NB.  Historic Hotel, with microbrew in the bar.  Bar usually has live music on the weekends.

Also, if you guys are into steak (good, expensive steak) I HIGHLY recommend Myron's Steakhouse, which is walking distance from the Faust.

St. Arnold's comes out with Divine Reserves every now and again.  They're on #4.  It's a "wee heavy".  It's expensive (~$15 for a complete six pack).  But it is one of the best beers I've had in a while and will put you on your ass (9.5% ABV).  Spec's may have singles available if you don't want to get an entire six pack.

I'm with Jim on Fireman's #4.  Their Pale Rye Ale is pretty good, though.

Full Sail Amber and Halo IPA are both pretty good.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale if you're looking for a beer that is a light Ale. Nice smooth taste, very fruity.

It's my go-to beer for day-to-day. I also like the Full Sail Pale Ale.

May be a little touristy, but Mrs Limey and I like to stay at the Gruene Mansion Inn and eat/drink at the Grist Mill.  Fabulous chicken fried steak.  It's not quite New Braunfels...

Gotta second that. Their chicken fried steak is so damn good, best I've ever had. Floating down the river all day, then going to the Grist Mill, then checking out some of the town's stores before listening to live music at Gruene Hall with several longnecks makes for one hell of a Saturday/Sunday. The list of musicians that've played there is pretty impressive. Only about 5 minutes from New Braunfels too.

I thought we've all been over this before.  There is no such place as Gruene, TX.

We always rent a house in Canyon Lake then drive in to go tubing.  Gruene Onion Grill is always on our list of places to eat when we visit.

Don't miss Naegelin's bakery--it's just up the street from the Faust.  My wife hates it, but it was the first place I ever remember seeing bread that wasn't white.  It's been there forever, it's really cheap, and it's one of the great breakfast bakeries.  Thought my wife disagrees.

When we go there, we keep meaning to try Adobe Verde, but we never do because we keep ending up at the Grist Mill.
