Hell, Astrocreep thinks the poem is disturbing.

I laughed so hard coffee came out of my tear ducts instead of my nose. I'm in horrible, horrible pain right now.

Disturbing, yet refreshing.  I posted the poem in the office as a motivational tool.  So far, we've had numerous acts of copulation and a stabbing.  Just like a night at Tropicana.

Sounds like a Friday night at my old local, just without the copulation.

Excellent work, sir.

I am amused by this board's fascination with Whataburger.

I am amused by this board's fascination with Whataburger.

It's six months of slow torture having to watch Whataburger commercials on every Astros broadcast, when I live out of state and can't have a delicious Double Whataburger with Cheese. The closest Whataburger to me is in Texarkana.

I also can't get Dairy Queen Country Baskets with steak fingers. Outside of Texas they use chicken fingers, those bastards.

About a year ago, I was driving a part of Tampa I rarely go to. I was stopped at a light and out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a building under construction that had an orange and white roof. "It can't be," I thought as I did a u-turn to get a better look. "Sumbitch, a Whataburger!" I drove past once a week until that fucker opened.

They have Whataburger in Tampa now?? What part of town? I'll have to tell my sister.

West Hillsborough, by the Hooters. I never go to that part of town as I live and work near downtown. I now make a point to get out there once or twice a month.

To be fair, my sister doesn't live THAT close to it, she lives just east of Dale Mabry and just a little bit north of Steinbrenner's house.  But hell, if you're a displaced Texan and someone puts a Whataburger within a 15 mile radius of you, it is close enough.

I'm trying to remember an Astros farmhand pitcher there last year.

Sapp, Towles, and Iorg are their web guy's best guess at who'll be there.  Iorg had major elbow surgery this year.  There's no way to make an educated guess this far out.

Our local (pop. >2,000) DQ closed their doors recently, a sad day for me. The new drive in put'em out of business. So now it's the Sonic Booms® or nothing.

Now that's what I'm talking about, right there. I used to buy Country Baskets two at a time, so I'd have an extra one for later. Hmmm, Mapquest says it's 118 miles to Texarkana ...

I ate many Country Baskets and Beltbusters at that DQ on my way to and from college. But that was so long ago, Craig Biggio wasn't even an Astro yet.

I went to college out of Texas and the first time I ordered a Hungerbuster (smaller than a Beltbuster) up there, they looked at me like I had a horn in the middle of my forehead. They had no idea what I was talking about.

Now living in the Mid-Atlantic region, I see Sonic, Dairy Queen, and Whataburger commercials during Astros games and we don't have those places here. Actually, we do have DQ, but all of the emphasis is on the dairy. It's basically an ice cream stand.

I still can't get used to ordering a cheeseburger and being asked if I mean a "sandwich or a sub" at most of the local establishments.

Manzella was the only other Astro prospect there and he only played 3 games before he got hurt.  Here is the roster for 2006

As for the list of Iorg, Towles and Sapp.  Here is what the intro paragraph says:

Quote
While major league teams are still months away from designating players for the 2007 HWB season, we wanted to give the fans a glance at who might be headed to Hawaii. This list is unofficial and solely reflects the opinions of the HWB Web Editor which are based on the current performances of the players and the needs of their respective organizations.

I would hope Towles would be in Arizona personally.  Sapp might be there just so they can keep an eye on his training habits.

There are at least two Dairy Queens off the Beltway in Northern Virginia that serve decent burgers and fries, although I don't recall that they called them Hungerbusters or Beltbusters. I certainly don't remember them having steakfingers on the menu.

Yeah, outside of Texas it seems like DQ's are just ice cream stands now. Maybe in Texas too, I don't know.

That reminds me of a great DQ story though. In the early 90s I lived in a small town in eastern Montana, that had one DQ. The town's assistant fire chief lived down the alley and around the corner from DQ. He also had a dog (a dalmation, of course), that rode on the fire truck in parades. Anyway the dog, Norton, loved Blizzards. Every day he would run down the alley to the DQ, put his paws on the drive-thru window, and they'd give him a Blizzard. Once a week or so the guy would go to the Dairy Queen and settle up his dog's Blizzard tab.

I know someone who'll drive from Kingwood to Jersey Village just to get a pizza!

Where in Jersey Village is there pizza that good?

If you have to eat it with a knife and fork, it's not pizza.  If anywhere in it's description it says "Chicago", it's not pizza.  If it contains fruit other than tomatoes, it's not pizza.

Shit, I'd drive to Lakeland, maybe even Orlando, to get a Double Whataburger w/ cheese and jalapeños.

ETA: I have no idea why I wrote "Whopper."

The Whataburger in the tunnels in downtown Houston beckoned today, thanks to you guys. Plus, my new coworker who went with me had not only never had Whataburger, but he'd never had Shipley Donuts either, so we swung by there. There are now two donuts and a Whataburger apple pie waiting to be eaten on my desk. I figure that's somewhere around 1,500 calories of love.

See now, there's some closed-mindedness.  The joy of a cheesburger sub is that you don't waste all that time finishing your 1st cheesburger, *reaching down to pick up the 2nd*, then continuing to stuff your face.  It's all one smooth consuming move...

DQ up here is has never once sold a Steak Finger.  I would know if they did.  Burgers are an afterthought, really just a vehicle for moms to feel better about super-sizing their kids.  "Sure honey, you can have that XL Blizzard, just as soon as you finish your burger and fries".

Once you put it in a sub, doesn't it become some kind of mutant cheesesteak sandwich?

Only if you're an idiot when you order and ask for grilled onions and peppers.  Ask for it just like you do a normal cheeseburger.  Lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, condiment.  Enjoy.

FYI in case you are ever in the mid-Atlantic region, a bad cheeseburger sub will have the two round patties side-by-side.  The center will bend and fold under the strain of the weight at each end.  It's a shame when this happens in the all-important middle section where you need to maintain your stamina and composure for proper follow-through to the end of the sub.

Properly constructed cheesburger subs have patties that overlap in the middle providing for 1) superior sandwich stability and 2) a double-meaty surprise 1/2 way through the sub, right when you need it most.  The 2nd benefit is that patties big enough to overlap in the middle *and* extend to the far reaches of the rounded ends of the sub roll also stick out of the sides by a good 1/2" or so.  Beefy goodness in all directions.

Now, if I could only find a way to follow that up with some Steakfingers...

once upon a time when i was a new lawyer, i went to lunch at the Picadilly Cafeteria in downtown Austin. i was in line behind a lady who was an office-worker type and was eating with her friends/co-workers, it appeared. as she progressed through the line, she selected:

tossed salad with 1000 island dressing
chicken fried steak with cream gravy
mashed potatoes with brown gravy
fried okra
roll and butter
lemon meringue pie
iced tea
AND
sweet 'n low
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

In California you can't get steak fingers and you don't get gravy with your chicken fingers.  They give you a thing of ranch instead.  It's horrendous.

I always associate the inappropriate side of ranch dressing with Austin. When I was in high school I visited my brother at UT for a weekend of debauchery. We ordered a pizza from somewhere, Papa Johns probably, and when it arrived everyone started happily dumping the accompanying side of ranch on their slices. Fortunately, I was too hammered for it to bother me too much, but still today I've never figured that out, nor have I been in any other city where a pizza was delivered with sides of ranch, despite it happening on several subsequent visits to Austin.

Now, I grew up in San Antonio, a mere 90 miles away, and I never heard of pizza with a side of ranch dressing. That also was the day when I realized I still had a lot to learn about the man I had previously spent every day of my life getting into trouble with, because my brother really dug the pizza with ranch.

So my question for the resident Austinites: Is this normal or were the group of people I hung out with in Austin more fucked up than I already knew them to be?

Yup, it's normal. Pizza crusts go in the ranch. Ranch goes in the belly. Everyone wins.

I didn't know there's a Whataburger in the tunnels. The website says it's at Main & McKinney? I'll have to remember that when I'm having a burger craving for lunch.

One of the teenagers I mentor had never been to Whataburger in all her 15 years until last night. Maybe I was inspired by this thread to take here there, who knows. She dove right in and had that new Ranch House burger. Her response: a rather dazed, "Oh my God... can we come here again tomorrow?"

Here's a link for the burger portion of this thread.  The guy goes to various Mom and Pop burger joints and rates their burgers. http://www.texasburgerguy.com/

For the pizza portion of this thread, I'm in Kingwood, and so far the best that I can find is Double Daves in Atascocita.  They have what I like to call "ugly" pizza.  They pile the toppings on willy nilly instead of nice and neat, so the end result is kind of like a topping explosion if you will.  Pizza goodness splattered everywhere.  It's beautiful.  Also, they have the famous Peproni Rolls which you, of course, must dip in Ranch Dressing.

The best pizza in Houston is Brothers Pizza in Greenspoint Mall.  You laugh, but I tell ya, it's as good as it gets.  They have a couple of other locations, but they're not quite as good.  Still better than most though.  Lightyears better than that shit they serve at Papa John's.

I wasn't endorsing Papa John's so much as endorsing the concept of dipping food in a vat of grease euphemistically described as "garlic butter."

There's a place on Highway 6 between Memorial and the Katy Freeway called Manhattan Pizza that serves up great New York-style pies. It's run by a Yugoslavian family.

You may have heard this one before:  a buddy of mine was in Glasgow and went to watch a soccer match.  After the game, everyone piled into the local "chippie" (fish 'n' chip shop).  Behind the counter was a huge bubbling cauldron of grease, probably lard, in which they are cooking...everything.  Not sure in what decade the fat was last replaced, my mate looked around for anything other than fried food, and saw a large pizza.  He ordered a slice but, before his mortified brain could engage enough to stop them, they whisked up his slice and tossed it into the cauldron.  Came out a good inch thicker than when it went in, it did.

Ah, the old Glasgow diet. I think I traded in six years of my life for the six months I lived there. There was nothing that wouldn't be fried. My favorite after being out at the pubs all night was the fried sausage, which had an oddly sweet flavor to it. At least there was always plenty of McEwan's 80 shilling to wash it down with.

I just hate Papa John's.  I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would order from that place because even if you're totally desperate in a heroin addict needing his fix kind of way, there's probably a Domino's that will deliver.

Well, it's better than fried lard, I suppose.  We once had a German neighbor named Otto, who ate lard sandwiches.  He drank good beer though, even if he refused to refrigerate it.

Good to hear Brother's is still around.  I used to work at the Woodlands location when I was in high school.  Great family and a cool place to work.

Yeah, the Buck's Pizza we get around the corner from our house has the miniscule garlic-butterish vats of grease. Good stuff for the crust. The owner told me he wished he'd never heard of anyone dipping the crust in ranch and eating it, though, because now he can't eat pizza without ranch dressing. I told him as long as he still offered the miniscule garlic-butterish vats of grease, we'd still get along just fine.

But the DoubleDave's peproni rolls, dipped in ranch dressing, those are gooooood.

Years ago I had Fuzzy's Pizza. That was some good stuff.

Anybody still eat Star Pizza? Another one I haven't had in years...

Since we are all obligated to obey Matt's Rules of Pizza, (which as with anything Matt proclaims, is absolute) Fuzzy's (on Antoine) is the best I've had in town, with the Marghertia pie at Star a close second.

My brother-in-law advised me that fried here, in the States, even the deep south southern fried, is lite compared to Scotland fried.  I wouldn't be surprised to find his arterial walls were made entirely of pigfat.

I know this thread is already going all over the place, but if anyone finds themselves on I-40 in North Carolina, I highly recommend grabbing a burger and shake from Cook-Out. Excellent char-grilled burgers w/ chili, bacon, whatever, great fries, and about 40 different shakes. Make sure you get a spoon for the shake, a straw will do you no good. The Snickers shake is a classic but the fruit ones are also very good.

I've never had a Whataburger, but I have to go to Cook-Out every time I go home. So good (and open 'til 2 or so in the morning). Sorry, I had to share.

I literally grew up down the street (Gollihar @ Kostoryz...) from the original Whataburger, the first part of  their empire before leaving Corpus....a flagship that I can remember used to bottle their own Root Beer when I was very young...and in the mid-seventies had the supreme wet Double Double..the best thing after fishing.

Damn!!! Cook One!

Are you talking about the little hole-in-the-wall on Westheimer, not far off Montrose? I don't think it's there anymore. I have been to Thai Spice on Kelvin in Rice Village... pretty good, and it's got a lunch buffet with reasonable choices.

I lived in NC for 5 years, and though I don't remember the Cook-Out in particular, I must say they have some damn fine burger joints in the Tar Heel State.  The Char-Grill in Raleigh is worth the lunch time wait, especially on one of those beautiful NC spring/summer/fall days when you can sit outside and drool in anticipation.

Yes, central NC has some fine burgers.  Went to State for my 1st year of school, a fine year filled with some of my best boyhood memories.  State Baseball (and basketball) was hot at the time, good food all around and the highest per capita cuties in any region I've been in.  And, I've been all over...

Yeah, the Cook-Outs haven't been around for too long, maybe 14-15 years, and they started in Greensboro before popping up in Raleigh-Durham and elsewhere. I'd also be inclined to agree with Das' assesment of per-capita cuties in the Triangle (including Chapel Hill).

I agree with the cutie density.  However, there is no such place as "Raleigh-Durham".  There are two separate cities, one named "Raleigh" and one named "Durham".  A nit that I picked up on from living there.

Didn't mean to imply there was. In NC you do, of course, have Winston-Salem, one city that used to be two. And home of some damn fine Moravian Sugar Cake.

Just picking nits that irritate the locals.  Along the same lines, there is no city named "Tampa Bay", even though there is a generation of people who don't know otherwise.

And home of some damn fine Moravian Sugar Cake.

We throw at least 3 pounds of those away each year, not because we don't like them but because my father-in-law and his wife, who live in Lewisville, apparently think we are on a Moravian-sugar-cake-only diet and give some to us at every opportunity.

There, that sentence was not 756 words but I do believe I have the record for the day.

Sadly, I wasn't being facetious.  My wife had to make this other person actually look it up.

Then there was the discussion with another woman about the Minnesota bridge tragedy.  The discussion got around to inspections and repair budgets, and the other woman wondered why they didn't just do more inspections, etc.

Wife: Well, that would cost money.
Dimbulb: Ok, give them more money.
Wife: It's not in the budget.
Dimbulb: Ok, increase the budget.
Wife: There's no extra money floating around.
Dimbulb: Ok, get some.
Wife: That would require raising taxes.
Dimbulb: Why?
Wife: Because that's where the money comes from.
Dimbulb: You're kidding.

Have you gotten a chance to say that (or some similar saying) to your own kids? The first time I said something that sounded like something I hated hearing my parents say, I paused, then laughed out loud. I couldn't believe I was becoming them.

Spoken like someone who has no children.  There is often no reason for kids to cry when they do other than they aren't getting their way.

Gee, you don't think maybe it was a joke???  Cause everyone knows that just because someone doesn't have kids they haven't seen any little brats fall on the floor screaming.

Have you gotten a chance to say that (or some similar saying) to your own kids? The first time I said something that sounded like something I hated hearing my parents say, I paused, then laughed out loud. I couldn't believe I was becoming them.

My first was "As long as you're living under my roof". I never finished the sentence, as I was busy trying to figure out who the hell just said that. Surely not me.
"We live in a society of laws. Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies? For fun? Well, I didn't hear anybody laughing, did you?"

No kids here, but I hope to one day be able to say "If I have to stop this car and beat your ass, you're gonna be sorry you came on this trip!"
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

You'd be surprised at how many people wished New England was in Europe.

FIFY... because it's nice to visit but you really wouldn't want to live there.

It's good to have goals.
