Rule change regarding games shortened by rain
« on: July 29, 2007, 05:38:42 pm »
OK, I have no idea what the rule change was.  I thought the days of the 7 inning game like Philly had on Friday or the 5-inning game like the Mets had today were over.  Obviously, I was wrong.

So if not this, what changed?

What changed is when those games are tied when the rain comes. It used to be if the game is tied after 5 innings, it was a "tie" and the whole game was played over. Now, they pick up where they left off (witness the Friday conclusion of June 28th O's-Yanks game).

The Yanks/Os game was more than that even.

The Orioles led at the end of 7, but the Yankees took the lead amid the raindrops and were still batting in the top of the 8th when the tarp came out.  Under the old rules that game would have reverted back to the last complete inning giving Bal'mer the win.

Instead, the umps called things right after the hit putting the Yanx ahead [insert conspiracy theory here] and they resumed a month later from that spot.

And if ARod had hit a HR when the game resumed, it wouldn't have counted as his 500th but rather his 493rd, meaning his 499th would have become his 500th.
