Dugout fight @ Wrigley
« on: June 01, 2007, 03:02:24 pm »
So I'm watching the Braves and Cubs this afternoon, and Carlos Zambrano absolutely melts down after a 5 run 5th inning, which included a passed ball and a throwing error by Michael Barrett (the PB was a mix up on signs, Barrett expected a slider, it was a FB for a strike, Barrett completely missed it).

Zambrano punched and shoved Barrett in the dugout. Hilarious.

That was brilliant.   I really think it could be a good omen for the Astros seeing those two retards go at it.   Oh and Zambrano is washed up at 25 years old.  Nice work Cubbies.   ;)

Someone should have handed them each a bat.  No sense playing around.

Awesome! I just saw the replay on TBS. It wasn't just a swing-and-a-miss from Zambrano like I expected, it was a full-on slap-fight. Then Sweet Lou had to go up the tunnel to survey the wreckage.

My God, that's wonderful. Absolutely wonderful.

In a previous inning, Matt Murdon absolutely butchered a routine fly ball into a run scoring for the Braves.  Zambrano was said to be ready to self combust right there on the mound.  Guess who came out to calm him down?  Yes, Michael Barrett (along with the pitching coach).  I wonder if Barrett said anything to the effect of "calm down, pitch your game, you have to rise above these mistakes by others".

If so, the following inning must of made Zambrano mad enough to say to Barrett "I've got your rise above it right here in my right fist!"  Outstanding!

Oh, and I love the comedy of errors that led up to it. Barrett's throw to third missed not only the third baseman, but also the backup guy ... shortstop I guess. Epic.

They started jawing in the dugout, and it looked like the Vagina put his hands on Zambrano and pushed him a little. So Zambrano started throwing haymakers.

Careful.  It was a fight with Barrett that spurred the 2005 Astros into action.  I don't know if the same karma works incestuously, and I don't want to find out!

Barrett may be a giant, sand-filled vagina in need of pummeling on a regular basis, but 6 of the 7 runs Zambrano allowed were earned.  The meltdown inning was a combination of walks (2) and doubles (3) wrapped around Barrett's double-fuck.

Top 5th: Atlanta
- E. Renteria walked
- B. McCann singled to right, E. Renteria to second
- A. Jones lined out to third
- J. Francoeur doubled to deep center, E. Renteria and B. McCann scored
- S. Thorman walked
- P. Orr singled to left, J. Francoeur out at home, S. Thorman to second
- S. Thorman to third on passed ball, S. Thorman scored, P. Orr to second on M. Barrett's throwing error
- K. Davies doubled to deep right, P. Orr scored
- K. Johnson doubled to deep right, K. Davies scored
- W. Harris flied out to left

Nope.  It was in '05, when Barrett got fixated on Oswalt.

Oops:  Correction, it was 2004.  From Wikipedia:

Barrett faced a little controversy late in the 2004 season, after a confrontation with Houston pitcher Roy Oswalt. After giving up a three run homer to Aramis Ramirez, Oswalt hit Michael Barrett in the back with the next pitch; many people, including Barrett, considered the pitch to be an intentional bean ball. Five days later, when the Astros traveled to Chicago, Barrett began arguing with Oswalt, while Oswalt was at bat. Both teams' benches cleared, but no punches were thrown.

Bwahaha! The Cubs' website is awesome. Here are their recent news headlines:

3:30 p.m. - Barrett gains 'new perspective' (he got Wednesday off to "regroup mentally)
3:49 p.m. - Piniella: There's no need to throw a fit
4:25 p.m. - Tensions boil over in Cubs' dugout; Pitcher Zambrano, catcher Barrett have to be separated

After Barrett missed that strike for a PB, Zambrano was visibly pissed and started lobbing meatballs up there. Davies, the Braves pitcher, hit his double to the ivy in RF.

Damn, that was fun to watch.

Don't forget that Barrett was the tool who sucker-punched fellow 'hole Pierzinski.  Regardless, Zambrano is pure class.

8/22/2004
Wood (coming off a 5 day suspension for arguing with the umpire) hit Jason Lane's in the second  following Mike Lamb's solo homer
Wood hit Carlos Beltran on the foot in the third,

Oswalt's in the third  leadoff walk to Wood. Patterson's fielder's choice bunt, struck out Derrek Lee. Raul Chavez almost converted a double play with Patterson stealing, but Patterson dislodged the ball from Jeff Kent's glove to steal the base.

Todd Walker followed with a ground-rule double that bounced over the right-field wall, tying the score at 1. After Alou drew a walk, Sammy Sosa followed with a one-hopper toward third.

Lamb let the ball get past him for an error, letting the Cubs take a 2-1 lead. Ramirez followed with his homer over the wall in left-center field. Oswalt hit Barrett with the next pitch. (after the game Bagwell said. "I would have thrown Roy out. It was as blatant as it could be. That's it.")

Wood hit Jeff Kent in the fifth Hohn ejects Wood.

8/27
6th inning, Mercker hits Oswalt, no one ejected

8/28
Carlos Beltran left with a bruised knee after he was hit by a pitch by Remlinger in the eighth

Later in the inning, Berkman appeared to be hit in the helmet by Cubs reliever Mike Remlinger.

Dan Wheeler hit Derrek Lee in the back with a pitch in the ninth. Wheeler and Garner were ejected

HBP Final score Cubs 6, Astros 2

He did that.  I also believe that Oswalt was plunked in that game.  Barrett had a huge grin on his face.

Point is:  I believe all those runs were earned.  If Zambrano wasn't such a nonce, then maybe he pitches around the error.

Hey, it's Zambrano's birthday... happy birthday, Carlos!
Funny, punching Michael Barrett was actually on my b-day wish list, too.

I gotcha, and Soriano saved Zambrano one run by gunning down Franceour at the plate with a strong one hopper to Barrett just before the PB/E-2.

Barrett was lifted for "defensive reasons" half an inning later.  I'm sure it's all love and sweetness in that locker room right now.

i watched the whole thing.  no haymakers from zambrano, just him trying to grab barrett's face.  zambrano telling barrett to pull his head out of his ass, presumably about the passed ball and throwing error.  barrett acting like he's innocent.  zambrano starts to walk away, then barrett points to something.  zambrano turns around, barrett about to get in his face but zambrano slaps at him before he gets the chance.

nothing but 90-91 fastballs after the throwing error.  the first double probably should have been caught, but murton completely misplayed it.  the second double was a belt-high fastball.  loud boos afterward.

GOLD JERRY! GOLD!

Just to make this a perfect circle, if you go to the Seinfeld page on Wikipedia, and click on the "Gold Jerry!  Gold!" link under references, it takes you to the front page of the Chicago Sun-Times where they currently have a story about a fight in the Cubs' dugout involving Zambrano and Barrett!

There is so much involved in this story that a guy like Jay Mariotti will have a field day writing about this for months!

    • Carlos Zambrano is in his walk year and he could command Barry Zito money, instead he is melting down and unbeknowest to him, the money he was sure to make this offseason is flying off the radar as we speak.
    • Lou Pinella was brought in to avoid this sort of discord and rule the dugout with his iron fist.  Looks more like the dugout is ruling him as he's very lost on how to handle these guys.
    • Michael Barrett, lauded for his offensive skills as the poster child for the neo "catchers should hit, screw the defense" crowd is having a horrible season doing what he does best... hit a baseball.  But what is worse is that he is actually getting worse on defense and hurting his team that way as well.  It's so bad, they have to give him a mental health day to try and regroup.

like how Barrett pointed at the scoreboard and the 13 hits Big Z had given up after Z came in pointing fingers.

He did that.  I also believe that Oswalt was plunked in that game.  Barrett had a huge grin on his face.

So did Roy!  Or was it more of the shit-eating "get over yourself, Mikey" grin?

When he approached Barrett in the dugout, was Zambrano pointing at his head to indicate Barrett is retarded? Barrett is crazy?  Carlos is crazy?  Inquiring minds want to know.

My favorite part, aside from the obvious, was Brenly and the other clown/Cub announcer lamenting the fight from the booth.  Brenly sounded like someone had just run over his puppy.

Brownie reports that the slapfest continued in the clubhouse and Zambrano busted Barrett's vagina lip. Ended up in the hospital.

On your marks.  Get set.  Mariotti!!

"This was so predictable, of course, a bloody outgrowth of a dysfunctional team that was pieced together haphazardly and can't do the simplest things: run, catch, hit, pitch. Take a volatile pitcher whose contract talks ended when the team was sold and hasn't pitched well since. Add an airhead catcher who rubs folks the wrong way. Throw in a renowned manager who makes $4 million a year and screams a lot but can't fix basic fundamental lapses.

And what did you get Friday?

    Nuts on Clark."

yeah--a great hunsicker gem unearthed.  he pulled lamb that year too.

another Hun myth. no one thought Wheeler was any good. the trade was an accommodation worked out by the clubs so that Wheeler's wife could be near her dying mother.

My hope at the time, since Wheeler (and his wife) were already here, was that when the position in the booth came open year before last, they'd bring back Staats.

Of course, second fiddle to Milo might not have looked all that attractive to him.  If he had been offered it.

Maybe he should just keep his mask on when he's in the dugout. At least when Zambrano pitches. Barrett should look awesome if he's in the lineup today.

Piniella melt down in the 8th. Kickin dirt all over the third base umpire. Kicked his hat. Gets some more. Then kicks his hat 2 more times around the field.

Play was ball got away from the catcher, runner tries to advance but gets put out. Throw was there in plenty of time.

Bleachers throw all their trash on the field, Braves have to leave the field.

Froemming came over to stop him, Lou pushed him away. Some other big mother fucker (umpire) came over got in between Lou and the 3rd base ump.

Earlier, the pitcher had stretched a double and made the third out at third.

I think Lou will be happy to be away from the Cubs for a few days.

A boy is brought in to meet the judge presiding over his parent’s divorce.  Asked his preference on who he stays with the boy, without hesitation, says “The Cubs.”  The judge chuckles at the cute little boy and asks him to explain.  The boy breaks down in tears telling the judge in confidence that his mother beats him daily and when his father gets home from work, he proceeds to beat him mercifulness as well.  The judge is obviously outraged at this discovery and begins to consider the many options available and tries to explain to the boy that he’ll find him a good safe home.  But the boy is insistent that it MUST be the Cubbies if he’s going to be safe… they can’t beat anyone.
