Pinch Hitting Jason Jennings
« on: May 31, 2007, 10:08:01 pm »
The reward sure doesnt seem worth the risk, especially considering that he bats left-handed.    If Gar is that worried about burning a position player, wouldn't it make a bunch more sense to boot Moehler and bring up Munson or Bruntlett or someone else?
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Well that would have been pretty spur of the moment dont you think?

It was a complicated ruse to make us believe that Lane and Ensberg had been traded, before running them out later to make us believe that they had not been traded, to distract us from the possibility that Burke was being traded. An elegant sleight of hand.

I'm starting to buy into that thought that Moehler has incriminating photos of McLane.

some of you folks think way too much. Jennings is an excellent hitter, and he likely will PH more. many pitchers have done so in the past.

I'd rather have an extra position player, then having to pinch hit with my #2 starter, who also bats lefthanded.    I could see carrying the extra pitcher, if there was any value in it, but Moehler has pitched less this week, than our pitchers have had to pinch hit.

I'd rather use Lane for mop up time, then Jennings to PH.

But, considering the Astros do carry 12 pitchers, and have that many on their team tonight,, obviously Garner was saving position players for later.  I could be wrong.  I could discuss this further.  But, I'm due back on the planet Earth.

Well no shit.   I realize what he was doing tonight.   I just dont like the notion of putting yourself in the position to have to do that.

I think we're all missing the most important issue here.  Why did Garner snub Roy Oswalt for a pinch hitting opportunity.  He did it last year with Andy Pettitte who proportedly was upset at the snub.  So much so, JdJO decided he needed to go ask Sparky for his reaction to the.... ahum... controversy!  Now this!  I'm sure JdJO is slipping some text messages to Roy as soon as Jenning dug in: "R U Mad? Call me!"

Somehow, this will be the most important issue for the game report he'll file.  He'll slip in some backhanded compliment first, throw some deflection about he isn't really asking but he has to do it for the e-mailers, throw some bit about Garner in there and end with his expression of love for Oswalt: "Jason Jennings is a good guy... that is why it *hurts* me so much to have to do this and ask "why?"  why Jennings when Roy Oswalt was the man Scrap Iron chose last year!  Has he lost confidence in Roy?  I have e-mails of folks who are asking me to find out... I must find out.  Why does Phil hate Roy so much that he would snub him so!  Oswalt is a proven pinch hitting option and any team in the National League would trade for him just for that reason alone.  The fact that he's a great pitcher is gravy."

Or something close to that.

They had to use Woody a couple games ago.

Considering that Moehler does nothing for the team, I'd prefer to have the extra position player so Gar doesnt need use his #2 pitcher to pinch hit.

Garner prefers 12 pitchers.  It's reality.  You can either deal with it, or construct some fantasy team, as you seem to be doing.  The one that has Munson or Bruntlett suddenly to pinch hit.

I didnt get that either.  There was nothing specific that precipitated the meeting, and it went on for awhile.  I dont remember what Garner was doing though.

I don't mind it.   Jennings can hit better than Lane.   He has been such a good hitter as a pitcher that colorado toyed with the idea of giving him starts playing a position on his off days in the past.

Here's a section from the game recap on the Express site (http://www.roundrockexpress.com/default.asp?PageId=84&ArticleId=1225):

Quote from: RR Express recap
Round Rock’s lone run on the night came in the eighth after pinch hitter Mike Rodriguez drew a lead-off walk. Chris Burke followed with a walk, but was doubled off at second when Tim Raines, Jr. grounded into a double play. With Rodriguez at third, Brooks Conrad singled to left field and gave the club their first and only score.

That would seem to imply that Burke was still in the game in the 8th.

Where did the rumor about Burke being lifted in the 1st originate from?  I've forgotten.

I was listening to the game on the radio, but it was after Burke came out, and I never heard him mentioned. Still, I remember Jesse Garcia hit a homer batting in the leadoff spot in the 3rd or so, so that would mean that Burke either wasn't playing or was taken out(assuming Burke was leading off).
